Exploring the Timeless Beauty of Matera with Family
Day 6: Stepping Back in Time: Matera's Churches and Ancient Caves
Discover Matera's spiritual side with visits to historic churches and explore the ancient cave dwellings that define this unique city.
Echoes of the Past in Matera
Today was a day of delving deeper into Matera's soul, exploring its spiritual heritage and the ancient dwellings that have shaped its unique identity. It's remarkable how much history is packed into this city, and I couldn't wait to share my experiences with you all.
Our day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Pizzeria Van Gogh. Astrid and Lasse were particularly enthusiastic about the pizza, while I enjoyed a simple cornetto and cappuccino. It's become a tradition for us to start our mornings with a taste of local flavor, setting the tone for the day's adventures.
With renewed energy, we set off to explore the Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi. The church stands proudly in Piazza San Francesco, its Baroque facade a testament to the city's layered history. I was immediately struck by the statues adorning the facade – the Immaculate Virgin Mary flanked by Saint Francis and Saint Anthony. It's a beautiful sight, especially under the clear June sky.

Stepping inside, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The interior, with its single nave and side chapels, is adorned with intricate decorations and paintings. I learned that the church was built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier hypogean church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. You can still access this ancient church through a trapdoor in one of the chapels, which I found particularly fascinating.
“Matera is a place where the past is not just remembered, but lived and breathed in every stone and every corner.”
As a restorer of antique furniture, I couldn't help but appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry that went into every detail of the church. The high altar, the wooden ceiling, and the side chapels each told a story of faith and dedication. Lasse, surprisingly, seemed quite engaged, perhaps drawn in by the sheer age and grandeur of the place. Astrid, ever the historian, was busy reading up on the church's history in our travel guidebook.
Leaving the Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi, we made our way to Palazzo del Casale. This noble palace, once belonging to the Malvini Malvezzi family from Bologna, now stands as a testament to Matera's rich aristocratic past. The architecture is stunning, a blend of different styles reflecting the various periods of its existence. I was particularly impressed by the meticulous restoration work that has been carried out to preserve its historical integrity.

Wandering through its halls, I could almost imagine the lives of the families who once resided here, the grand balls and important decisions that took place within these walls. It's these glimpses into the past that make traveling so rewarding for me. It connects me to a broader human story, reminding me that we are all part of a long and complex narrative.
For lunch, we decided to try Ristorante Burro Salato - Cucina Francese e Lucana a Matera. The name itself intrigued me, promising a fusion of French and local Lucanian cuisine. The restaurant didn't disappoint. I opted for a dish that combined local ingredients with a French twist – a delightful experience that perfectly captured the spirit of Matera itself. Astrid enjoyed a traditional Lucanian pasta dish, while Lasse, ever adventurous, tried a French-inspired crepe.

After lunch, we ventured into the Cave di Matera. These ancient cave dwellings are the heart and soul of Matera, a testament to human ingenuity and resilience. Walking through the Sassi, I was struck by the sheer scale of the settlement, the way the houses are built into the rock, one on top of the other, creating a labyrinthine network of streets and alleys. It's like stepping back in time, imagining what life must have been like for the families who lived here for centuries.

I explained to Lasse how these caves were inhabited from the Paleolithic era until the mid-20th century. It was a history of poverty and hardship, but also of community and survival. Carlo Levi's book, *Christ Stopped at Eboli*, brought the plight of the Sassi to the world's attention, leading to the relocation of its inhabitants to more modern housing.
However, the Sassi were not abandoned. They have been revitalized, transformed into homes, hotels, restaurants, and shops, preserving their historical character while adapting to modern needs. It's a remarkable example of urban regeneration, a testament to the power of human creativity and determination.
As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves at Clint Urban Kitchen for a refreshing drink. It's a modern bar with a relaxed atmosphere, a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. Lasse was thrilled to find they had a selection of local craft beers, while Astrid and I enjoyed a glass of Italian wine. We sat outside, soaking in the atmosphere of Matera as the sun began to set.

Dinner was at Le Bubbole, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, the food exquisite. I savored every bite of the traditional Materan dishes, each one a testament to the region's culinary heritage. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and friendly. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Crypt of Original Sin and the Church of Saint Mary of Idris, delving further into Matera's religious history. We'll also visit the Chiesa Rupestre di Madonna delle Tre Porte, another example of the rock-cut churches that dot the landscape. And, of course, we'll make sure to stop by a local gift shop to pick up some souvenirs for our friends back home in Silkeborg.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable city with my family. Matera is a place that stays with you, its beauty and history etched into your memory long after you've left. It's a place that reminds me of the importance of preserving our heritage, of honoring the stories of those who came before us. And it's a place that I know I will never forget.
