A Day of Florentine Discoveries
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of the sacred and the spectacular, the historical and the breathtaking. Florence, as always, revealed its layers to us, offering new perspectives and unforgettable moments. Sharing these experiences with my friends made it all the more special, creating memories we'll cherish long after we've left this enchanting city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo. Although the reviews I read mentioned a slightly overcooked asparagus, I found the meal to be a delightful start to our Florentine adventure. The ambiance was charming, and the company even better. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Basilica di San Lorenzo.
The Basilica di San Lorenzo, a place steeped in history, was our first stop. It's fascinating how this church, with its roots stretching back to the 4th century, evolved over time, becoming the parish church of the Medici family. The architectural genius of Brunelleschi is evident everywhere, even though the facade remains unfinished. Greta, with her librarian's eye for detail, was particularly captivated by the Old Sacristy, pointing out the harmonious geometric designs and the intricate astronomical depictions on the dome. It's incredible to think that this space, once a Medici burial ground, is now considered a cornerstone of Renaissance architecture. I found myself particularly drawn to the story of Michelangelo's unbuilt facade. To think that his grand vision, a testament to his genius, never came to fruition due to lack of funds and shifting trends is quite humbling. Seeing the wooden model at the Casa Buonarroti museum is now definitely on my list. I made a mental note to perhaps try to learn more about the history of the Medici family, as their impact on Florence is undeniable.
The beauty of Florence lies not just in its iconic landmarks, but in the hidden corners and the stories etched in its stones.
Next on our itinerary was the Campanile di Giotto. I had read that climbing the 414 steps would reward us with incredible views, and it did not disappoint! The climb itself was a bit of a challenge, but the landings along the way provided welcome respite and stunning glimpses of the city unfolding below. Reaching the top, we were greeted by a panoramic vista of Florence, a sea of red-tiled roofs punctuated by the Duomo's magnificent dome. Kian, of course, was full of energy and raced up the stairs, only to be winded at the top, declaring it the best view ever. Even Greta, who usually prefers to keep her feet firmly on the ground, was impressed by the breathtaking scenery. The intricate marble cladding of the Campanile itself was a sight to behold, a testament to the artistic vision of Giotto and his successors. It's amazing to think that the bell tower was constructed over several decades, with different architects contributing to its design, yet it maintains a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic. I learned that large bags aren't allowed inside, so it's best to leave them at the luggage storage beforehand.

Lunch at Il Vezzo was a delightful interlude. The restaurant's focus on fresh, local ingredients was evident in every dish. I opted for the *pappardelle fatta in casa al ragù di filetto al coltello*, a hearty and flavorful pasta dish that was simply divine. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, a perfect setting for a leisurely lunch with friends. I was pleased to see that they offered vegetarian options as well. Greta particularly enjoyed the *Spaghetti di verdure su vellutata di zucchine e olive taggiasche*. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back home in Bamberg, perhaps incorporating some Franconian ingredients into the mix. As we savored our meals, we discussed our next adventure, eagerly anticipating the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to Piazzale Michelangelo. The climb up the hill was a bit of a trek, but the anticipation of the view spurred us on. Arriving at the Piazzale, we were greeted by a crowd of fellow travelers, all eager to witness the spectacle of the sunset over Florence. And what a spectacle it was! The golden light bathed the city in a warm glow, casting long shadows and highlighting the architectural details of the Duomo, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Ponte Vecchio. It was truly a magical moment, one that I'll never forget. I managed to capture some stunning photos, hoping to preserve the beauty of this scene for posterity. Even Kian, usually restless and impatient, was captivated by the breathtaking view, pointing out the various landmarks and asking endless questions about the city's history. The replicas of Michelangelo's masterpieces added to the artistic ambiance of the Piazzale, a fitting tribute to the Renaissance genius who shaped the city's artistic identity.

For dinner, we ventured to Osteria dell'Enoteca, a restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and extensive wine list. The ambiance was rustic yet elegant, with exposed brick walls and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I decided to try the *Bistecca dell'Osteria*, a traditional Florentine steak grilled over an open flame. It was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and seasoned with just a touch of salt and rosemary. Greta opted for the *cauliflower flan*, while my friends enjoyed the *wild boar with polenta*. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier helped us choose a local Chianti that paired perfectly with our meal. I learned that Osteria dell'Enoteca was featured by Eater as one of the 10 best new restaurants in Florence in 2018, and I can certainly see why. The focus on quality ingredients and traditional Tuscan flavors, combined with a warm and inviting atmosphere, makes it a must-visit for any food lover.

To cap off our evening, we decided to indulge in some expertly crafted cocktails at Locale Firenze, a bar housed in a restored 13th-century palace. The ambiance was sophisticated and stylish, with meticulously restored frescoes and modern art pieces creating a unique and captivating atmosphere. I opted for the Tuscan Spring, a refreshing blend of local gin, fresh herbs, and citrus, while Greta chose the Medici Elixir, a concoction that paid tribute to Florence's storied past with vintage spirits and spiced notes. The bartenders were true artisans, crafting each cocktail with precision and care. I learned that Locale Firenze is known for its commitment to creativity and quality, and that it was ranked #51 on The World's 50 Best Bars list in 2021. Sipping our cocktails in this historic setting, surrounded by friends, was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
