Day 10: Conquering Huayna Picchu: A Breathtaking Climb Above Machu Picchu
Experience the thrill of climbing Huayna Picchu, savoring Cusco's flavors, and embracing the vibrant nightlife with friends.
Ascending to New Heights
Today was a day of unparalleled beauty and exhilaration. After days of exploring Cusco, I finally had the chance to ascend Huayna Picchu, the iconic peak that looms over Machu Picchu. The anticipation had been building, and I couldn't wait to see the world from that vantage point. I remember reading somewhere that the Incas considered Huayna Picchu a sacred place of astronomical importance, and I was excited to learn more about it.

The morning started early, as most adventures do. After a quick but satisfying breakfast at El Jardin - Healthy Food And Coffee, I met up with my friends. El Jardin was a delightful start to the day, with its fresh and healthy options fueling us up for the climb ahead. The café, nestled in the Plaza de Armas, was a perfect spot to watch the city come alive. I enjoyed a hearty bowl of porridge, which kept me full until the evening.

We made our way to Machu Picchu, and the base of Huayna Picchu. The trail began with a gentle slope, shared by those heading to Huchuy Picchu. At the junction, we turned right, ready to tackle the ascent. I had heard about the 'Stairs of Death,' but I tried not to focus on that too much. I was more excited about the views that awaited us at the top.
The climb was challenging, no doubt about it. The altitude certainly played a role, and I found myself pausing more often than usual to catch my breath. The steps were steep, and in some places, we had to use ropes to help us along. I was grateful for my comfortable hiking shoes, one of the trip essentials I hadn't forgotten! As we climbed, the views became increasingly spectacular. Machu Picchu unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of Inca architecture nestled in the mountains. The surrounding peaks, the Apus, stood guard, their snow-capped summits piercing the sky.
The view from the top of Huayna Picchu was nothing short of breathtaking. It was a moment of pure awe, a feeling of being on top of the world.
Reaching the summit was an incredible feeling of accomplishment. The panoramic views were simply stunning. From our vantage point, we could see the entire Machu Picchu complex, the Urubamba River snaking through the valley, and the endless expanse of the Andes. It was a perfect day, with clear skies and warm sunshine. We spent a long time at the top, soaking in the beauty and taking countless photos. It's a view I know I'll never forget.
The descent was just as challenging as the ascent, perhaps even more so. The steep steps required careful footing, and my knees were definitely feeling it by the time we reached the bottom. But the sense of accomplishment and the memories of the incredible views kept us going.
Back in Aguas Calientes, we were ravenous. We decided to try KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food for lunch, and it was an excellent choice. The restaurant prides itself on using local, organic ingredients, and the food was both delicious and beautifully presented. I opted for the Andean trout, which was cooked to perfection and served with a flavorful elderberry sauce. The atmosphere was casual yet refined, with indigenous-themed paintings adding to the ambiance.

After lunch, we explored Aguas Calientes a bit, soaking in the atmosphere of this bustling town at the foot of Machu Picchu. There were many tourists, but it was a nice place to walk around and take in the sights. I picked up a few souvenirs for Sofia, knowing she would love the colorful textiles and small trinkets.
As evening approached, we made our way back to Cusco. We freshened up at the hotel before heading out for dinner. Tonight, we chose Yaku Restaurant, and it was another culinary delight. The restaurant emphasizes using organic and local products from their farm in the Sacred Valley, which appealed to my interest in sustainable living. The presentation of each dish was like a work of art, and the flavors were incredible. I tried the alpaca steak, which was tender and flavorful, served on a bed of sweet potatoes.

After dinner, we decided to check out Los Perros, a lounge bar known for its relaxing atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of hiking and exploring. The bar was sectioned into individual artistic rooms, creating a cozy and intimate setting. We enjoyed some local drinks and shared stories of our adventures. It was a great way to end the day, laughing and reminiscing with friends.

I had forgotten my Spanish phrasebook, but luckily, my friends knew enough to help me communicate with the locals. Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming, and I felt a genuine connection to the culture. I really need to brush up on my Spanish before our next adventure!
As I sit here writing this, I'm already thinking about tomorrow. We'll be visiting the Centro Arqueológico de Chinchero and Maras, two more fascinating sites in the Sacred Valley. I'm excited to learn more about the history and culture of this region, and to see more of its breathtaking landscapes. I can't wait to share those experiences with you all as well. For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure.
Huayna Picchu was indeed a highlight of this trip, and I would recommend it to anyone who is up for the challenge. It's an experience that combines physical exertion with unparalleled beauty, and it's a memory that I will treasure forever. I am so glad I decided to visit Cusco in March, despite the possibility of rain. The cooler temperatures were perfect for hiking, and the occasional showers only added to the mystical atmosphere of the Andes. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that take you off the beaten path and challenge you to step outside your comfort zone.
