A Day of Discovery in Wli Nature Reserve
Today was nothing short of spectacular! As I continue my solo journey through Ghana, reconnecting with my roots, I decided to embrace the natural wonders of Wli Nature Reserve. My itinerary included conquering Mt. Gemi and basking in the glory of Ote Falls. The day was filled with physical challenges, breathtaking views, and moments of quiet reflection. It was a day that reminded me of the strength and beauty of this land and its people.

My day started early with a hearty breakfast at ANTI BEE WAKYE SPECIAL. I knew I needed a filling meal to fuel my adventures, and what better way to start than with some authentic Ghanaian wakye? It was the perfect combination of flavors and energy to kickstart my day. With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off towards Mt. Gemi.

The drive to Amedzofe, the town at the foot of Mt. Gemi, was an experience in itself. The winding roads offered glimpses of lush valleys and distant villages, a stark contrast to the bustling city life I'm accustomed to in Potsdam. Arriving at the trailhead, I took a deep breath, laced up my hiking boots, and began my ascent.
The hike up Mt. Gemi was more challenging than I anticipated, but incredibly rewarding. The trails wound through verdant forests, the air crisp and invigorating. As I climbed, I was surrounded by the sounds of nature – birds chirping, insects buzzing, and the rustling of leaves underfoot. It was a welcome change from the constant hum of city life. There were moments when I had to stop and catch my breath, but each pause offered a new perspective, a different angle of the stunning landscape.
I remember when my grandfather used to tell me stories about the mountains in Ghana, how they were places of refuge and spiritual significance. As I hiked, I felt a deep connection to those stories, to my ancestors, and to the land itself. It was as if the mountain was whispering secrets of the past, urging me to keep climbing.
The hike took me longer than I expected, maybe an hour and a half to the summit. I was definitely feeling the burn in my legs, but the panoramic views from the top made it all worthwhile. From the summit, I could see the lush valleys, rolling hills, and even a glimpse of Lake Volta shimmering in the distance. It was a breathtaking sight, a testament to the raw beauty of Ghana. At the summit stands a striking stone cross, erected by German missionaries in the early 20th century. It served as a reminder of the region's history and the cultural exchange that has shaped the area.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
I spent some time at the summit, soaking in the views and reflecting on my journey. It was a moment of profound peace, a feeling of being completely present in the moment. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the landscape, but I knew that no picture could truly do it justice. It was something that had to be experienced firsthand.
After descending Mt. Gemi, my next stop was Ote Falls. I was eager to see this waterfall, which I had heard so much about. The falls are located about 2 kilometers from the town center, and the journey there was an adventure in itself.

To get to Ote Falls, I had to navigate a series of trails and a canopy walkway, which was a unique experience. The canopy walkway swayed gently as I walked across, offering a thrilling perspective of the forest below. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but I quickly got used to it, enjoying the sensation of being suspended among the trees.
As I approached the falls, I could hear the rushing water, a sound that grew louder with each step. Finally, I emerged into a clearing, and there it was – Ote Falls, cascading down from a height of about 80 meters. While it may not be as tall as Wli Falls, it had its own unique charm and majesty.
The water was cool and refreshing, and I couldn't resist taking a dip. I stood under the cascading water, letting it wash over me, feeling the power and energy of nature. It was a revitalizing experience, washing away the fatigue of the hike and leaving me feeling refreshed and renewed.
I learned from my guide that Ote Falls is also culturally significant to the local people. It is considered a sacred location, with local myths indicating that the falls are haunted by ancient ghosts. Rituals and ceremonies are still held there from time to time, a testament to the enduring power of tradition.
After spending a couple of hours at Ote Falls, it was time to head back. I made my way back to Wli, where I had a late lunch at The Neem Grill. I treated myself to some grilled chicken and vegetables, savoring the flavors of local cuisine. The Neem Grill was a welcome oasis, a place to relax and refuel after a long day of hiking and exploring.

As the sun began to set, I decided to check out TREE BAR GHANA for a relaxing evening. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with both locals and tourists enjoying drinks and grilled dishes. I ordered a local beer and sat back, listening to the music and soaking in the vibrant energy of the place.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of Wli Nature Reserve. It was a day of physical challenges, breathtaking views, and moments of quiet reflection. It was a day that reminded me of the strength and beauty of this land and its people.
Tomorrow, I plan to journey onward to the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum in Accra. I'm looking forward to more adventures and discoveries as I continue my exploration of Ghana.
