A Day of Roman History and Italian Flavors

Today, Aoife and I immersed ourselves in the rich history and vibrant culture of Aosta. From exploring ancient Roman ruins to savoring the exquisite local cuisine, every moment was a delightful journey through time and taste. It was a day of discovery, connection, and appreciation for the beautiful blend of past and present that this charming Italian town offers.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Albergo Gran Paradiso. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. I enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, while Aoife opted for a lighter meal of fresh fruit and yogurt. The hotel's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home, ready to embrace the adventures that awaited us in Aosta.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the historical heart of Aosta. Our first stop was the magnificent Arco di Augusto, a stunning Roman triumphal arch erected in 25 BC to honor Emperor Augustus. Standing beneath this ancient monument, I couldn't help but marvel at the incredible craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire. The arch, with its single vault and Corinthian capitals, served as a powerful reminder of Aosta's rich past.

Aoife and I spent some time wandering around the arch, taking in its intricate details and imagining what life must have been like in Augusta Praetoria, as Aosta was known in Roman times. The arch is a testament to Roman engineering and artistry, and it’s hard not to be impressed by its grandeur. We learned that the arch once held an inscription in bronze letters, and in the Middle Ages, it was even used as a home and a fortification. The wooden crucifix beneath the vault added a touch of reverence, a reminder of the arch's long and varied history.

Next, we ventured to the Criptoportico Forense, an underground structure that once served as a covered walkway and market area. Stepping inside, we were transported back in time. The cool, dimly lit corridors echoed with the whispers of ancient Romans, and I could almost picture the bustling activity that once filled this space. The Criptoportico's vaulted arches and impressive stonework were a testament to the ingenuity of Roman architects.

As we walked through the Criptoportico, Aoife, ever the librarian, was particularly fascinated by the history and purpose of the structure. She imagined the merchants and citizens who once gathered here, exchanging goods and ideas. I, on the other hand, was struck by the sheer scale and durability of the construction. It's incredible to think that this underground marvel has survived for over two thousand years, a silent witness to the rise and fall of empires.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in connecting with the history and culture that shapes them.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We drove to La Locanda dei Sognatori, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Aosta Valley cuisine. The drive itself was a treat, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As we arrived, the aroma of local herbs and spices wafted through the air, promising a culinary experience to remember.

La Locanda dei Sognatori did not disappoint. We started with a platter of local cured meats and cheeses, each bite bursting with flavor. For our main courses, I opted for the hearty beef stew, while Aoife chose the delicate mushroom risotto. The dishes were prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the flavors were simply divine. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and attentive service added to the overall experience, making it a truly memorable meal.

As a restaurateur myself, I always appreciate seeing how other chefs and establishments celebrate their local culinary traditions. La Locanda dei Sognatori was a perfect example of this, showcasing the best of what the Aosta Valley has to offer. Aoife and I lingered over our meal, savoring each bite and enjoying the stunning views from the restaurant's windows.

In the late afternoon, we decided to explore Aosta a bit more, strolling through its charming streets and soaking in the local atmosphere. We passed by quaint cafes, artisan shops, and historic buildings, each with its own unique story to tell. The town was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

We stumbled upon a local market, where vendors were selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. Aoife, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, purchased a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, while I picked up some local honey and spices to bring back to my restaurant in Dublin. It was a joy to interact with the local vendors, learning about their crafts and traditions.

As evening approached, we made our way to Gou, a trendy bar known for its creative cocktails and lively atmosphere. We ordered a couple of their signature drinks and settled in to enjoy the evening. The bar was buzzing with energy, filled with locals and tourists mingling and chatting. The bartender, Marco, was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, recommending some local gins and tonics that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Gou was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the drinks were expertly crafted. Aoife and I chatted about our favorite moments from the day, reminiscing about the ancient ruins, the delicious food, and the friendly people we had met along the way. It was a perfect way to end our day in Aosta.

For dinner, we chose LO SCIATORE Ristorante Bar, a restaurant recommended for its regional cuisine and cozy ambiance. I decided to try the risotto, while Aoife went for a traditional dish of polenta with braised beef. The meal was hearty and satisfying, the perfect way to end a day of exploration. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

From the grandeur of the Arco di Augusto to the hidden depths of the Criptoportico Forense, every corner of the town held a story waiting to be discovered. And the food, oh, the food! From the hearty breakfast to the exquisite dinner, every meal was a celebration of local flavors and culinary traditions.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll back to our accommodation, enjoying the cool evening air and the starlit sky. The town was quiet and peaceful, a stark contrast to the bustling activity of the day. We held hands as we walked, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share this incredible experience together.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit the Eremo di San Grato and Maison de Mosse, continuing our exploration of the Gran Paradiso National Park. We’re also looking forward to trying more local restaurants, including Ristorante La Genzianella for breakfast, Ristorante e Locanda Chalet del Lago for lunch, and La Maison du Gout Café for dinner. And of course, we hope to find some unique souvenirs at Le Marché aux Puces.

As I write this, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Today was a reminder of the simple joys of travel: exploring new places, savoring delicious food, and connecting with the people and cultures that make each destination unique. And most importantly, it was a reminder of the joy of sharing these experiences with the one I love.

Until tomorrow, ciao from Gran Paradiso National Park!
