Finding Harmony in Art and Nature

Today, Naoshima continued to surprise and inspire me. The island's unique blend of art, culture, and natural beauty has a way of seeping into your soul. It's a place where you can truly lose yourself in the moment, finding inspiration in the most unexpected corners. Today was a day of discovery, reflection, and a deeper appreciation for the power of art.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at SPARKY'S Coffee. It's conveniently located near the ferry terminal. As a restorer of antique furniture, I appreciate the café's retro vibe, reminiscent of old movies. I savored a breakfast combo, fueling up for another day of exploration. The coffee was excellent, and the atmosphere was just what I needed to start my day on a positive note. It reminded me of some of the quirky cafes Astrid and I used to visit in Copenhagen.

With a spring in my step, I headed to my first destination: the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This outdoor installation at the Benesse House Museum is based on Feng Shui principles. I learned that the artist, Cai Guo-Qiang, found the best spot on Naoshima to create this work. While the actual bathing experience is usually reserved for hotel guests, I was still captivated by the site. The way the Taihu rocks and the American-made hot tub were arranged was fascinating. I could feel the energy of the earth flowing through the space. Although I couldn't take a dip, just being there was a tranquil and inspiring experience. It made me think about the importance of finding harmony between nature and human creations, something I strive for in my own work.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on my list was Les Archives du Cœur. This museum is dedicated to exploring human emotion through audio-visual installations. The main attraction is a collection of heartbeats from people around the world. As I entered the building, I was immediately enveloped in a symphony of rhythmic pulses. Each heartbeat told a story, a life lived. It was a powerful and moving experience. I spent a long time listening to the various recordings, reflecting on the shared human experience. The museum also has a recording room where visitors can add their own heartbeat to the archive. I considered doing it, but I felt a bit self-conscious. Perhaps another time. The Archives du Cœur left a lasting impression on me. It was a reminder that we are all connected, that every life has value, and that even the smallest things, like a heartbeat, can be incredibly meaningful. It reminded me of Astrid and the steady rhythm of her heart when I hold her close.

After such an emotionally charged experience, I needed a break. Lunch at Perma_Naoshima (パーマ) was just what I needed. This ramen restaurant is known for its authentic flavors and warm hospitality. The cozy atmosphere made me feel right at home. I ordered their specialty ramen. It was delicious! The broth was rich and savory, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. It was the perfect comfort food after a morning of artistic exploration. I learned that Perma_Naoshima is located in a renovated wooden house that used to be a barber shop. The interior design is quite unique, with exposed wooden structures and corrugated iron sheets. It creates a world where the ordinary and extraordinary blend together. It reminded me a bit of my workshop back in Silkeborg, where I try to blend old-world craftsmanship with modern sensibilities.

In the afternoon, I made my way to see George Rickey's Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82. This kinetic sculpture is located near the Benesse House Museum. It's a magnificent example of how art can interact with its environment. The sculpture consists of three squares that move gently in the breeze. The way they sway and turn is mesmerizing. I spent a long time watching the sculpture, admiring its simplicity and elegance. It's a perfect example of how art can be both beautiful and thought-provoking. The sculpture seemed to dance with the wind, a testament to the artist's ability to capture the essence of movement. It was a reminder that art is not static; it's alive and ever-changing.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to do a little shopping at the Lee Ufan Museum shop. I didn't buy anything extravagant, just a few postcards and a small book about Lee Ufan's work. It was a nice way to end the day, browsing through art books and soaking up the atmosphere of the museum. I always like to bring back a few souvenirs to remind me of my travels.

For dinner, I ventured to Ishii Shouten, an udon noodle shop. I had heard great things about their handmade udon noodles, and I wasn't disappointed. The noodles were thick and chewy, and the broth was flavorful. It was a simple but satisfying meal. The restaurant had a homely atmosphere, making me feel like I was dining in someone's kitchen. It was a great way to experience the local cuisine. I felt a sense of connection to the island and its people. It was a reminder that food is not just about sustenance; it's about culture, community, and connection.

As I walked back to my accommodation, I reflected on the day's experiences. I had seen so much art, experienced so many emotions, and tasted so many delicious foods. Naoshima is truly a special place, a haven for art lovers and anyone seeking inspiration. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique island. It's a place that will stay with me long after I leave.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Art House Project: Kadoya, Naoshima Fishing Park, and Danyama. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me on this enchanting island. I might even treat myself to a drink at Ebisukamo in the evening. Good night from Naoshima!

Naoshima continues to inspire and challenge my perceptions. Each day brings new discoveries and a deeper appreciation for the power of art. It's a journey I'm so grateful to be on, a solo adventure that is enriching my soul and expanding my horizons.
