Whispers of the Past

Today marked the beginning of our Kyoto adventure, and what a start it was! From the moment we stepped off the train, I felt an immediate connection to this city, a blend of ancient traditions and modern life that's both captivating and comforting. Daniel and I were eager to dive right in, and Kyoto certainly didn't disappoint.

Our first stop was the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside. As we approached, the sheer scale of it all was breathtaking. The crisp February air carried the scent of incense, and the atmosphere buzzed with a mix of reverence and excitement. I was so glad I'd packed my comfortable walking shoes; we were in for a climb!

The path was lined with countless torii gates, each donated by individuals and businesses seeking blessings for prosperity and success. Walking through them felt like stepping into another world, a tunnel of vermillion stretching endlessly into the wooded hills. Sunlight filtered through the gates, casting an ethereal glow on the path ahead. Daniel, ever the data scientist, was fascinated by the inscriptions on each gate, noting the names and dates with keen interest. I, on the other hand, was completely absorbed by the visual spectacle, snapping photos at every turn.

We learned that Fushimi Inari has a history stretching back to the 8th century, initially established to pray for bountiful harvests. Over time, its focus expanded to include business prosperity and general well-being. Foxes, considered messengers of the deity Inari, were a recurring motif throughout the shrine. Statues of foxes holding keys, scrolls, and other symbolic items stood guard at various points along the path.

The journey through the torii gates was more than just a walk; it was a spiritual passage, a connection to centuries of devotion and hope.

As we climbed higher, the crowds thinned out, and the atmosphere became more serene. We passed small shrines and resting spots, each offering a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. The higher we climbed, the more panoramic the views became, with the city of Kyoto sprawling out beneath us. I tried to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago when pilgrims would make this journey on foot, seeking blessings for their families and livelihoods. It made me feel incredibly grateful for the life I have, and the opportunity to experience such a special place with Daniel.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed towards Kyoto for a delightful breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of small, flavorful dishes. Daniel, being a bit more adventurous, tried the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, sampling a variety of local vegetable dishes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the rest of our day.

With renewed energy, we made our way to Kiyomizu-dera, another of Kyoto's iconic temples. Perched on a hillside overlooking the city, Kiyomizu-dera is famous for its wooden stage that juts out dramatically from the main hall. As we approached the temple, the vibrant colors and intricate details of the architecture were truly impressive. It was easy to see why this place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temple was founded in 778, long before Kyoto became the capital of Japan. The main hall, rebuilt in 1633, houses a statue of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The wooden stage, constructed without the use of nails, offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding hills. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me.

Beneath the main hall is the Otowa Waterfall, where three streams of water cascade into a pond. Visitors can drink from the streams, each said to have different wish-granting powers. Daniel and I joined the queue, carefully choosing which stream to drink from. I opted for the one said to bring success in studies, while Daniel went for the one promising a long life. Who knows if they actually work, but it was a fun and memorable experience.

After Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled through the charming streets of Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. The street was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists browsing the many shops and stalls. From traditional crafts to trendy souvenirs, there was something for everyone. I picked up a few small gifts for family and friends back home, while Daniel found a unique piece of art for his office.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a delicious lunch at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, known for its mouthwatering tonkatsu. The restaurant was located in the Kyoto Porta, making it a convenient stop after our shopping spree. I ordered the pork tenderloin with prawn cutlet set, while Daniel opted for the Katsukura Tonkatsu set. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the dipping sauce was the perfect complement. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring.

For dinner, we had reservations at Gion Nanba, a Kaiseki restaurant in the Gion district. Finding the restaurant was an adventure in itself, tucked away in a small alley. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with only a few tables and a small counter. We opted for the counter seating, eager to watch the chefs at work.

Kaiseki cuisine is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients and the chef's culinary skills. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From delicate sashimi to savory grilled fish, every bite was a delight. The chefs took great care to explain each dish, highlighting the ingredients and preparation methods. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience.

The service was impeccable, the staff warm and attentive, making us feel incredibly welcome. The chef spoke excellent English, explaining each dish with passion and enthusiasm. It was clear that he took great pride in his craft, and his dedication to quality was evident in every bite. Daniel and I savored each course, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into creating such a memorable meal.

As we walked back to M’s Hotel Sanjo Wakoku, our stomachs full and our hearts content, I couldn't help but smile. Kyoto had already exceeded my expectations. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which will include exploring the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, the enchanting Tenryu-ji Temple, and the playful Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. I also plan to visit L'Escamoteur, a bar, for some drinks.

Tonight, as I reflect on our first day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. Kyoto is a city that truly nourishes the soul, and I can't wait to see what other treasures it holds.

I'm also reminded of the importance of being prepared for unexpected weather. Although February in Kyoto is generally dry, it can also be quite cold, especially in the evenings. I wish I had packed my raincoat, as there was a slight drizzle this evening. And while I remembered my camera, I realized I forgot to bring extra memory cards. Lesson learned!

Tomorrow, we'll venture into the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and explore the serene Tenryu-ji Temple. I can't wait to share those experiences with you all. Until then, oyasumi nasai (good night) from Kyoto!
