Day 4: Royal History and Alpine Heights

Today was a delightful blend of history and natural beauty, as we explored more of what Gran Paradiso National Park has to offer. Leaving the campsite early, we were eager to discover the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille and the breathtaking Lago Goletta. I was excited to share these experiences with my family, especially Sofia, who loves a good hike and a bit of history.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Brasserie Les Pertzes in Cogne. It’s a charming mountain restaurant known for its traditional cuisine with a modern twist. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of fresh bread, local cheese, and a strong Italian coffee. Maximilian enjoyed a pastry, while Sofia devoured a croissant with jam. Fortified, we set off towards our first destination: the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille.

The drive to Valsavarenche was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the towering peaks and lush valleys of Gran Paradiso. As we approached Orvieille, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green meadows and dense forests. The Royal Hunting House, once a favorite spot for Vittorio Emanuele II, now serves as a ranger station and a research facility. The history of the place is palpable, and it’s easy to imagine the royal hunts that once took place here.

We parked near the Hotel “A' l'Hostellerie du Paradis” and began our hike to the Hunting House. The trail meandered through a magnificent forest, occasionally opening up to reveal stunning views of the valley below. The ascent was gradual, making it manageable for Sofia, who was thrilled to spot a few squirrels along the way. The crisp mountain air and the scent of pine filled our lungs, making the hike a sensory delight.

Arriving at the Royal Hunting House, we took some time to explore the area and soak in the panoramic views. The house itself is a simple yet elegant structure, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. I couldn't help but reflect on the history of the place, imagining the royal entourage arriving on horseback, ready for a day of hunting. It was a tangible connection to the past, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to share it with my family.

After our historical interlude, it was time for some alpine adventure. We drove to Rhêmes-Notre-Dame, the starting point for our hike to Lago Goletta. The drive itself was stunning, with each turn revealing a new vista of the surrounding mountains.

The trail to Lago Goletta is well-marked and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The hike took us about 1.5 hours, and it was a rewarding experience. Sofia was particularly excited, as she loves hiking and exploring new places. The trail gradually ascends, leading you through an alpine environment with sparse vegetation. As we climbed, the views became increasingly spectacular, with the majestic Granta Parey reflected in the distance.

As we hiked, I couldn’t help but think about the importance of preserving these natural landscapes. Gran Paradiso National Park, with its rich biodiversity and stunning beauty, is a treasure that needs to be protected for future generations. It's places like these that remind me why I'm so passionate about sustainable travel and responsible tourism.

The beauty of Gran Paradiso lies not only in its majestic peaks and pristine lakes but also in its ability to transport you to another time, another world.

Reaching Lago Goletta was like stepping into a postcard. The crystal-clear waters of the lake reflected the surrounding mountains, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. We found a peaceful spot by the lake and enjoyed a picnic lunch, savoring the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature.

After our picnic, we took a leisurely stroll around the lake, soaking in the stunning views. Sofia, ever the explorer, was fascinated by the alpine flora and fauna, pointing out various wildflowers and trying to spot marmots. The lake is surrounded by well-marked trails, offering opportunities for further exploration. For those seeking a challenge, the trail continues to Col Bassac Dèrè, offering even more panoramic views.

As the day drew to a close, we began our descent back to Rhêmes-Notre-Dame. The hike down was just as enjoyable, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. We reached our car tired but exhilarated, our hearts full of the beauty and serenity of Lago Goletta.

For dinner, we decided to try Ristorante La Genzianella in Aosta. This restaurant is known for its friendly staff, great service, and delicious local cuisine. The cozy atmosphere and outdoor seating made it the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking. I enjoyed a hearty polenta dish, while Maximilian opted for a meat dish. Sofia, of course, chose pasta, which she devoured with gusto.

After dinner, we decided to check out Old Distillery, a local bar in Aosta. It had a rustic décor and a welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of local craft beer, while Maximilian savored a glass of exquisite wine. Sofia enjoyed a delicious snack. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Gran Paradiso National Park. From the royal hunting grounds to the serene alpine lake, every moment was a treasure. As we head into tomorrow, we plan to visit Monte Creya and Vallone dell'Urtier, hoping for more breathtaking views and memorable experiences. I'm also looking forward to visiting Montura Store Aosta, as I desperately need a portable charger and sunscreen, which I completely forgot to pack!

As we drove back to our campsite, under a sky full of stars, I knew that this trip to Gran Paradiso would be etched in our memories forever. The blend of history, nature, and family bonding made it an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
