Marrakech Unveiled: A Day of Unexpected Discoveries

Today was a day of delightful contrasts here in Marrakech. I ventured beyond the bustling souks and medina to uncover some hidden gems, each offering a unique perspective on this captivating city. From the intricate artistry of Berber jewelry to the serene beauty of a lush garden and the innovative spirit of a digital park, Marrakech continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn.

My day began with a visit to Le MAP Marrakech - Monde des Arts de la Parure, a museum dedicated to the world of adornment. I must admit, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I was immediately captivated by the stunning architecture of the building itself. A modern take on traditional Moroccan design, it was a feast for the eyes even before I stepped inside.

The museum's collection is an impressive display of jewelry and textiles from various cultural regions. As I wandered through the dimly lit halls, I was struck by the intricate details and craftsmanship of each piece. From delicate Berber necklaces to elaborate headdresses, it was clear that adornment plays a significant role in Moroccan culture and beyond. While I appreciated the artistry on display, I did find myself wishing for more context and information about the pieces. Knowing more about the origins, significance, and cultural context of each item would have deepened my understanding and appreciation.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing myself in the world of art and adornment, I decided to seek refuge in nature at Anima, André Heller Garden. Located about 30 kilometers outside of Marrakech, the garden is easily accessible by a free shuttle service, making it a convenient escape from the city's hustle and bustle. As the shuttle wound its way through the countryside, I eagerly anticipated the serene oasis that awaited me.

Upon arriving at Anima, I was immediately struck by the sheer beauty and tranquility of the place. Created by Austrian artist André Heller, the garden is a magical blend of nature and art. Lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and towering trees create a peaceful sanctuary, while whimsical sculptures and installations add a touch of playful creativity. It felt like stepping into another world, far removed from the chaos of Marrakech.

I spent hours wandering along the shady paths, marveling at the diverse collection of plants and trees. From bamboo groves to palm-lined avenues, the garden is a botanical paradise. The sculptures, by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring, and Auguste Rodin, were seamlessly integrated into the landscape, adding an element of surprise and delight at every turn. The majestic Atlas Mountains, with the snow-capped Mount Toubkal, provided a breathtaking backdrop to this enchanting oasis.

One of the highlights of my visit was the Café Paul Bowles, where I enjoyed a refreshing glass of mint tea made with herbs grown in the garden. Sipping my tea on the rooftop terrace, I soaked in the panoramic views of the garden and the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the beauty that surrounded me.

Leaving Anima, I felt refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to embrace the final stop on my day's itinerary: Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdesalam. This unique park, located in the heart of Marrakech, offers a fascinating blend of history and technology. Originally created in the 18th century by Prince Moulay Abdesalam, the park was once a private garden. In 2005, it was transformed into a public space with free Wi-Fi hotspots, earning it the nickname Cyber Park.

As I strolled through the park, I was struck by the juxtaposition of old and new. Historic walls and lush greenery provided a serene backdrop for modern computer stations and digital displays. It was a fascinating example of how Marrakech seamlessly blends tradition with innovation.

I took advantage of the free Wi-Fi to catch up on emails and browse the internet. It was a surreal experience, sitting in a tranquil garden while simultaneously connected to the digital world. The park also features a Telecommunications Museum, which I found to be surprisingly interesting. The museum showcased the evolution of communication technology, from vintage telephones to modern smartphones. It was a reminder of how far we've come in such a short amount of time.

Before heading back to the riad, I decided to grab a bite to eat at Le Loft, a restaurant recommended for its modern ambiance and international cuisine. I enjoyed the contemporary decor, with its industrial-chic touches and pop art accents. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive. It was the perfect way to end a day of unexpected discoveries.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the many layers that make up Marrakech. It's a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern innovations, and where bustling souks give way to serene gardens. Each day here brings new surprises, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds. I am particularly excited about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a guided tour of Marrakech and a day trip to the Atlas Mountains. I am looking forward to experiencing the city from a local's perspective and exploring the stunning natural beauty that lies just beyond the city walls.

I am also contemplating visiting the ON MARCHE Festival, which is hosting contemporary dance performances, and the Aïcha des Gazelles Rally which celebrates female courage, both taking place this month in Marrakech.

For dinner, I'm considering La Table du riad, known for its high-quality cuisine, or Naranj Libanese for a flavorful Lebanese meal. Alternatively, I might try Rooftop Restaurant Koulchi Zine - Marrakech Medina for a meal with a view.

Until then, goodnight from Marrakech!

P.S. I almost forgot! I realized I still haven't bought a hat and sunglasses, which I had on my essentials list! I will need to find some time to visit MAX & Jan Medina tomorrow and see if I can find them there.
