Today was a day of exploration and relaxation as we ventured to Haycock Island and Blacksand Beach, two of Hinchinbrook Island's most stunning natural attractions. The anticipation of discovering these hidden gems filled us with excitement as we set out, ready to immerse ourselves in the island's unique beauty. It's days like these that remind me why we chose Hinchinbrook for our family adventure – the promise of unspoiled landscapes and tranquil moments away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Marine Hotel in Lucinda. It's a charming spot, and we enjoyed some classic Aussie fare before heading out for our adventure. Maximilian, Sofia and I enjoyed the outdoor setting and friendly service, which set the tone for a perfect day. I had read some reviews of the hotel prior to leaving, and the positive comments about the meals were spot on.

After breakfast, we boarded a local boat service to Haycock Island. Known by some as the Scout’s Hat, the island's unique rock formations were the result of past tectonic plate upheavals. The boat ride itself was an experience, offering panoramic views of the Hinchinbrook Channel and the surrounding azure waters. The air was crisp and salty, and the anticipation of setting foot on this uninhabited island was palpable. Sofia was particularly excited, imagining all sorts of hidden treasures and wildlife encounters.

Upon arrival at Haycock Island, we were immediately struck by its raw, untouched beauty. The island is a haven for Bridled Terns, and we observed these birds nesting and soaring above. The rocky cliffs and lush rainforest created a dramatic landscape, perfect for exploration. We spent a couple of hours hiking along the trails, taking in the stunning views of the Great Barrier Reef and the surrounding islands. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the island's unique ecosystem.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found in the simplest of moments, surrounded by nature's untouched beauty.

After our exploration of Haycock Island, we headed back to Lucinda for lunch at Vista Hinchinbrook. This place is a gem. Perched atop the Cardwell Range, it offers breathtaking views of Hinchinbrook Island and the channel. Maximilian and I enjoyed the scenery as much as the food. Sofia, of course, was more interested in spotting wildlife. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we made our way to Blacksand Beach. This beach is famous for its unique black sands, a striking contrast to the typical white sandy shores found elsewhere. The beach is framed by lush greenery and offers stunning coastal views, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and photography. Sofia was thrilled to run along the beach, leaving footprints in the dark sand. Maximilian and I took the opportunity to relax and soak in the tranquil ambiance. The gentle sounds of waves crashing against the shore created a serene atmosphere, a perfect escape from the everyday.

We spent the afternoon swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the nearby trails. The water was refreshing, and the sun was warm and inviting. We even tried our hand at snorkeling, marveling at the vibrant marine life beneath the surface. Blacksand Beach truly lived up to its reputation as a hidden gem of Queensland.

Before heading back to our campsite, we stopped by Ob La Di in Cardwell. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs and perhaps a new dress for myself. The store is a charming fashion haven, showcasing a range of stylish apparel and accessories. The friendly staff were incredibly helpful, offering styling advice and making the shopping experience a delight. I found a beautiful dress that I know I'll cherish for years to come.

For dinner, we decided to try Terry and Mamiko's, a local eatery known for its scrumptious fish and chips. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for families. We enjoyed a satisfying meal while taking in the beautiful views across to Hinchinbrook Island. The fish and chips were indeed delicious, crispy and flavorful, and the service was top-notch. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our campsite, feeling grateful for the incredible experiences of the day. Hinchinbrook Island continues to surprise and delight us with its natural beauty and tranquility. It's a place where we can truly connect with nature and create lasting memories as a family.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're excited about our planned trip with Absolute North Charters. We'll be exploring Goold Island National Park, another gem in this region. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing more of the local wildlife and perhaps trying our hand at fishing. We'll be having breakfast at Lucinda Point Hotel Motel before heading out, and dinner at the Royal Hotel when we return. Maximilian is also keen to check out the Original North Australian Bar & Grill for a relaxing evening drink.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the simple joys of life. Whether it's exploring uninhabited islands, relaxing on black sand beaches, or enjoying a delicious meal with loved ones, these are the moments that truly matter. Hinchinbrook Island has given us the opportunity to slow down, appreciate nature, and create lasting memories as a family. And as we continue our journey, I'm excited to see what other wonders this incredible island has in store for us.

I must remember to buy a waterproof jacket and binoculars, which I forgot to pack from Heidelberg. I also need to get a new memory card for my camera. Small things that make a big difference.

It's experiences like these that make me appreciate our decision to embrace sustainable living and immerse ourselves in the natural environment. Seeing Sofia connect with nature and learn about the importance of conservation is incredibly rewarding. And as we continue our journey, I hope to share more stories and insights that inspire others to explore the world in a responsible and meaningful way.
