Solo Exploration of Wli Nature Reserve: Reconnecting with My Roots

A Day of Mischief and Marvels

Today was an absolute whirlwind of nature, culture, and delightful surprises. Leaving the serene environment of Wli, I ventured deeper into the Volta Region, eager to experience more of Ghana's hidden treasures. The day promised encounters with playful monkeys and a gravity-defying rock formation, and it certainly delivered!

My first stop was Maria's Restaurant for a hearty breakfast. I opted for some local fare – a flavorful omelet with kontomire (cocoyam leaves) and a side of fried plantains. It was the perfect fuel for the adventures ahead. After breakfast, I set off towards the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary And Cultural Village, anticipation bubbling inside me. I’ve always felt a special connection to animals, and the thought of interacting with Mona monkeys in their natural habitat filled me with excitement.

Arriving at Tafi Atome, the air was alive with the sounds of the forest. I paid a small fee at the visitor center, which I learned helps support the local community and their conservation efforts. A guide led me into the lush, green forest, explaining the history and significance of the sanctuary. For over two centuries, the monkeys here have been considered sacred, believed to be messengers of the gods. This reverence has protected them and their habitat, allowing their population to thrive.

It wasn't long before we spotted them – troops of Mona monkeys swinging through the trees, their playful chatter echoing through the forest. They were surprisingly unafraid, approaching us with curiosity. Our guide handed us bananas, and soon I had a furry little friend perched on my arm, delicately peeling and eating its treat. It was an incredible experience, feeling their tiny hands and watching their intelligent eyes. I couldn't help but think of Ama back in Potsdam, how much she would have loved this! I made a mental note to bring her here someday, to share this special connection with nature and her Ghanaian heritage.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest moments, like sharing a banana with a monkey in a sacred forest.

After spending a blissful morning with the monkeys, I headed to Ike’s Cafe and Grill for lunch. I opted for jollof rice with grilled chicken, a Ghanaian classic. The spicy, flavorful rice and tender chicken were exactly what I needed to recharge for the afternoon's adventure: Umbrella Rock.

The journey to Umbrella Rock took me through winding roads and picturesque landscapes. Located near Boti Falls in the Yilo Krobo District, it’s a popular spot for tourists. As I hiked towards the rock formation, the humidity was intense, but the anticipation kept me going. The path was well-trodden, and I could hear the distant rush of the falls.

And then, there it was – Umbrella Rock. It’s truly a sight to behold. A massive rock balanced precariously on a smaller base, creating a natural umbrella that could shelter about fifteen people. I marveled at the forces of nature that had created this gravity-defying wonder. How could such a large rock remain balanced on such a small pivot? It felt like a metaphor for life itself – finding balance amidst uncertainty.

I spent some time simply sitting beneath the rock, soaking in the tranquility and the stunning views. The surrounding landscape was lush and green, a testament to the beauty of the Eastern Region. It was the perfect spot for introspection, a moment to appreciate the wonders of nature and the journey that had brought me here. According to local stories, a hunter discovered the rock a while ago. He told everyone about it and took them to see the strange rock formation. Since then, it has become a well-known tourist destination in the Eastern Region.

Before heading back to Wli, I made a detour to Elle Lokko in Accra. I’d heard so much about this multi-brand concept store that showcases the best of African fashion, art, and design. As someone passionate about supporting African creatives, I couldn't resist a visit. The store was a vibrant explosion of color and creativity, featuring unique pieces from talented designers across the continent. I picked up a beautiful hand-woven scarf and a few skincare products made with natural Ghanaian ingredients. It was a perfect way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Ghana back home with me.

Finally, I ended my day at Christian Gardens Restaurant for dinner. I enjoyed a comforting bowl of fufu with groundnut soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I’d had. From the playful monkeys to the balancing rock, each moment had been a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world, especially in Ghana.

Tomorrow, I plan to hike Mt. Gemi and visit the Ote Falls. I hear the views from Mt. Gemi are breathtaking, and I am excited to see another waterfall. I am also looking forward to trying some local food at ANTI BEE WAKYE SPECIAL for breakfast, The Neem Grill for lunch and Mandela Special Rice for dinner. I might also check out TREE BAR GHANA in the evening for a relaxing drink. The adventure continues!
