Day 4: A Day of Serenity and Tradition in Shirakawa-go: Exploring Temples and Local Flavors
Discover Shirakawa-go's charm: serene temples, wooden walkways, and local cuisine create unforgettable family memories amidst autumn colors.
Whispers of the Past
Today in Shirakawa-go felt like stepping back in time, a gentle immersion into the heart of rural Japan. The crisp October air, tinged with the promise of autumn, set the stage for a day of exploration and reflection. Klaus, Ama, and I embraced the slower pace, eager to discover the cultural gems hidden within this UNESCO World Heritage site. It's amazing how a place can feel so untouched, despite the passage of time and the influx of visitors. Today was a perfect blend of historical discovery and culinary delights, a balance I always strive for when sharing these experiences with my family.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Arai. Located conveniently near the bus station, it was the perfect spot to fuel up for our adventures. The cozy atmosphere and the warmth of the staff made us feel instantly at home. I opted for the Hida beef set meal, a local specialty, while Klaus chose a tempura sushi. Ama enjoyed some rice and miso soup, her little face beaming with delight. The Hida beef was exquisite, tender and flavorful, enhanced by a sweet miso sauce that had me wanting more. Klaus enjoyed his tempura, remarking on the freshness of the ingredients. Arai definitely set a high bar for the culinary experiences to come.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off to explore Myozenji Temple. This temple, founded in 1748, stands as a significant religious site in Shirakawa-go, its main hall boasting a distinctive thatched roof. Passing through a rice paddy to get to the temple's main hall, known as Honden, was a beautiful and serene experience. The temple also functions as a museum, showcasing tools used by people in the past. Ama was fascinated by the old artifacts, her curious eyes taking in every detail. The three levels of the temple offered a glimpse into the past, a testament to the enduring traditions of this region. What struck me most was the sense of peace that permeated the air, a feeling of connection to the generations who had walked these same paths.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history whispers and traditions thrive.
Leaving Myozenji, we took a leisurely stroll along the Wooden Walkway. This path meanders through the village, offering breathtaking views of the gassho-style farmhouses. The autumn colors were just beginning to emerge, painting the landscape in hues of red, orange, and gold. The air was crisp and clean, invigorating our senses. Ama skipped ahead, her laughter echoing through the serene surroundings. The Wooden Walkway provided a perfect vantage point to appreciate the intricate details of the farmhouses, their steep thatched roofs resembling hands in prayer. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the ingenuity and resilience of the people who had built these structures to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region.

Lunchtime found us at Soba Dojo Restaurant, a charming soba noodle shop in the heart of Shirakawa-go. The warm ambiance and rustic decor welcomed us, creating an inviting atmosphere. Soba Dojo specializes in freshly made soba noodles, crafted from locally sourced buckwheat flour. I opted for the cold dipping noodles, served with a savory dipping sauce, while Klaus chose a hot noodle soup with seasonal vegetables. Ama happily slurped on a small bowl of plain soba, enjoying the simplicity of the dish. The soba was delicious, the noodles perfectly cooked and the dipping sauce bursting with flavor. It was a delightful culinary experience, made even better by the friendly staff who shared their knowledge about soba and local culture.

After lunch, we did a little shopping at Ichihi, a local shop offering a variety of souvenirs and local crafts. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan for my mother, while Klaus picked up a small wooden carving. Ama was thrilled with her purchase: a little toy shaped like a gassho-style farmhouse. It's moments like these, finding unique treasures, that truly enrich our travel experiences. I was happy to support the local artisans and take home a piece of Shirakawa-go's heritage.
