Echoes of the Past

Today, Matera revealed more of its captivating soul. From exploring ancient museums to savoring local flavors, each experience felt like stepping back in time. It’s a Sunday I won't soon forget, filled with history, art, and the simple joy of sharing it all with my family.

Our day began, as many do, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Il Terrazzino, a charming spot recommended by our host at Residenza del Monaco Bianco. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee. Astrid and Lasse were particularly excited, having heard about the restaurant's stunning views. As we settled at our table, overlooking the Sassi, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The spread was delightful – a mix of sweet pastries, local cheeses, and cured meats. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

First on our itinerary was the MUdeSCA - Museo dello Scavo Matera. This museum, dedicated to the art of excavation, offered a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region. As a restorer of antique furniture, I've always been drawn to the stories objects can tell. The museum was located near Sasso Barisano, housed in a location that evoked the past, and showcased the rich environments that evoked past eras. Here, the artifacts unearthed from the area were meticulously displayed, each one whispering tales of the people who once called Matera home. Lasse, surprisingly, was engrossed, asking questions about the tools and techniques used by archaeologists. It was a proud moment, seeing him connect with history in such a tangible way.

After the museum, we made our way to the Chiesa di Santa Lucia alle Malve. This rock-hewn church, dating back to the 8th century, is the first female monastic settlement of the Benedictine Order and is the most important in the city of Matera. As we approached, the exterior, carved directly into the cliff face, was striking. Inside, the church was a testament to centuries of devotion. Despite the passage of time and the upheavals it had undergone, it retained signs that allowed us to reconstruct its planimetric and architectural development. The frescoes, though faded, still conveyed a sense of profound spirituality. Astrid, with her librarian's eye for detail, pointed out the subtle nuances in the artwork, explaining the stories behind each depiction. The church was initially dedicated to Saint Agatha but was renamed after being entrusted to the Benedictine order dedicated to Saint Lucy. I found myself particularly moved by the image of the Madonna, a symbol of resilience and hope. It was a reminder of the enduring power of faith, even in the face of adversity.

History is not merely something to be read. It is something to be felt, experienced, and understood through the echoes of the past that resonate in the present.

For lunch, we had reserved a table at Osteria MateraMì. This restaurant, nestled in the heart of Matera, promised an authentic taste of Southern Italian cuisine. We chose this place for its traditional cuisine and warm atmosphere, and it did not disappoint. The staff welcomed us with open arms, guiding us through the menu with genuine enthusiasm. We started with the mashed bean appetizer, followed by the black chickpea pasta, a local specialty. The flavors were bold and rustic, each ingredient bursting with freshness. Astrid particularly enjoyed the lamb stew, while Lasse devoured the codfish pasta. As we ate, we savored not only the food but also the sense of connection – to the land, to the people, and to each other. It was a meal that nourished both body and soul.

In the afternoon, our curiosity led us to the MOOM / Matera Olive Oil Museum. Housed in an ancient olive mill carved into the rock, the museum offered a fascinating insight into the region's olive oil production. I was intrigued by the traditional methods, the donkey-powered mills, and the subterranean vaults where the oil was stored. The structure probably dates back to XV-XVI century. The museum visit included a guided tour and an audioguide. We learned about the different stages of olive oil production, from the olive storage to the oil catch basins. It was a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Matera people. At the end of the tour, we were treated to a tasting of the museum's own olive oil. The flavor was rich and complex, a testament to the quality of the olives and the care taken in their production. I purchased a bottle to take home, a reminder of our time in Matera.

As evening approached, we decided to unwind at Cream Irish Pub Guinness. While it might seem out of place in the heart of Italy, the pub offered a welcome respite from the day's activities. I enjoyed a pint of Guinness, while Astrid savored a glass of local wine. Lasse, ever the teenager, opted for a soda. The pub was lively and welcoming, a mix of locals and tourists. It was a chance to relax, reflect on the day, and simply enjoy each other's company.

For dinner, we decided to try Ego. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we discovered that Ego was permanently closed. Disappointed, we walked around the city center and found a cozy little restaurant called Stano. The restaurant was located at the entrance of Sasso Barisano, and offered a rustic-chic venue with artfully plated Italian regional classics using high-quality local ingredients. The menu featured Matera's culinary repertoire, including dishes like cialledda calda, cavatelli with peperone crusco, and roast lamb with potatoes. We had a wonderful meal, enjoying the local cuisine and the friendly atmosphere. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you least expect.

As we walked back to our accommodation, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The Sassi, with their ancient stones and mysterious shadows, seemed to whisper secrets of the past. I held Astrid's hand, feeling a sense of gratitude for this journey, for the chance to share it with my family, and for the memories we were creating together. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Casa Cava, Via Madonna delle Virtù, and Belvedere Murgia Timone. I am eager to see what new wonders Matera holds in store.

Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures. Matera, with its ancient stones and captivating stories, had truly captured our hearts. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the past, experiencing the present, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I closed my eyes, I knew that this journey, this exploration of Matera with my family, would be a chapter we would cherish forever.
