Beneath Ancient Reefs and Crocodile Smiles

Today was a day of incredible contrasts, a journey through time and terrain that left Astrid, Lasse, and me utterly captivated. From towering gorge walls teeming with life to the echoing depths of a subterranean tunnel, the Kimberley has once again exceeded all expectations. It's moments like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of Silkeborg for the unpredictable allure of the open road.

Our day began early, fuelled by a hearty breakfast at our campsite near the Bungle Bungles [cite: null]. The air was already warm, promising another scorcher as we packed up and set off towards Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park. The drive itself was an experience, the landscape transforming from the familiar beehive domes to the rugged beauty of the Napier Range. It's hard to believe that this ancient mountain range was once a coral reef, thriving beneath the ocean waves millions of years ago.

Arriving at Windjana Gorge, we were immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The towering limestone walls, carved by the Lennard River over centuries, rose dramatically from the floodplain. The park is open during the dry season, which made access easy. As we strolled along the Gorge Walk Trail, a relatively easy 3.5-kilometer path, the air was filled with the sounds of the Kimberley. Noisy corellas screeched overhead, while the rustling of leaves hinted at the presence of other creatures.

It wasn't long before we spotted our first freshwater crocodile, basking lazily in the sun on a sandy bank. These ancient reptiles, seemingly unfazed by our presence, are a true symbol of the Kimberley. Lasse, initially a bit apprehensive, was soon captivated, snapping photos with his camera. Astrid, ever the observant librarian, pointed out the fossilized marine life embedded in the gorge walls, a tangible link to the region's prehistoric past.

The Kimberley is a place where time seems to stand still, where ancient landscapes and timeless creatures coexist in a symphony of natural wonder.

Refueled, we continued our journey towards Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park, another gem within the Napier Range.

The drive to Tunnel Creek was an adventure in itself, requiring a sturdy 4WD to navigate the unsealed roads. The anticipation grew with every kilometer, the landscape becoming increasingly dramatic. Finally, we arrived at the entrance to the tunnel, a dark and mysterious opening in the rock face.

Before venturing into the depths, we made sure to heed the warnings and prepare accordingly. Armed with torches and wearing sturdy shoes, we stepped into the cool, damp darkness. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the echoes of dripping water.

As we ventured deeper into the 750-meter-long tunnel, carved by Tunnel Creek over millions of years, the outside world faded away. The beam of our torches danced across the walls, revealing stunning stalactites and stalagmites, formations sculpted by time and water. We waded through pools of cool water, sometimes reaching knee-height, the darkness amplifying the sense of adventure.

About halfway through the tunnel, the roof had collapsed, allowing a stream of sunlight to pierce the darkness. It was a breathtaking sight, a cathedral of light and shadow that highlighted the natural beauty of the cave. We paused for a moment, taking in the scene and marveling at the forces of nature that had created this subterranean wonder.

Emerging on the other side of the tunnel, we were greeted by a lush oasis, a hidden world teeming with life. Bats fluttered overhead, while the sound of running water filled the air. We took a moment to rest and reflect, feeling a sense of accomplishment and awe at having traversed this incredible natural wonder.

The Bunuba people are the traditional owners of this land, and Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) holds great cultural significance. It was once used as a hideout by the Aboriginal leader Jandamarra, who fought against European settlers in the late 19th century. Standing in this place, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past, a reminder of the rich and complex history of this region.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge for a well-deserved dinner [cite: null].

Over a delicious meal, we recounted the day's adventures, sharing stories and laughter. Lasse, inspired by our journey, even started sketching some of the landscapes we had seen [cite: null].

Before retiring for the night, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The Kimberley has a way of stripping away the superficial and revealing the raw beauty of the natural world. It's a place that challenges you, inspires you, and leaves you with a profound sense of wonder. Even though the national parks are preparing to shut down for the wet season, I am grateful we got to experience them before the closure.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Lake Argyle and Ivanhoe Crossing, another chapter in our Kimberley adventure [cite: null]. I am sure Astrid will want to visit the shop at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge as well [cite: null]. I can't wait to see what wonders await us.

The Kimberley is under the hot Australian sun and the weather has been consistently between 62°F and 87°F. It is important to remember to drink water and to stay in the shade when possible. I did forget to pack a portable phone charger and binoculars. I will make sure to pack those next time.

Goodnight from the Kimberley!
