Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of delving deep into the historical heart of Matera. I wanted to experience the city not just as a tourist, but as someone connecting with its ancient soul. From exploring the rugged landscapes of Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana to wandering through the cave churches and artisan workshops, Matera revealed more of its timeless beauty to me. Astrid and Lasse were just as eager as I was to soak in the atmosphere, and their enthusiasm made the day even more special.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Nicchia nel Sasso Osteria Contemporanea. The reviews I'd read online praised its contemporary take on Lucanian cuisine, and it certainly didn't disappoint. It was a delightful, family-run place with a warm atmosphere. The owner, along with her chef husband and two children, were incredibly welcoming. We all enjoyed the delicious food while enjoying a spectacular view of the Sassi. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Astrid particularly enjoyed the fresh pastries, while Lasse was fascinated by the restaurant's location carved into the rock.

With our stomachs full, we set off for the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana. The park offered a stunning panoramic view of the Sassi, and I couldn't resist taking out my camera to capture the breathtaking scenery. The park is a protected area, and you can feel the history seeping from the very stones beneath your feet. It's incredible to think that people have been living in these caves for thousands of years. As we hiked along the trails, Lasse, ever the curious one, peppered me with questions about the park's geology and history. I did my best to answer, drawing on my love for history and the travel guidebook I'd brought along. We even spotted a few of the park's famed birds of prey soaring overhead. I was hoping to spot a *falco grillaio*, the lesser kestrel that is the symbol of the park, but no luck today.

Next on our itinerary was the Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso. This church, unlike many others in the Sassi, isn't dug directly into the tufa rock. Originally built in 1218, it has undergone numerous transformations, particularly in the 17th century when it was renovated in the Baroque style. The facade is quite striking, and the interior, though not as ancient as some of the other cave churches, is filled with beautiful details. I found myself contemplating the layers of history within those walls, each era leaving its mark on the sacred space. Astrid was particularly moved by the serenity of the church, and Lasse, surprisingly, seemed captivated by the architecture. We lit a few candles and took a moment to reflect before heading out.

Lunch was at Ristorante Soul Kitchen - Cucina per l’Anima. The name itself, Soul Kitchen, intrigued me, and the reviews suggested it was a place that focused on fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu was filled with tempting dishes. I opted for a traditional Matera pasta dish, while Astrid tried a flavorful beef dish. Lasse, of course, went for the panna cotta. While the food was good, the service was a bit slow. It seemed they were understaffed. But overall, it was a pleasant experience, and we left feeling satisfied.

Our afternoon was reserved for Casa Noha, a multimedia exhibit that promised to provide a deeper understanding of Matera's history. Housed in a 16th-century family home, Casa Noha takes you on a journey through the city's past with a film projected onto the walls, ceilings, and even the floors. It was a truly immersive experience, and I found myself completely absorbed in the stories of the people who had lived in the Sassi for centuries. The exhibit shed light on the hardships they faced, the ingenuity they displayed, and the resilience that allowed them to survive in such a challenging environment. Astrid and Lasse were equally impressed, and we spent a good hour discussing the exhibit and its implications. It was an emotional experience for all of us, connecting us to the history of Matera on a personal level.

Before dinner, we decided to explore IDEAS - Arts and crafts. I was eager to see the local artisan scene and perhaps find a unique souvenir to bring back home to Silkeborg. The shop was a treasure trove of handmade ceramics, leather goods, and textiles. I was particularly drawn to the *cuccù* whistles, traditional Matera handicrafts that were once given to children on Easter Monday or as a symbol of love. I ended up buying a small ceramic whistle for Lasse, who seemed quite pleased with his new toy. Astrid, meanwhile, found a beautiful hand-woven scarf that she couldn't resist.

For dinner, we chose Baccanti, a restaurant known for its refined Lucanian cuisine and its unique setting in an underground grotto. The atmosphere was enchanting, and the menu was filled with tempting dishes. I started with the caciocavallo flan, a local cheese delicacy, followed by the lamb. Astrid opted for the pork cheeks, while Lasse, ever adventurous, tried the rabbit. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery. The setting truly made the experience unique and unforgettable.

As we walked back to Residenza del Monaco Bianco, I couldn't help but reflect on all that we had seen and experienced today. Matera is a city that stays with you long after you've left. Its ancient stones whisper stories of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring human spirit. I feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to visit MUdeSCA - Museo dello Scavo Matera, Chiesa di Santa Lucia alle Malve, and MOOM / Matera Olive Oil Museum. I am particularly excited about the olive oil museum as I think it will be a great experience for us all.

Back at our accommodation, I took some time to jot down these thoughts. It's important for me to document these experiences, not just for my readers, but also for myself. These are memories I want to cherish for a lifetime. And as I sit here, with the soft glow of the bedside lamp illuminating my notebook, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Matera has captured my heart, and I know that this is just the beginning of our exploration.

I am also happy that I remembered to pack my camera, but I am kicking myself for forgetting the adapter for the Italian power outlets and my sunglasses! I will need to pick them up tomorrow. Good thing there are plenty of shops to explore!

Good night from Matera!
