Chasing Views and Flavors in Senja

Today was a day of conquering heights and indulging in the local flavors of Senja. It was a day that reminded me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace, to soak in the beauty of nature, and to savor every moment without compromise. From the challenging Hesten hike to the delightful meals, Senja continued to surprise and enchant me.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hamn i Senja, Senja Reiseliv. I must say, the accommodations here are quite charming, and the staff is incredibly welcoming. The breakfast spread was a delightful mix of Scandinavian delicacies, setting the perfect tone for a day of adventure. Fuelled up, I set off towards Fjordgård, the starting point for the Hesten hike.

The Hesten trail head was easy enough to find. There's something exhilarating about starting a hike, especially when you know the views are going to be spectacular. The crisp air and the promise of panoramic vistas made every step worthwhile. The trail itself was moderately challenging, with some slippery parts and rocks requiring proper hiking shoes. I took my time, enjoying the solitude and the stunning scenery around me.

As I ascended, the views of Segla became increasingly breathtaking. The iconic mountain, with its distinctive shape, dominated the landscape, and I couldn't resist stopping every few minutes to capture its beauty with my camera. I even ran into a few fellow hikers along the way, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. It's amazing how a shared love for nature can create instant connections between people.

Reaching the summit of Hesten was an accomplishment. The panoramic views were simply awe-inspiring, stretching across the fjords, mountains, and the vast expanse of the Norwegian Sea. I spent a good hour at the top, soaking in the scenery and feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. I even took a moment to video call Aoife and Róisín back in Dublin, sharing the stunning views with them. They were both in awe, promising to add Senja to their travel bucket list.

After descending from Hesten, I made my way to Bergsbotn utsiktsplattform. This viewpoint offered a completely different perspective of Senja's landscape. The 44-meter long platform extended out, providing unobstructed views of the Bergsfjord and the surrounding mountains. It was a perfect spot for some quiet reflection, and I spent some time simply enjoying the serenity of the surroundings.

Next on the agenda was the Devil's Jaw. This dramatic mountain range, also known as Oksen, is a series of jagged peaks that jut out into the sea. The views here were raw and untamed, a stark contrast to the more gentle landscapes I had seen earlier in the day. The sheer scale of the mountains was humbling, reminding me of the power and majesty of nature.

By this point, my stomach was beginning to rumble, so I headed to The Fat Cod for a late lunch. This restaurant in Skaland is known for its fresh seafood and stunning fjord views. I ordered the grilled cod, and it was cooked to perfection, the flavors enhanced by the fresh, local ingredients. The view from the restaurant was equally delightful, overlooking the Steinfjorden and adding to the overall dining experience.

With my batteries recharged, I decided to make a quick stop at Joker Husøy. I needed to pick up a few essentials, including a local map, which I realized I had forgotten to pack. This charming grocery store had a surprisingly good selection of local products, including smoked spiced salmon, which I couldn't resist buying.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Skagi Senja hotel & lodge - Flo bord og bar. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the food was a delicious blend of local and international flavors. I opted for the reindeer stew, a hearty and flavorful dish that was perfect for a chilly autumn evening. It was the perfect way to end a day of hiking and exploration.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Senja. The island has a unique charm, a blend of rugged landscapes and warm hospitality that has captured my heart. From the challenging hikes to the delicious meals, every moment has been a reminder of the simple joys of travel.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of what Senja has to offer. The itinerary includes a visit to Senja Husky Adventure AS, Ånderdalen National Park, and Night Lights - Northern Lights and Night Sky Experiences. I'm particularly looking forward to the husky adventure, as I've always been a dog lover. And of course, the Northern Lights experience is something I've been dreaming about since I started planning this trip.

Before I turn in for the night, I want to share a quick story from my time in Dublin. A few years ago, Aoife and I were wandering through a local market when we stumbled upon a small stall selling Malaysian spices. The aroma transported me back to my childhood in Kluang, and I spent a good hour chatting with the vendor about the different spices and their uses. It was a reminder of the importance of connecting with one's roots, even when far from home.

As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with anticipation for the adventures that tomorrow will bring. Senja has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what else this magical island has in store.
