Family Adventure on Hinchinbrook Island: Exploring Australia's Natural Gem
Day 7: Island Hopping and Coastal Delights: A Day of Adventure Near Hinchinbrook
Explore Goold Island's natural beauty, enjoy local cuisine in Cardwell, and experience the charm of coastal Queensland with family.
A Day of Island Exploration and Coastal Flavors
Today was a delightful mix of island exploration and indulging in local flavors along the Queensland coast. It’s days like these that remind me why we chose this adventure, trading our cozy Heidelberg apartment for the raw beauty of Australia. The salty air, the sound of waves, and the laughter of Sofia – these are the moments I want to hold onto forever.
Our day began with an early breakfast at the Lucinda Point Hotel Motel. It's a classic Aussie pub, and I must say, there's something uniquely comforting about starting the day with a hearty meal in such a laid-back atmosphere. Maximilian enjoyed a classic bacon and eggs, while Sofia opted for pancakes with maple syrup. I chose a lighter option of toast with avocado, fueling up for our day of exploration. It was a lovely start, surrounded by the friendly chatter of locals and fellow travelers.
After breakfast, we headed to Lucinda to meet Absolute North Charters for our trip to Goold Island National Park. The ferry ride itself was an experience, offering stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding islands. The waters were calm, and the sky was a brilliant blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds. Sofia was particularly excited, pointing out every bird and wave we passed. The ferry service was efficient and comfortable, making the journey all the more enjoyable.

Upon arriving at Goold Island, we were immediately struck by its natural beauty. The island is a mix of granite outcrops, eucalypt woodlands, and sandy beaches – a perfect playground for nature lovers like us. We decided to embark on the Western Beach walk, a moderate 4km return track that took us through open woodland. The walk was easy enough for Sofia, and she loved spotting different insects and plants along the way. We even saw a few mudskippers and crabs amongst the mangroves, which fascinated her.
The island is significant to the Aboriginal people, and it was interesting to learn about their culture and history. We saw some reminders of their special culture, including middens and fish traps. It’s important to acknowledge and respect the Traditional Owners of this land, the Bandjin and Girramay people.
We spent a good part of the afternoon relaxing on the Spit (Western Beach), enjoying a picnic lunch with a superb view of Hinchinbrook Island. The picnic tables and shelter shed provided a comfortable spot to unwind. Sofia built sandcastles, while Maximilian and I simply soaked in the tranquility of the surroundings. The clear waters were inviting, but we decided against swimming due to the presence of estuarine crocodiles.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
Leaving Goold Island, we took the ferry back to the mainland and drove to Cardwell for a late lunch at Cardwell @ the Beach. This restaurant features a poolside dining area with tropical gardens, creating a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed fresh seafood and local produce, savoring the flavors of the region. Sofia was thrilled to have a table right by the pool, though we made sure she didn’t get too close!

After lunch, we took a stroll along the Cardwell Jetty, enjoying the sea breeze and the views of the coastline. It was a perfect way to stretch our legs and enjoy the laid-back vibe of this coastal town. We even spotted a few local fishermen trying their luck off the jetty.
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at the Royal Hotel in Cardwell. This hotel offers elevated pub classics in a relaxed setting. Maximilian and I both opted for the grilled barramundi, while Sofia chose the classic fish and chips. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was a perfect way to end our day of island exploration and coastal delights.

To cap off the evening, we made a quick stop at the Original North Australian Bar & Grill for a nightcap. This establishment is apparently the oldest pub in North Queensland. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, while Maximilian sampled one of their craft beers. The atmosphere was lively, with locals sharing stories and laughter. It was a great way to soak in the local culture and unwind after a busy day.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful part of the world with my family. It’s moments like these that make our journey so special. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Centre and Cardwell Jetty a bit more. Sofia is also excited about visiting the Garden & gifts shop, so that will be a treat for her. I am also looking forward to having breakfast at Terry and Mamiko's, lunch at Wild Local, and dinner at Hotel Hinchinbrook. I can't wait to share more of our experiences with you all!
It’s funny, before we left Germany, I was so caught up in the logistics of the trip – the packing, the planning, the endless to-do lists. Now, standing here on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, I realize that the true essence of travel lies not in the destinations we reach, but in the moments we create and the memories we cherish along the way. And even though I miss my sauna sessions back in Finland, I’m starting to feel a sense of belonging here, a connection to this land and its people.
Good night from Hinchinbrook Island!
P.S. I really need to remember to buy binoculars. They would have been great for bird watching today!
Reflecting on the day, I realize how much I cherish these moments of exploration with my family. It's not just about seeing new places, but about creating shared memories that will last a lifetime.
