Beneath the Surface and Above the Gorge

Today was a day of subterranean exploration and natural wonders. Aisha and I ventured into the heart of Italy to discover the mesmerizing Grotte di Frasassi and the stunning Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and the refreshing embrace of nature, a welcome change from the Renaissance architecture of Urbino.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Pizzeria Locanda Della Stazione Urbino. The aroma of freshly baked pizza and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventurous day. I opted for a simple yet satisfying margherita pizza, while Aisha enjoyed a plate of spaghetti alla carbonara. It was a delightful start, and we were eager to hit the road.

The drive to Grotte di Frasassi - Parcheggio e Biglietteria took us through rolling hills and picturesque countryside. As we approached the caves, the anticipation grew. I had read so much about these natural wonders, and I couldn't wait to witness them firsthand. Fortunately, finding parking at Grotte di Frasassi - Parcheggio e Biglietteria was straightforward, and we quickly secured our tickets. I was glad I had remembered to pack a light jacket, forewarned that the temperature inside the caves remains a constant 14 degrees Celsius – a stark contrast to the warm summer air outside.

The descent into the Grotte di Frasassi was like entering another world. Our guide led us through a series of immense caverns, each more breathtaking than the last. The sheer scale of the caves was astounding, with towering stalactites and stalagmites forming intricate and otherworldly formations. The Ancona Abyss, the largest cave, could easily house the Milan Cathedral! Aisha was particularly fascinated by the stalactites, shaped like miniature castles and frozen waterfalls. I found myself captivated by the geological history etched into the cave walls, a testament to millions of years of natural processes.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

The tour was both educational and awe-inspiring. The guide explained the formation of the caves and the various geological features, making the experience even more enriching. I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and respect for the power of nature. It was a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such ancient and magnificent formations. I made sure to take plenty of photos, hoping to capture the magic of the caves, though no picture could truly do them justice.

Emerging from the depths, we were greeted by the bright sunshine and the lush greenery of the Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi. After the cool, damp air of the caves, the warmth was incredibly welcome. We decided to explore some of the park's hiking trails, eager to stretch our legs and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. According to the park's website, there are about 35 official trails, so there's plenty to explore.

We chose a relatively easy trail, the Sentiero Frasassi, which wound through the forest and offered stunning views of the Gola della Rossa. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers. Aisha, with her nursing background, was particularly interested in the local flora, identifying various plants and explaining their medicinal properties. I enjoyed the opportunity to capture the landscape with my camera, trying to frame the perfect shot of the gorge and the surrounding hills.

As we hiked, we encountered other nature enthusiasts, families with children, and couples enjoying a leisurely stroll. There was a sense of camaraderie among us, a shared appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. We paused at a scenic overlook, taking in the panoramic views of the gorge. The sheer scale of the landscape was breathtaking, with the rugged cliffs and verdant forests stretching as far as the eye could see. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

After our hike, we were ready for a late lunch. We stopped at Camera A Sud in Urbino. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. Aisha ordered a plate of handmade pasta with truffle sauce, while I opted for a hearty ribollita, a traditional Tuscan bread and vegetable soup. The food was delicious, and we savored every bite, feeling grateful for the simple pleasures of good food and good company. It was a delightful culinary experience, and we left feeling refreshed and energized.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We stopped by Grifa, a local shop known for its unique clothing and accessories. Aisha found a beautiful silk scarf, while I picked up a stylish leather belt. It was a fun way to support local businesses and bring home a little piece of Urbino with us. I even found a lovely little dress for Funke, I am sure she will love it. According to their TikTok account, they always have new arrivals.

As the day drew to a close, we made a final stop at Bar Il Caffe' Degli Amici for a well-deserved aperitivo. We sat at a table outside, sipping on Aperol spritzes and enjoying the lively atmosphere of the bar. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the warm evening air and the convivial ambiance. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and adventure.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of this region. The Grotte di Frasassi were a true marvel, and the Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi offered a refreshing escape into nature. It was a day of contrasts, from the depths of the earth to the heights of the mountains, from the ancient formations of the caves to the vibrant life of the forests. As we head into tomorrow, I am very much looking forward to visiting the Castello di Gradara and Baia di Vallugola – I hear they are both amazing.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Castello di Gradara and Baia di Vallugola, further immersing ourselves in the history and beauty of this region. I'm particularly excited about visiting the castle, as I've always been fascinated by medieval history. Aisha is looking forward to spending some time by the sea, soaking up the sun and enjoying the coastal scenery. We'll start the day with breakfast at Amici Miei Ristorante Pizzeria, followed by lunch at Osteria al Tre. In the evening, we'll dine at Ristorante San Giovanni Urbino, savoring the local cuisine and reflecting on our experiences.

As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I feel a deep sense of contentment. Urbino has truly captured my heart, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings. Maybe I will get Aisha to get me something from Rosita's, I could use a new shirt. Until then, arrivederci!
