A Journey Through Alentejo's Soul

Today was a day of delving deep into the heart of Alentejo, a region where the past and present intertwine seamlessly, and where the spirit of craftsmanship still thrives. Astrid, Lasse, and I set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to uncover the hidden gems that this part of Portugal had to offer. Little did we know that we would be stepping back in time, surrounded by artistry and history at every turn.

Our first stop was the Centro de Artes Tradicionais in Évora. It felt fitting to start our day immersed in the local artistry. As a furniture restorer, I always appreciate seeing how different cultures express themselves through their crafts. The Centro was a treasure trove of Alentejan artistry, displaying a wide array of traditional crafts from the Évora district. From intricate pottery to delicate textiles, each piece told a story of generations past. Astrid was particularly captivated by the vibrant colors and patterns in the woven rugs, while Lasse, surprisingly, showed interest in the detailed woodwork. I found myself drawn to the techniques used in creating the pieces, recognizing the same dedication and patience required in my own craft. I was reminded of my early days in Arezzo, learning the art of restoration from my father, and how the touch of a craftsman can breathe new life into something old. It's a universal language that transcends time and borders. The museum was once the Museu de Artesanato, located in the old Real Celeiro Comum.

Next, we drove to Arraiolos, a town famous for its unique circular castle. The Castle of Arraiolos, also known as Paço dos Alcaides, has a Romano-Gothic design and was built in the 14th century on top of Monte de S. Pedro. The views from the top were breathtaking, overlooking the white houses of the village and the rolling Alentejo landscape. What struck me most was the castle's circular architecture, a rarity that sets it apart from other medieval fortresses. As we walked along the ancient walls, I imagined the soldiers who once stood guard, protecting the town from invaders. It's fascinating to think that King Dinis ordered the construction of this castle in 1305, and even lived here for a while. The castle's history is long and rich, with evidence of human presence in the region dating back to the Neolithic era. Despite its age, the castle's structure is still impressive, a testament to the skill and ingenuity of its builders. I found myself pondering the parallels between preserving a historical building and restoring a piece of furniture—both require a delicate balance of honoring the past while ensuring its survival for the future. The castle was built between 1306 and 1310 and consisted of an elliptical wall with two gates that circle a church. The castle began to be abandoned in the 14th century because it was unpleasant to live in due to its windy and cold location.

After exploring the castle, we stopped for lunch at Tragos E Condutos in Évora. It was a delightful experience, savoring traditional Portuguese flavors in a cozy setting. Astrid and I shared a bottle of local wine, while Lasse enjoyed a hearty meal of grilled meats. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. It was a perfect way to recharge before our next adventure.

Our final destination for the day was the Museu do Barro in Redondo, a place dedicated to the traditional pottery of the region. Redondo has a rich history of pottery production, dating back over 500 years. The museum showcased the evolution of ceramics from prehistoric times to the present day, with exhibits detailing the techniques and styles unique to Redondo. As someone who appreciates the artistry and skill involved in working with one's hands, I was thoroughly impressed by the craftsmanship on display. Lasse even tried his hand at the pottery wheel, with mixed results, but he certainly gained a new appreciation for the art. It's inspiring to see traditions like this being preserved, and I hope that future generations will continue to carry on the legacy of Redondo's potters. We learned that visitors can tour the nine potteries in the area and experience the work for themselves.

Before heading back to Évora, we made a pit stop at Pub Molhóbico. The pub has a friendly and informal atmosphere, reminiscent of an Irish pub. We enjoyed some drinks and snacks, and I even struck up a conversation with a local artisan who shared stories about the town's history and traditions. It's these kinds of interactions that make traveling so rewarding, connecting with people and learning about their lives and experiences. The pub is known as the home of the parties.

As we drove back to the hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had journeyed through time and tradition, exploring ancient castles, admiring exquisite crafts, and connecting with the local culture. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage, and of the power of human creativity to shape our world. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Castle of Evoramonte and the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro, continuing our exploration of Alentejo's rich history. I'm also looking forward to trying out A Bruxa D'Évora for lunch, and TascaTosca & Wine Restaurant for dinner. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at Avista Bar. I'm eager to see what new adventures await us.
