A Day of Discovery in Marrakech

Today was all about immersing myself in the captivating history and culture of Marrakech, followed by an evening of delightful culinary experiences. It's amazing how much a single day can enrich your understanding of a place. I started with a hearty breakfast and ended with expertly crafted cocktails. The experiences in between were just as memorable.

My day began with breakfast at Le Trou Au Mur Restaurant and Roof terrace. What a delightful start! The restaurant's name, which translates to a hole in the wall, is quite fitting, as it feels like discovering a hidden gem. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with beautiful paintings adorning the walls. I savored traditional Moroccan flavors with a modern twist, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

First on my list was the Marrakech Museum, housed in the stunning Dar Mnebhi Palace. The palace itself is a masterpiece of Andalusian architecture, and I found myself equally captivated by the building's design as by the museum's collection. The central courtyard, with its cedar archways and vibrant tilework, was particularly breathtaking. The exhibits showcased a diverse array of Moroccan art, including ceramics, weapons, and textiles, offering a glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage. It's a great place to slow down and appreciate the artistic treasures of Marrakech.

The beauty of Marrakech lies not only in its grand monuments but also in the hidden stories whispered within its ancient walls.

Next, I ventured to the Dar El Bacha Museum, also known as the Museum of Confluences. This museum, once a palace, provided a fascinating look into Morocco's history and architecture. Built in 1910, it was once the home of Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech, and has hosted numerous prominent figures, including Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin. The museum houses a diverse collection of art objects and cultural artifacts, each room meticulously decorated to reflect the palace's rich history. I was particularly impressed by the interior courtyards and gardens, which offered a tranquil escape from the bustling city.

My historical journey continued at the Almoravid Koubba, one of the oldest monuments in Marrakech. This small, unassuming structure dates back to the 12th century and is a rare example of Almoravid architecture. Originally built as a place of ablution for worshippers at the nearby Ben Youssef Mosque, the Koubba features intricate geometric patterns and Arabic inscriptions. I was fascinated by the underground water system that once supplied water to the mosque, showcasing the advanced engineering skills of the Almoravids. It’s amazing to see how much history is packed into such a small space.

For lunch, I chose Chez Brahim Restaurant, known for its Moroccan and Berber cuisine. Located near Jamaa el Fnaa, it offered a welcome respite from the bustling square. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, and I enjoyed a delicious tagine while watching locals and tourists alike pass by. I opted for the beef tagine, and it was absolutely delicious. The service was friendly, and the prices were quite reasonable, making it a great spot for a casual meal.

As the day transitioned into evening, I made my way to Le Nid´cigogne for dinner. This restaurant offered a delightful French-Moroccan fusion menu, and I savored a flavorful tajine while enjoying the restaurant's charming atmosphere. I was able to snag a table with a view, and it was lovely to watch the storks nesting nearby as I enjoyed my meal. The tagine was savory, and the fresh coffee was the perfect end to the meal. It was a lovely spot with a great view.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out BAROMETRE COCKTAILS in Marrakech. This speakeasy-style bar was a hidden gem, tucked away in a basement in the Gueliz neighborhood. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, and the bartenders were true mixologists, crafting unique and inventive cocktails. I enjoyed a custom cocktail created just for me, and it was the perfect ending to a day filled with cultural exploration and culinary delights.

Reflecting on the day, I am reminded of how much Marrakech has to offer. From its ancient monuments to its vibrant nightlife, the city is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure – a tour of the Atlas Mountains and perhaps a camel ride – I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. I'm particularly excited about escaping the city and experiencing the natural beauty of Morocco. I've heard the views are incredible, and I'm eager to capture some stunning photos.

Before heading back to the Riad Mille et une Nuits, I took a moment to appreciate the city lights and the sounds of the Medina. It’s these moments of quiet reflection that make traveling so rewarding. I’m reminded of why I chose Marrakech for this solo journey – to immerse myself in its culture, to explore its history, and to connect with its people. And so far, it has exceeded all my expectations.

As I drift off to sleep, I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. The Atlas Mountains await, and I can't wait to share my experiences with you all. Goodnight from Marrakech!

I'm also excited about the possibility of attending the 49th FANAF General Assembly, which focuses on inclusive and sustainable insurance development in Africa. As someone passionate about sustainable living and technological innovation, I find the theme very interesting. Plus, it's always great to see events that promote economic and social development on the continent.

Klaus and Ama are probably asleep back in Potsdam, and I miss them dearly. I made sure to call them earlier today, and Ama was so excited to hear about the camels I might see tomorrow. I promised to bring her back a small souvenir, maybe a little camel figurine. It's moments like these that remind me how important it is to balance my personal and professional life. While I love exploring new places and immersing myself in different cultures, my family will always be my top priority. I am also thinking about how the designs and colors of Dar El Bacha are connected to patterns my mom used to weave when I was little. I think I will call her tomorrow.

Until tomorrow!
