As Daniel and I settled into our first day on the Con Dao Islands, the blend of historical intrigue and serene beauty was immediately captivating. Having journeyed from the UK, leaving behind the familiar comforts of Bristol, we were eager to immerse ourselves in this unique Vietnamese paradise. Our adventure began with a deep dive into the island's history, followed by a culinary exploration that promised to tantalize our taste buds.

The December air was pleasantly mild, with temperatures hovering around 26°C, making it ideal for exploring. The humidity was manageable, a welcome change from the often-damp climate of the UK. As we stepped off the plane, the tranquility of Con Dao was palpable, a stark contrast to the bustling cityscapes we were accustomed to. We decided to embrace the local way of getting around and rented a scooter, a decision that immediately added a sense of freedom to our exploration.

Our first stop was the Bảo Tàng Côn Đảo, or the Con Dao Museum. The museum is located in the center of Con Dao, south of Nguyen Hue street and about 50 meters from the sea.

The Secret Restaurant proved to be a delightful culinary experience. The fusion of Mediterranean flavors with local ingredients was both innovative and satisfying. I opted for a seafood dish, eager to sample the fresh catch of the day, while Daniel, ever the adventurous foodie, chose a traditional Vietnamese specialty. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its elegant décor and tranquil setting, added to the overall enjoyment of our meal.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we found ourselves at the Wine & Coffee Bar Côn Đảo House. This cozy establishment offered the perfect respite after a day of exploration. Sipping on Vietnamese coffee, we reflected on the day's experiences, sharing our thoughts and impressions of Con Dao's rich history and captivating beauty. The Côn Đảo House has comfortable rooms, is kept very tidy and is located in a quite part of town. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

Dinner was at the Beach House Restaurant & Cocktails Côn Đảo, a restaurant recommended for its homemade pasta and healthy vegan dishes. Though not directly on the beach, the restaurant's cozy and intimate setting made it an appealing choice. The Beach House Restaurant & Cocktails Côn Đảo proved to be a culinary highlight. The menu featured a variety of international dishes, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. I savored a dish of homemade pasta, while Daniel indulged in a vegan naan sandwich. The friendly service and peaceful atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience.

As we strolled back to our accommodation, the night air was filled with the sounds of the island, a symphony of crickets, gentle waves, and distant chatter. Con Dao, even in its quiet moments, felt alive and vibrant. The fact that December is considered one of the driest months in Con Dao was certainly a plus, with only occasional short rain showers.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Hòn Tre Lớn and Bãi Nhát, eager to uncover more of Con Dao's natural beauty. We are also planning to visit the Con Dao Market. As I write this, I am filled with a sense of anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead.
