Today was a day of breathtaking views and tranquil discoveries here in Gran Paradiso National Park. Leaving behind the cozy comforts of Hotel du Grand Paradis - 1899 Auberge Boutique after a delightful breakfast , we set out to explore the heights of Monte Creya and the serene depths of Vallone dell'Urtier. It's amazing how much the landscape can vary in just a single day's journey!

Our first stop was Monte Creya. The drive there was stunning, with the SP47 road winding its way towards the Gran Paradiso National Park. The excitement was palpable as we parked the car and prepared for our ascent. Sofia, ever the enthusiastic explorer, was practically bouncing with energy. Maximilian, with his rock climbing experience, was eager to tackle the trails, while I was just hoping my hiking boots would hold up!
The hike up Monte Creya was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The trails were well-marked, but definitely steep in sections. Luckily, we had packed plenty of water and snacks, remembering the portable charger this time. The views along the way were simply stunning. As we climbed higher, the landscape opened up, revealing panoramic vistas of the Aosta Valley. I could see the snow-capped peaks in the distance, and the lush green valleys below. It felt like we were on top of the world.

The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir
Reaching the summit of Monte Creya was an exhilarating experience. Sofia was so proud of herself, and Maximilian was busy pointing out all the different peaks in the distance. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share this incredible experience with my family. I must admit, the remains of the old magnetite mines on Monte Creya were also fascinating, a testament to the region's rich history. It’s incredible to think that mining activities here date back to Roman times.
After our mountain adventure, we were ready for a change of pace. We drove towards Vallone dell'Urtier, a place recommended by a local we met yesterday. The drive from Cogne to Lillaz, where Vallone dell'Urtier is located, was only about 15 minutes.
Vallone dell'Urtier was a completely different world compared to Monte Creya. Instead of vast, open landscapes, we found ourselves in a serene, hidden valley, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. It felt like stepping into a fairytale. Sofia was immediately captivated by the wildflowers, which were in full bloom, adding bursts of color to the already picturesque landscape.

We strolled along the trails, enjoying the tranquility of the valley. The Urtier torrent gurgled nearby, its waters crystal clear. I felt a sense of peace and calm wash over me as we walked, hand in hand, as a family. We found a perfect spot for a picnic, where we unpacked our lunch and enjoyed the fresh mountain air. It was moments like these that made me realize how much I cherish these family trips.
Before heading back, we made a quick stop at Montura Store Aosta. I had been meaning to pick up a new hiking jacket, and Maximilian needed some new climbing gear. The store was well-stocked, and the staff were incredibly helpful, offering advice on the best trails and equipment. I ended up finding a fantastic jacket, and Maximilian found a new pair of climbing shoes he couldn't resist. It’s always a good idea to have the right equipment, especially when exploring the mountains.

For dinner, we decided to try La Lanterna del Duca. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu featured traditional Aosta Valley cuisine. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by hearty pasta dishes. Sofia, surprisingly, devoured a plate of polenta with wild mushrooms. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. From the heights of Monte Creya to the hidden beauty of Vallone dell'Urtier, Gran Paradiso National Park has truly captured our hearts. It's a place where you can challenge yourself physically, connect with nature, and create lasting memories with your loved ones.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II and Petit Poignon. I've heard the views from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II are incredible, and I'm excited to see what Petit Poignon has to offer. Perhaps we'll stop by 3ndy Bar Restaurant for a drink in the evening. Until then, goodnight from Gran Paradiso!
Oh, and I mustn’t forget to mention our lunch at Osteria Dei Viaggiatori. What a delightful experience! The cuisine was typical of the Piedmont region, and everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the tomini fritti and the trota salmonata alle erbe del Paradiso. Maximilian raved about the carne alla losa, which was cooked on a stone at 300 degrees. Sofia, of course, loved the crostata made with pasta di meliga. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning hike. The restaurant is located in Frera Superiore, a charming hamlet near Noasca, within Gran Paradiso National Park. It’s a great place to experience local cuisine in a beautiful setting.

And speaking of local experiences, I was so pleased that we decided to stop by Montura Store Aosta. I had been meaning to get a new Montura jacket for a while now, and I finally found the perfect one. The store had a great selection of outdoor clothing and equipment, and the staff was incredibly helpful. They even gave us some tips on local trails and activities. It’s always great to get advice from people who know the area well. The store itself is quite interesting, as it’s located in the former premises of Ottoz, a historical brand known for its spirits. It’s a symbolic passing of the torch between two brands that represent the essence of life in the high mountains. Montura Store Aosta is definitely a must-visit for anyone planning outdoor activities in the area.
I also wanted to mention the Hotel du Grand Paradis - 1899 Auberge Boutique, where we stayed last night. The hotel was charming and comfortable, with elegant rooms and a relaxing atmosphere. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the breakfast was delicious. The hotel is located in a central and peaceful position in Cogne, making it a perfect base for exploring Gran Paradiso National Park. It even has a small private spa, which I unfortunately didn’t have time to use. Maybe next time! The hotel is furnished in a 1900s style, which adds to its charm. It’s a great place to experience the history and culture of the Aosta Valley.
Gran Paradiso National Park is truly a special place. It’s a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with nature. It’s a place where you can challenge yourself physically and mentally. And it’s a place where you can create lasting memories with your family. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure in the Italian Alps.
