Immerse yourself in Florence's rich history and artistic grandeur. Discover iconic landmarks and savor Tuscan flavors with friends.
A Florentine Friday
Today, Florence truly unveiled its historical grandeur. Accompanied by my friends, I embarked on a journey through the city's most iconic landmarks. From the imposing Palazzo Vecchio to the serene Basilica of Santa Croce, and not forgetting the charming Ponte Vecchio, every corner told a story. The flavors of Florence also played a significant role, with delightful culinary experiences that added warmth to a day filled with art and history.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli. It was a delightful way to start our Florentine adventure. The cafe, steeped in history and elegance, was the perfect place to fuel up for a day of exploration. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of pastries, creating an inviting atmosphere that made us feel instantly at home. Greta would have loved the pastries here; I'll have to bring her back someday.
Our first stop was the magnificent Palazzo Vecchio. This imposing structure is a testament to Florence's rich political history. As we approached, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The architecture is simply breathtaking, a perfect example of the city's artistic prowess. Inside, the Palazzo was even more impressive. We wandered through opulent rooms adorned with stunning frescoes and intricate tapestries. The Salone dei Cinquecento was particularly awe-inspiring, its sheer scale and artistic detail leaving me speechless. Kian would have been running around like crazy in that hall! We also learned that Palazzo Vecchio is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the painter Giovanni Stradano and a display of Thomas J. Price's sculptures. It's amazing to see contemporary art juxtaposed against such historical backdrop.

Florence is a city where every stone whispers stories of the past, inviting you to become part of its timeless narrative.
Next on our itinerary was the Ponte Vecchio, Florence's oldest bridge. As we approached, the sight of the bridge lined with shops was truly captivating. The bridge has a fascinating history, surviving floods and even World War II, and is the only bridge in Florence that wasn't destroyed by the Nazis. It's hard to believe that it was once home to butchers before becoming the haven for goldsmiths and jewelers that it is today. The sparkling displays were hard to resist, and I ended up buying a small silver pendant for Greta. I know she'll appreciate the craftsmanship and the history behind it. We also learned about the 'love locks' tradition and how the authorities are trying to discourage it to protect the bridge's structure.

Lunch was at Vini e Vecchi Sapori, a charming osteria known for its authentic Florentine cuisine. Securing a reservation was essential, as this family-run gem is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel like part of their family. We savored traditional dishes like ribollita and pappa al pomodoro, each bite bursting with flavor. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality. The duck ragu was particularly memorable. I can understand why Rick Steves recommends it.

In the afternoon, we visited the Basilica of Santa Croce, a place of immense historical and artistic significance. The basilica is the final resting place of many illustrious Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. As we stepped inside, I was struck by the grandeur of the architecture and the wealth of artistic treasures it held. The stained-glass windows cast a colorful glow, illuminating the vast interior. The tombs were impressive, each a masterpiece in its own right. We admired Cimabue's crucifix, a poignant reminder of the basilica's rich history. I was particularly moved by the simple yet elegant design of the Basilica. The contrast of the gray stone, terracotta floor, and white plaster created a harmonious and solemn atmosphere.

Before dinner, we indulged in some retail therapy at Rinascente Firenze. This department store is more than just a place to shop; it's an experience. The store itself is a blend of history and modernity, with a focus on craftsmanship and local products. We explored the various floors, each offering a unique selection of goods. From high-end fashion to artisanal crafts, there was something for everyone. I was particularly impressed by the food hall on the fifth floor, which showcased the best of Tuscan agricultural tradition. The terrace offered breathtaking views of the city, a perfect spot to take a break from shopping and soak in the Florentine atmosphere. I found a beautiful leather-bound journal for myself, a perfect memento of this trip and a place to jot down my thoughts and experiences.

Dinner was at La Buchetta Food & Wine Restaurant, a cozy establishment known for its romantic ambiance and exceptional Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant's intimate setting was perfect for a relaxed and enjoyable meal. We started with a mozzarella cheese tasting, a delightful introduction to the region's culinary delights. For the main course, we opted for the gnocchi with pork cheek, a dish that was simply divine. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was impeccable. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, guiding us through the menu and recommending the perfect wine pairings. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As the day drew to a close, we strolled along the Arno River, reflecting on the incredible experiences we had shared. Florence had captivated us with its beauty, history, and culinary delights. It was a day filled with laughter, discovery, and unforgettable memories. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures—exploring the Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace, and Giardino Bardini—I am filled with anticipation. I also plan to visit Mad - Souls & Spirits for a taste of Florence's nightlife. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds, but for now, I'll cherish the memories of this remarkable day.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Boboli Gardens and the Pitti Palace, hoping to delve even deeper into the artistic and horticultural treasures of Florence. Perhaps I'll even pick up a bottle of wine to bring back home to Bamberg. It's these small moments, shared with friends, that make traveling so worthwhile. I'm looking forward to sharing those experiences with you all soon!
Until then, Arrivederci from Florence!
