Exploring Reykjavik: A Family Adventure in Iceland
Day 6: Sailing Through History and Finding Serenity in Reykjavik's Heart
Exploring Reykjavik's maritime past at the Maritime Museum and unwinding in Laugardalur Park—a day of culture and calm with family.
Anchors Aweigh and Parks to Please
Today was a day of contrasts, diving deep into Iceland's seafaring history and then surfacing into the tranquil embrace of one of Reykjavik's greenest spaces. It was a Sunday well spent, balancing cultural enrichment with the simple joys of family time.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffivagninn, a charming spot right by the harbor. Daniel and I both opted for the breakfast plate, a delightful mix of scrambled eggs, bacon, blueberry skyr, melon, toast, and a pancake roll. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Kaffivagninn started as a harborside food truck in 1935, and you can taste the history in every bite. It felt special to start our day at the oldest restaurant in Reykjavik, knowing we were experiencing a place that has nourished generations of Icelanders.
With our bellies full, we set off for the Reykjavik Maritime Museum. Situated in a former fish-freezing plant, the museum was a treasure trove of information about Iceland’s relationship with the sea. From well-crafted ship models to exhibits detailing the lives of Icelandic fishermen, I was captivated by the stories of resilience and innovation. Daniel, ever the history buff, was particularly fascinated by the exhibits on the Cod Wars. I learned so much about how fishing has been the mainstay of the Icelandic economy for centuries. The museum did a fantastic job of bringing the past to life, making me appreciate the fish on my plate even more.

One of the highlights was the tour of the Óðinn, a former coast guard vessel. Stepping aboard, I could almost hear the echoes of sailors and feel the waves beneath my feet. It was a tangible connection to the past, a reminder of the courage and determination of those who braved the North Atlantic. I even tried on one of the old raincoats and took a photo, feeling like a real Icelandic seafarer!
To know the sea is to know Iceland.
After immersing ourselves in maritime history, we were ready for a change of scenery. We headed to Laugardalur, a sprawling park that felt like an oasis in the city. The weather was mild, with a touch of wind, but the sun peeked through the clouds just enough to make it a perfect day for a stroll. It was lovely to be surrounded by so much greenery, a welcome contrast to the urban landscape.

Laugardalur is more than just a park; it’s a hub of activity. We saw families picnicking, children playing, and couples enjoying leisurely walks. The Laugardalslaug, Reykjavik's largest outdoor thermal pool, looked incredibly inviting, but we decided to save that for another day. Instead, we explored the botanical garden, admiring the impressive collection of Arctic flowers and plants. It was fascinating to see the variety of flora that thrives in this unique environment.
We also visited the Reykjavik Family Park and Zoo, where we saw Icelandic animals, both wild and domesticated. The reindeer were particularly charming, and it was heartwarming to see the local children enjoying the play equipment. Laugardalur truly has something for everyone, and it was easy to see why it’s such a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.
As the day wound down, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Höfnin Restaurant. Located by the harbor, it offered stunning views of the water and a cozy atmosphere. We started with the langoustine soup, a creamy and flavorful concoction that warmed us from the inside out. For our main courses, Daniel chose the Icelandic cod, while I opted for the roasted lamb. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that Iceland is known for.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made a pit stop at Session Craft Bar. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for unwinding after a long day. Daniel enjoyed a local craft beer while I savored a glass of wine. The bar had a great selection of board games, which added a playful touch to the evening. It was a relaxing end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I settle into bed, I'm grateful for another day of unforgettable experiences. Reykjavik has captured my heart, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. It's amazing how a city can blend the old and the new, the cultural and the natural, to create such a unique and captivating experience. I am also happy that I managed to not forget any essentials today!
Tomorrow, we plan to delve into more of Reykjavik's modern marvels, starting with Perlan. Afterwards, we're scheduled for FlyOver Iceland, a simulated flight experience that promises to be both thrilling and educational. I can't wait to see Iceland from a bird's-eye view!
I am also looking forward to trying out Café Babalú for breakfast. I've read that it is known for its quirky decor and delicious pastries. For lunch, we're planning to visit Seabaron, famous for its lobster soup. And for dinner, we're venturing to Punk Restaurant, which I've heard offers a creative and edgy take on Icelandic cuisine. Finally, we may visit Thorvaldsens Bazar, a charming shop known for its traditional Icelandic crafts.
It's comforting to know that even in a new place, we can find familiar joys – a delicious meal, a cozy bar, a beautiful park. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the moments that connect us to the world and to each other. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with anticipation for another day of discovery in this enchanting city.

I'm also grateful for Daniel's companionship on this journey. His enthusiasm for history and his willingness to try new things make every day an adventure. It's not always easy traveling with family, but these are the moments that create lasting memories. He did mention that he would like to buy some warmer gloves for the trip tomorrow, so we will see if we can find some at Thorvaldsens Bazar.
I am also excited that the Scandinavian Association for the Study of Pain Congress, is set to take place in Reykjavík, Iceland. I hope someone will find a solution for my occasional headaches.
It is supposed to be partly cloudy tomorrow, with the temperature reaching 52°F. I will make sure to bring an extra layer of clothing.
Until tomorrow, bless!
