Day 2: Tilcara's Hidden Gems: A Day of Natural Wonders and Local Crafts
Exploring Tilcara's natural beauty at Garganta del Diablo and Altura Botanical Garden, then immersing myself in local art and flavors.
A Day of Discovery in Tilcara
Today was a day of exploring the diverse offerings of Tilcara, from its dramatic natural landscapes to its vibrant local culture. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo journey in the first place – to immerse myself fully in the heart of a new place and uncover its hidden treasures. I'm finding that traveling alone offers a unique perspective, allowing me to connect with the environment and the people on a deeper level.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Los Puestos Restaurante. I fueled up with a strong coffee and a traditional medialuna, which gave me the energy I needed for the adventures ahead. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed watching the locals start their day as I planned mine. I made a mental note to try one of their *picadas criollas* later in the trip.
My first destination was the Garganta del Diablo, a natural wonder located about 5 km from the center of Tilcara. I opted for a vehicle to get closer, followed by a trek to the main attraction. The views along the way were breathtaking, with the landscape offering incredible vistas. The trail was surrounded by towering rock formations. As I hiked, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale of the gorge. The name, Devil's Throat, certainly seemed fitting for such a dramatic landscape.

The walk to the waterfall was invigorating, and I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes, one of the trip essentials I remembered to pack. The sun was warm, but the air was crisp. I took a moment to appreciate the solitude and the stunning views. I imagined bringing Greta and Kian here one day, sharing this experience with them. I could picture Kian scrambling over the rocks, his eyes wide with wonder.
The earth has music for those who listen.
Reaching the waterfall was a rewarding experience. The cascade was powerful and awe-inspiring. I spent some time taking photographs and simply enjoying the moment. The sounds of the water crashing against the rocks were incredibly soothing, a stark contrast to the ruggedness of the landscape. I felt a sense of accomplishment, having made it to this hidden gem. I took some pictures with my camera, hoping to capture the essence of this place.
After the Garganta del Diablo, I headed to the Altura Botanical Garden, located within the Pucará de Tilcara. At 2,580 meters above sea level, the garden showcases the unique flora of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the Puna region. I was immediately struck by the diversity of plant life, from towering cacti to delicate herbs. The garden is divided into sections, each highlighting different types of vegetation. I wandered through the various areas, admiring the ingenuity of nature.

One of the highlights was the Piedra Campana, a stone that rings like a bell when struck. I gave it a tap and was surprised by the clear, resonant sound. It was a whimsical touch that added to the charm of the garden. I also appreciated the medicinal plants section, where I learned about the traditional uses of various herbs. It reminded me of Greta and her passion for books; I could imagine her poring over ancient texts, uncovering the secrets of these plants.
As I strolled through the garden, I reflected on my time in Bamberg and my work restoring historical musical instruments. There's a certain parallel between preserving cultural artifacts and conserving natural landscapes. Both require a deep appreciation for history and a commitment to safeguarding it for future generations. It reinforced my belief in the importance of cultural preservation, a cause close to my heart.
After immersing myself in nature, it was time to explore the local crafts. I visited the Paseo Artesanal De Pucará, a bustling market filled with handmade goods. The market was a sensory overload, with vibrant colors, intricate designs, and the sounds of vendors hawking their wares. I was immediately drawn to the textiles, with their intricate patterns and rich hues. I purchased a small rug with a traditional design, a memento of my time in Tilcara.

I also sampled some local delicacies, including empanadas and *mate*. The empanadas were savory and satisfying, while the *mate* was a bit of an acquired taste. I enjoyed chatting with the vendors, learning about their craft and their lives. It was a reminder of the importance of supporting local artisans and businesses.
For lunch, I stopped at Restaurant El Patio, just a short walk from the central plaza. The restaurant is known for its authentic Argentine cuisine and reasonable prices. I ordered *tamalitos*, which were flavorful and filling. The service was excellent, and I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant. The chef, Anita Ponce, clearly has a passion for her craft, and it shines through in her dishes.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at La Rockola for dinner. This restaurant offered a different vibe, with a lively atmosphere and a menu featuring local cuisine. I opted for a hearty stew, perfect for a chilly evening. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, and I enjoyed soaking in the energy of the place.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll through the town square. The air was filled with music, and I watched as people danced and socialized. It was a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery. I thought about Kian and how much he would enjoy the music and the lively atmosphere. I made a mental note to bring him back here someday.
As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting the Cerro de la Cruz and the Ernesto Soto Avendaño Museum, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had today. Tilcara has a way of captivating you, of drawing you in with its natural beauty and its rich culture. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this remarkable place.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Cerro de la Cruz for panoramic views and the Ernesto Soto Avendaño Museum to delve deeper into the region's history and art. Perhaps I'll end the day at YOLO Tilcara, a local bar, to unwind. I'm also looking forward to trying Kusikanky for breakfast and Chicha Libre Resto Bar for lunch.
