Senja's Embrace: A Promising Start

After a long journey from Dublin, involving a flight to Tromsø and a ferry to Senja Island, I've finally arrived at this stunning destination. The air is crisp, carrying a hint of the sea, and the landscape is simply breathtaking. October in Senja promises a unique blend of vibrant colors and moody skies. I'm eager to explore what this island has to offer, and today's itinerary is packed with natural wonders. I am especially excited, as I've heard that Senja is right under the Northern Lights Oval, and that mid-September offers just as good a chance to see them as the middle of winter.

My first day on Senja Island was nothing short of spectacular. The weather was a mix of sunshine and dramatic clouds, perfect for photography, which, as many of you know, is one of my favorite ways to document my travels. After a hearty breakfast at Senja By Heart - Restaurant, where I enjoyed some traditional Norwegian cuisine , I set off to explore the island. The restaurant was indeed at the heart of Senja, offering a passionate tribute to the North Norwegian food culture.

Tungeneset: Where the Devil Grins

My first stop was Tungeneset, a viewpoint famous for its unique footbridge and stunning views of the Okshornan peaks, also known as the Devil's Teeth. The drive there was scenic, with fjords and mountains dominating the landscape. The autumn colors were in full swing, painting the hillsides in shades of red, orange, and gold. When I arrived at Tungeneset, the wind was strong, but the view was worth braving the elements. The footbridge, made of Siberian larch, led me over the rocks to a perfect vantage point.

The Okshornan peaks lived up to their name, jutting out of the sea like jagged teeth. The light was constantly changing, with the sun peeking through the clouds to illuminate the mountains in a golden glow. I spent a good hour taking photos and simply soaking in the scenery. I could see why this spot is a favorite among photographers; the possibilities seemed endless. I took advantage of the shallow pools as reflective surfaces, capturing the dramatic sky and the imposing mountains. Although the public toilets are closed during the winter months, the location is still wheelchair accessible, which I thought was very considerate.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.

Husfjellet: A Hike to Remember

Next on the agenda was a hike up Husfjellet, a mountain known for its panoramic views. The trailhead was located in Skaland, a small village with a charming atmosphere. Parking was easy to find, and I quickly geared up for the trek. The weather forecast predicted a chance of rain, so I made sure to wear my hiking boots and pack a waterproof jacket – a lesson learned from almost forgetting it!.

The hike started through a forest, the path well-trodden but muddy in places. As I ascended, the trees thinned out, and the views began to open up. The trail was moderately challenging, with a steady climb that got my heart pumping. According to the markings, the trail difficulty was medium, but I found it manageable. There was a boggy section with boardwalks to help hikers cross without getting their feet wet. However, recent rainfall had made the area particularly damp, and I couldn't avoid the mud entirely.

Reaching the summit of Husfjellet was an incredible experience. The 360-degree views were simply breathtaking. To the northeast, I could see Tungeneset and the Steinfjorden fjord. To the south lay the beautiful Bergsfjorden fjord. The wind was strong at the top, but the views made it worth it. I spent some time taking photos and enjoying the scenery before starting my descent.

Skaland Waterfall: A Serene Finale

My final stop for the day was Skaland waterfall, a short drive from the village. The waterfall is easily accessible, located close to the main road. After parking my car, I took a short walk to reach the falls. The sound of the water grew louder as I approached, creating a sense of anticipation.

Skaland waterfall was a peaceful oasis. The water cascaded down the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery. The autumn colors added to the scene's beauty, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. I spent some time simply enjoying the moment, listening to the soothing sound of the water. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Senja Island.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped by Joker Skaland to pick up a few essentials. It's always good to support local businesses and stock up on snacks for the days ahead.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Hamn i Senja, Senja Reiseliv. The restaurant is known for its delicious dishes and stunning views of the harbor and surrounding mountains. As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures and looked forward to what tomorrow would bring. I am hoping the Northern Lights will show up too !

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ånderdalen National Park, Kaperdalen Museum, and Hamn Lighthouse. I'm also hoping to check out Hugos Pub / Senja Uteliv AS for a taste of the local nightlife. I am really looking forward to sharing these experiences with you all, and I hope you'll join me as I continue to explore the natural wonders of Senja Island.

I am so glad that I remembered to pack layers for this trip, as the temperature can change rapidly. Senja in October is definitely an experience, and I can't wait to see what else this beautiful island has in store.

Until tomorrow!
