A Day of Cultural Contrasts

Today in Chiang Mai was a delightful blend of history and whimsy, a perfect concoction for a family adventure. We embarked on a journey that transported us from the ancient ruins of a lost city to the fantastical world of 3D art. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're exploring with loved ones, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Goodsouls Kitchen. Klaus was particularly excited, having read rave reviews about their pancakes. Ama, of course, was thrilled at the prospect of anything sweet first thing in the morning. I opted for the Khao Soi soup, eager to try a local favorite. It was a vibrant and flavorful start to our day, setting the perfect tone for exploration. The restaurant itself had a lovely, laid-back atmosphere, popular with tourists and digital nomads alike. It felt good to support a vegan establishment that clearly put so much love and care into their food. I even managed to grab a quick call with my mother in Ghana, sharing our food adventures and promising to try and recreate the Khao Soi when I get back home. She chuckled, reminding me of my less-than-stellar cooking attempts in the past, but I was determined to bring a taste of Thailand back to Potsdam.

Fueled and ready, we set off to explore Wiang Kum Kam, the ancient city that predates Chiang Mai. It's fascinating to think that this was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, built by King Mangrai before he moved his seat of power to Chiang Mai. The city's history is etched in the very soil beneath our feet, a silent testament to the rise and fall of empires. As we wandered through the ruins, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the past, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. The kids, surprisingly, were captivated by the crumbling walls and ancient structures. They peppered me with questions about the kings and queens who once walked these streets, their imaginations running wild with tales of battles and royal intrigue.

We decided to explore Wiang Kum Kam in a traditional horse-drawn carriage. Ama was particularly excited about this. Our guide shared stories of the city's past, explaining how it was eventually abandoned due to repeated flooding. It's hard to believe that this thriving capital was once lost to the ravages of nature, buried beneath layers of mud and silt. The most fascinating thing was learning about the excavation efforts that began in the 1980s, revealing the secrets of this ancient city to the modern world. We visited Wat Chedi Liam, which has been around since 1286. It was amazing to see something so old still standing.

To truly see the world, one must embrace both its history and its capacity for reinvention.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for something completely different: Art in Paradise Chiang Mai. This 3D art museum is a world of optical illusions and interactive exhibits, where visitors can become part of the artwork. It was an absolute blast, especially for Ama. We posed for countless photos, pretending to escape from dinosaurs, walk across precarious bridges, and fly through the air on magic carpets. It was the perfect opportunity to let our inner child run wild, and we laughed until our sides ached. Even Klaus, who usually prefers more serious pursuits, couldn't resist the playful atmosphere. I think he secretly enjoyed pretending to be a superhero, rescuing Ama from a giant snake.

The museum was divided into different zones, each with its own unique theme. We explored the underwater world, the wildlife zone, and even a surreal art zone. It was incredible to see how the artists had used perspective and shading to create such realistic illusions. Ama was particularly fascinated by the dinosaur zone, roaring and stomping her way through the exhibits. It was heartwarming to see her so engaged and excited, her face lit up with pure joy.

All that adventuring made us hungry, so we headed to The Swan Burmese Cuisine for lunch. It was a delightful change of pace, offering a taste of Myanmar right here in Chiang Mai. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We tried a variety of traditional Burmese dishes, from aromatic curries to fresh salads. I particularly enjoyed the Mohinga, a flavorful fish soup with rice noodles. It was the perfect comfort food after a busy day of exploring. Klaus was a big fan of the Tea Leaf Salad, which had a unique and tangy flavor. Ama, of course, was happy with anything that involved noodles.

Our final stop of the day was the Jing Jai Market, a vibrant community space where local farmers and artisans sell their wares. It was a Sunday, so the market was in full swing, bustling with activity. We wandered through the stalls, admiring the handmade crafts, sampling local delicacies, and soaking up the lively atmosphere. I was particularly drawn to the indigo-dyed cotton clothing, a beautiful example of traditional Thai craftsmanship. Klaus was interested in the organic produce, chatting with the farmers about their sustainable farming practices. Ama, predictably, was drawn to the sweet treats, begging us to buy her a colorful lollipop.

The Jing Jai Market is more than just a place to shop; it's a community hub where people come together to celebrate local culture and support sustainable practices. I loved the emphasis on organic produce and handmade crafts, a refreshing contrast to the mass-produced goods that dominate so many markets. It was also inspiring to see so many young entrepreneurs and artisans showcasing their talents, breathing new life into traditional crafts.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Redbox Restaurant for dinner. This Michelin-recommended restaurant promised a modern take on Thai cuisine, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance was elegant yet inviting, with Jim Thompson textiles adorning the tables. The service was impeccable, with the staff explaining the origins and preparation of each dish. We opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey through the flavors of Thailand. From the Malayu Satay to the butter prawns with salted egg yolk, every dish was a work of art, a symphony of flavors and textures that delighted the senses. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day, a celebration of Thai culture and cuisine.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Chiang Mai's iconic temples, including Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Umong Suan Putthatham. We're also hoping to experience some of the local nightlife, perhaps with a visit to Boy Blues Bar. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the laughter, the discoveries, and the shared moments that make family travel so special.

As I reflect on our adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing both the past and the present, of finding beauty in both ancient ruins and modern art. Chiang Mai has a way of weaving together these seemingly disparate elements, creating a tapestry of culture and experience that is both enriching and unforgettable. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
