Tilcara's Embrace: Heights and Heritage
Today was a day of embracing Tilcara in all its glory. From panoramic views atop a challenging climb to immersing myself in local art and history, and finally, relishing the region's culinary delights, it was a day that painted a vivid picture of this charming town. It’s days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo journey in the first place.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kusikanky. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the promise of local flavors filled the air. I decided on some traditional Argentine pastries, accompanied by a strong coffee to fuel my upcoming hike. Kusikanky seemed like a local favourite, with its lively atmosphere and friendly staff. I could see why it’s so highly rated. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for starting the day right.

With renewed energy, I set off to conquer Cerro de la Cruz. The trail began innocently enough, but it soon turned into a steep climb. The air was thin, a stark reminder of Tilcara's altitude, which sits around 8,200 feet. I remembered the stories of the Argentine national team training here to acclimate to high altitudes. I definitely felt the burn, but the thought of the panoramic views kept me going. I even passed a few locals who seemed to be taking the climb in stride, a testament to their adaptation to the altitude. The ascent was challenging, but the views became increasingly rewarding with every step. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the ever-expanding vista of Tilcara nestled in the valley, surrounded by the vibrant hues of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. It reminded me of hiking back in Franconian Switzerland, though the landscapes were vastly different. The rocky paths and the arid vegetation were a stark contrast to the lush greenery of Bamberg.

The climb may be tough, but the reward is a view that etches itself into your memory forever.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the summit. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. Tilcara sprawled beneath me, a tapestry of adobe houses and cobblestone streets, framed by the majestic mountains. The colors of the landscape were incredible, a mix of earthy reds, browns, and greens, all bathed in the soft morning light. I could see the winding paths of the Quebrada de Humahuaca stretching into the distance. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reward for the physical exertion. I took some time to simply sit and absorb the beauty, capturing photos to share with Greta and Kian back home. I imagined telling Kian stories of the towering mountains and the tiny houses below, hoping to ignite his own sense of adventure. After taking in the stunning views, the descent was much easier. I made my way back down, my legs a little wobbly but my spirit soaring. I took my time, enjoying the reversed perspective and the play of light and shadow on the landscape.
Back in town, I decided to immerse myself in the local art scene with a visit to the Ernesto Soto Avendaño Museum. Housed in a historic building, the museum was dedicated to the works of the renowned Argentine sculptor. I was particularly interested in seeing the sculptures and sketches related to the Monument to the Heroes of Independence in Humahuaca, a piece I hoped to see later in my trip.

The museum itself was a treasure trove of history and art. It occupies the house that belonged to Colonel Don Manuel Álvarez Prado, a hero of the Quebrada de Humahuaca during the Argentine War of Independence. The museum was inaugurated in 1974 and retains its original colonial architecture. As I wandered through the rooms, I admired Soto Avendaño's sculptures and sketches, each piece telling a story of Argentina’s history and culture. I learned about his life and work, his dedication to portraying Argentine identity through his art. The museum also showcased belongings of Colonel Álvarez Prado, offering a glimpse into the life of a local hero. There was even an exhibition of ceramics by Verónica Sansone, evoking the connection between nature and spirituality. The guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the museum, providing valuable context and insights.
Leaving the museum, I felt a deeper connection to Tilcara and its rich cultural heritage. It was fascinating to learn about the region’s history through the eyes of its artists and heroes. It reminded me of my work restoring historical musical instruments, preserving the stories and craftsmanship of the past. I decided to treat myself to a late lunch at Chicha Libre Resto Bar. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere and a menu filled with local specialties. I opted for a traditional Argentine dish, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Restaurant Sirviñacu for dinner. The restaurant was known for its regional cuisine and cozy ambiance. I decided to try the cazuela de llama, a local stew made with llama meat and vegetables. It was a hearty and flavorful dish, perfect for a cool evening in the mountains. I savoured every bite, reflecting on the day’s adventures. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with live music adding to the ambiance. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Tilcara.

The bar had a magical atmosphere, with live music and stunning views of the ravine. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences. I chatted with a few locals, learning more about Tilcara and its culture. They were friendly and welcoming, eager to share their stories and traditions. I even got a recommendation for tomorrow: El mirador de Tilcara, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the town and surrounding landscape.
