A Day of Discovery

Today, Perugia revealed layers of its past that left me in awe. From exploring ancient Etruscan tombs to wandering along a medieval aqueduct, each step was a journey through time. Lena, Omar and I discovered hidden gems that painted a vivid picture of this city's rich heritage. It was a day of contrasts, blending historical intrigue with the simple joys of family travel.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Bottega di Perugia. This charming spot, recommended by several locals, was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I opted for a simple yet satisfying *panino con porchetta*, while Lena enjoyed a vegetarian option with fresh mozzarella and grilled vegetables. Omar, of course, couldn't resist a *panino* filled with *Nutella*. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a delightful start to our morning.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to our first destination: the Ipogeo dei Volumni e Necropoli del Palazzone. This Etruscan tomb complex, located just outside the city center, offered a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world. As we descended into the underground chambers, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the people who lived and were buried here centuries ago.

The Ipogeo dei Volumni, the main tomb, was particularly impressive. Carved entirely out of the rock, it featured intricate details and remarkably well-preserved decorations. Lena was captivated by the funerary urns, each telling a story of a noble family from Perugia's past. Omar, surprisingly, was also intrigued, asking questions about the people who were buried there and what their lives were like. It was a great opportunity to teach him about history in a tangible and engaging way.

History is not just about dates and names; it's about understanding the lives and experiences of those who came before us.

After exploring the Etruscan tombs, we made our way back towards the city center to visit the Scalinata dell'Acquedotto. This impressive staircase, built along the path of a medieval aqueduct, offered a unique perspective of Perugia. As we climbed the steps, we were surrounded by the city's charming architecture, with colorful buildings clinging to the hillside.

The aqueduct itself was a marvel of engineering. Built in the 13th century to bring water to the Fontana Maggiore, it stands as a testament to the ingenuity of medieval builders. Lena, with her keen eye for design, appreciated the way the aqueduct blended seamlessly with the surrounding urban landscape. Omar, ever the curious one, was fascinated by the idea of water flowing through the aqueduct centuries ago.

As we reached the top of the Scalinata dell'Acquedotto, we were rewarded with stunning views of Perugia and the surrounding Umbrian countryside. The rolling hills, dotted with olive groves and vineyards, stretched out before us in a panorama of natural beauty. It was the perfect spot to take a break and soak in the atmosphere of this enchanting city.

Next on our itinerary was the Belvedere alla Via delle Rupe. Following directions, we wandered through a maze of narrow streets and alleyways, each turn revealing a new and captivating vista. The anticipation grew with every step, and finally, we arrived at the belvedere.

The view from here was simply breathtaking. From our vantage point, we could see the entire city of Perugia spread out before us, with its terracotta rooftops, ancient towers, and bustling piazzas. In the distance, the rolling hills of Umbria faded into the horizon, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice.

Lena and I stood there in silence, simply taking in the view. Omar, meanwhile, was busy exploring the area, climbing on the ancient walls and pretending to be a knight defending the city. It was a perfect family moment, one that I knew we would cherish for years to come.

After our fill of panoramic views, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. We stopped by Flying Tiger Copenhagen, a quirky Danish store known for its affordable and whimsical products. Omar was in heaven, browsing through the colorful toys and gadgets. Lena, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, found a few charming items to take back home to Hamburg. I ended up buying a small notebook and pen, inspired to jot down my travel reflections.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Ristorante Gradale for dinner. This restaurant, located just outside the city center, came highly recommended for its traditional Umbrian cuisine and stunning views. We were not disappointed.

The restaurant itself was beautiful, with a cozy dining room and a charming outdoor terrace. We opted to sit outside, where we could enjoy the cool evening air and the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, all made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. I started with a plate of *strangozzi al tartufo nero*, a traditional Umbrian pasta dish with black truffles. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the truffles were incredibly fragrant. Lena ordered the *gnocchi al ragu d'anatra*, homemade gnocchi with duck ragu. She raved about the rich, savory flavor of the sauce.

For our main courses, I chose the *cinghiale in umido*, wild boar stewed in a rich tomato sauce. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was simply divine. Lena opted for the *agnello alla scottadito*, grilled lamb chops with herbs. The lamb was perfectly cooked, and the herbs added a fragrant touch. Omar, meanwhile, enjoyed a simple but delicious plate of *pasta al pomodoro*. To accompany our meal, we ordered a bottle of local red wine, which was the perfect complement to the hearty Umbrian cuisine.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures. From exploring ancient tombs to wandering along a medieval aqueduct, each experience had been unique and memorable. We had discovered hidden gems, enjoyed stunning views, and indulged in delicious local cuisine. It was a day that had truly captured the essence of Perugia.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Perugia, a botanical garden showcasing a variety of plant species. We'll also explore the Pozzo Rinascimentale, a Renaissance-era well, and Palazzo Donini, known for its architectural beauty. And in the evening, we might unwind at Vinoteca Perugia, a local wine bar.

As I sit here now, writing in my notebook, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful city with my family. Perugia has captured my heart, and I know that I will never forget the echoes of the past that I have heard here.

The SIICA National Congress is also taking place in Perugia, highlighting the city's role in hosting significant events. It's fascinating to see how a city steeped in history also embraces modern intellectual gatherings.

Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but recall a Jordanian proverb my grandfather often shared: A journey is like a book; those who do not travel read only one page. Today, we turned several pages in Perugia's captivating story, and I eagerly anticipate what tomorrow's chapter will reveal.

Goodnight from Perugia.
