Explore Mirima National Park's stunning rock formations and indulge in the Kimberley's culinary delights on a family adventure in Australia.
Echoes of Ancient Seas: A Day Among the Mini Bungles
The Kimberley has a way of seeping into your soul, doesn't it? It's a landscape that whispers stories of ancient times, of indigenous heritage, and of raw, untamed beauty. Today, our family ventured into Mirima National Park, often called the 'Mini Bungle Bungles,' and the experience left us humbled and in awe. It was a day filled with geological wonders and a deeper appreciation for the land's cultural significance.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the air, a comforting start to a day of exploration. Astrid, as always, was keen to get an early start, eager to capture the morning light on the rock formations. Lasse, still a teenager at heart, grumbled good-naturedly but perked up at the sight of the buffet. I, myself, was simply happy to be surrounded by my family in this extraordinary place. We had planned to be at Mirima National Park as soon as possible, to experience the best light for photographs, and avoid the worst heat of the day.
Driving towards Mirima National Park, I couldn't help but reflect on our journey so far. Leaving my workshop in Silkeborg behind, even just for a couple of weeks, always feels a little strange, but the promise of adventure with my family always outweighs the pang of missing my familiar surroundings. This trip to the Bungle Bungle Range is exactly the kind of immersive experience we crave, a chance to connect with nature and each other, far removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Mirima National Park, just a stone's throw from Kununurra, greeted us with its mesmerizing rock formations. Often called the 'Mini Bungle Bungles', the park boasts ancient sandstone structures sculpted over millions of years. As we walked along the trails, I was struck by the sheer artistry of nature. The changing light of the day painted the rocks in hues of orange, red, and purple, creating a spectacle that felt both surreal and deeply grounding.
To walk in Mirima is to step back in time, to feel the echoes of ancient seas and the presence of those who came before us.
We chose the Gerliwany-gerring Banan Trail, a path that wound through narrow gorges and offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Astrid, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the delicate layer of algae and lichens protecting the sandstone from weathering. Lasse, surprisingly engaged, peppered me with questions about the geological processes that shaped these formations. I did my best to explain, drawing on my limited knowledge and supplementing it with information from our guidebook. I must remember to pack my binoculars tomorrow!
It was impossible not to feel the cultural significance of Mirima. For thousands of years, the Miriwoong people have called this place home, seeking shelter in the rocks and using the land's resources for sustenance and medicine. We paused at several points to admire ancient rock paintings and engravings, imagining the stories they held. It was a humbling reminder of the deep connection between people and place.
After our morning hike, we drove back towards the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company for lunch. The casual atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed midday meal. Astrid and Lasse enjoyed some burgers, while I opted for a lighter salad. The Caravan Park also functions as a shop, so we took the opportunity to stock up on a few essentials, including that portable phone charger I had forgotten!

In the afternoon, we decided to revisit some of the park’s shorter trails, including the Looking at Plants Nature Trail, a loop that included a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk. It was an easy, informative walk, and we learned about the various plant species used by the local Aboriginal people. We also kept our eyes peeled for wildlife, managing to spot a few wallabies and several colourful bird species. Astrid was particularly thrilled to see a pair of crimson finches flitting through the trees.
As evening approached, we made our way to the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park for dinner. The lodge exuded a welcoming atmosphere, and we were quickly seated at a table overlooking the vast landscape. The chef-prepared meal was a delight, featuring fresh, local ingredients infused with native herbs and spices. I savoured every bite, appreciating the culinary delights of the Kimberley.

After dinner, we lingered on the outdoor deck, enjoying the cool evening air and the stunning starlit sky. Lasse, who has recently taken an interest in astronomy, pointed out the constellations, sharing facts he had learned from his books. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with wonder and discovery.
Tomorrow, our adventure continues as we head to Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park and Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park. I've heard tales of dramatic gorges and hidden caves, and I'm eager to explore these natural wonders with my family. We plan to have breakfast at The Bungle Bungles, and perhaps enjoy a drink at the Bungle Bungle Guided Tours | Kimberley Air and Walking Tours bar in the evening, if time permits. As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. The Kimberley has captured my heart, and I know this is just the beginning of our exploration of this extraordinary region.
The events calendar in Kununurra lists the Kununurra Christmas Markets for the end of the month, and I am hoping we will be able to extend our stay to experience a local Christmas celebration.
