Day 2: A Day of Discovery: Unearthing Perugia's Ancient Secrets
Join my family as we explore Perugia's historical treasures, from the majestic cathedral to the depths of an Etruscan well.
Echoes of the Past
Today was all about diving headfirst into the heart of Perugia's history. From the awe-inspiring architecture of the Cattedrale San Lorenzo to the depths of the Etruscan Well, every moment felt like stepping back in time. Lena, Omar, and I were eager to soak in the culture and stories that this ancient city had to offer.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Al Tartufo. As a Jordanian who now lives in Hamburg, I've come to appreciate the simple pleasures of a good meal, especially when shared with family. Lena ordered her usual cappuccino, while Omar was excited about his pastry. I opted for a strong espresso, ready to embrace the day's adventures. The restaurant was conveniently located near the cathedral, making it an ideal starting point for our exploration.

Cattedrale San Lorenzo: A Spiritual Anchor
The Cattedrale San Lorenzo, or Perugia Cathedral, was our first stop. Standing in Piazza IV Novembre, the cathedral's presence is imposing, a testament to centuries of devotion and artistry. The exterior, with its pink and white marble, immediately caught my eye, reminding me of the intricate designs I've seen in mosques back home. Although the façade remains unfinished, it only adds to the cathedral's unique character.
Inside, the high vaulted ceilings and Gothic columns created a sense of grandeur. Lena was particularly drawn to the chapel of the Holy Ring, where, according to tradition, the wedding ring of the Virgin Mary is kept. Omar, ever curious, was fascinated by the statues and the play of light through the stained glass windows.
We learned about the cathedral's history, from its origins in the 10th century to its current form, which began construction in the 14th century. It's incredible to think of all the historical figures who have walked these same floors. The Pietra della Giustizia, bearing a 1234 inscription about the repayment of public debt, was a tangible link to Perugia's past.
Visiting this iconic church is like walking through a living chronicle of Perugia's past and present.
Leaving the cathedral, we took a moment to admire the Fontana Maggiore, a stunning medieval fountain that stands proudly in the piazza. The intricate carvings and the sound of flowing water added to the vibrant atmosphere of the square.
National Gallery: A Treasure Trove of Art
Next on our itinerary was the National Gallery of Umbria, housed in the Palazzo dei Priori. As someone who appreciates art, I was eager to see the collection, which spans from the 13th to the 19th century. Lena, with her background in graphic design, was especially excited.

Explore the rich tapestry of Umbrian art at the National Gallery, a cultural gem in the heart of Perugia, showcasing masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
The gallery is home to over 3,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. We spent hours wandering through the various rooms, admiring masterpieces by artists such as Duccio di Buoninsegna, Gentile da Fabriano, and Piero della Francesca. The polyptych of St. Anthony by Piero della Francesca was particularly striking, a testament to the artist's skill and vision.
Omar, surprisingly, was quite engaged, especially with the digital displays and video presentations that brought the art to life. He was fascinated by the stories behind the paintings and the artists who created them. It was a joy to see him connecting with art in such a meaningful way.
The National Gallery not only showcases Umbrian art but also provides a broader view of Italian art history. It was fascinating to see how artistic styles and techniques evolved over the centuries. The gallery also houses a restoration workshop and a specialized library, highlighting its commitment to preserving and promoting art.
Etruscan Well: A Journey into the Depths
Our final attraction for the day was the Etruscan Well, also known as Pozzo Sorbello. This ancient well, located beneath Palazzo Sorbello, is a remarkable feat of engineering, dating back to the 3rd century BC. As we descended into the depths, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder.

The well is 37 meters deep, with a capacity of 424 cubic meters. It was built to ensure a reliable water supply for the city, and it's incredible to think that it's still in use today. The construction materials, typical of Etruscan architecture, added to the well's historical significance.
Omar was particularly excited about this part of the day. The idea of exploring an underground well captured his imagination, and he peppered us with questions about the Etruscans and their way of life. It was a great opportunity to teach him about ancient civilizations and their contributions to society.
The Etruscan Well is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Etruscans. It's a reminder of the importance of water and the ways in which civilizations have sought to secure this essential resource. The well also highlights Perugia's layered history, with each era building upon the foundations of the past.
Culinary Delights and Evening Relaxation
After our exploration of the Etruscan Well, we were ready for a late lunch. We headed to Locanda Del Bartoccio, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine. The menu offered a variety of dishes, from bruschetta to pasta to grilled meats. Lena and I shared a pasta dish with truffles, while Omar enjoyed a simple but delicious plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce.
