Adios, Tilcara!

As my incredible solo journey through Tilcara draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the experiences, the people, and the landscapes that have shaped my perspective over these past thirteen days. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown by, and I’m filled with a mix of gratitude and a tinge of sadness as I prepare to leave this enchanting town.

My final day in Tilcara began with a hearty breakfast at Kactus. The aroma of freshly baked croissants filled the air, mingling with the rich scent of Argentine coffee. I opted for the Ejecutivo breakfast, a delightful spread of eggs on toast, cheese and ham, accompanied by café con leche, orange juice, and water. It was the perfect way to fuel up for one last exploration of Tilcara's charming streets.

With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I set out to visit Plaza Sargento Antonino Peloc. The plaza, named in honor of a local hero, was a vibrant hub of activity. I watched as locals went about their daily routines, children played, and vendors set up their stalls, offering a glimpse into the heart of Tilcara's community. I took a moment to appreciate the monument to Antonino Peloc, a figure of local pride. It was a reminder of the rich history and the strong sense of identity that permeates this region. I imagined the stories the plaza could tell, the celebrations and gatherings it had hosted over the years.

The beauty of solo travel lies not only in the places you see but in the person you discover within yourself.

Next on my itinerary was Plazoleta Antenor Sajama, a smaller, more intimate square. This plazoleta is named after Antenor Sajama, a young man from Huichaira who lost his life during the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano in the Falklands War. Sajama is remembered as a local hero. Visiting this peaceful spot offered a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made by individuals during times of conflict. The plazoleta, lovingly maintained, was a testament to the enduring memory of a local son.

For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a traditional Argentine meal at Peña La Juana Tilcara. Although it seems the restaurant might be closed these days, in my memories I can still taste the flavors of the local cuisine and hear the sounds of traditional music. I savored each bite, appreciating the culinary heritage of the region.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, I sought out La carpa de Doña Panchita, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. I enjoyed a refreshing drink, soaking in the ambiance and chatting with fellow travelers. The bar was a melting pot of cultures, with people from all corners of the globe sharing stories and laughter.

For my final dinner in Tilcara, I chose Nazareno resto bar, enticed by its reputation for serving authentic Argentine cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu that showcased the best of regional ingredients. I opted for a local specialty, perhaps the cazuela de llama, and a glass of Argentine wine. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect culmination to my culinary explorations in Tilcara.

Looking back on my 13-day adventure, I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Tilcara community. From the friendly faces I encountered in the plazas to the passionate artisans I met in the markets, I felt welcomed and embraced by the local culture. I will cherish the memories of exploring ancient ruins, hiking through breathtaking landscapes, and immersing myself in the vibrant traditions of this unique corner of Argentina.

This trip was a reminder of the importance of stepping outside of one's comfort zone and embracing the unknown. As a restorer of historical musical instruments, I often find myself immersed in the past. But this journey to Tilcara allowed me to connect with the present, to experience a different way of life, and to appreciate the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.

I'm particularly grateful for having undertaken this journey solo. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with locals on a deeper level, and to discover a new sense of self-reliance and confidence. As someone who typically travels with my family, this solo adventure was a refreshing departure from my routine, and I feel rejuvenated and inspired by the experience.

Though I’m eager to return home to Greta and Kian, I know a piece of my heart will forever remain in Tilcara. The memories I’ve made here will undoubtedly shape my perspective and enrich my life for years to come. I’m already looking forward to sharing my experiences with my family and perhaps even inspiring them to embark on their own cultural expeditions. I'll be sure to bring back stories of the music, the food, and the breathtaking landscapes, and maybe even try to recreate some of the local dishes in my own kitchen.

As I pack my bags and prepare for my journey back to Germany, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the magic of Tilcara, and I am excited to share my stories and insights with the world. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll return to this enchanting town, to once again immerse myself in its culture and beauty.

Adios, Tilcara! Thank you for the memories.

There is no Itinerary for tomorrow, as this is the end of my trip.
