Whispers of the Past, Threads of the Future

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the heart of Évora's historical grandeur to the charming, textile-rich town of Arraiolos. It's fascinating how each place holds its own unique story, woven into the very fabric of its existence. As a restorer of antique furniture, I'm always drawn to the tangible connection to the past, and today was filled with moments that allowed me to appreciate the artistry and history of this region.

Our day began, as it often does, with a delightful breakfast at the Mar De AR Aqueduto Hotel. It's becoming quite the ritual, and Lasse, in particular, enjoys the pastries they offer. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the wonders that Évora had in store for us.

First on our list was the Giraldo Square Fountain. It's difficult to miss, really, as it is located at Giraldo Square. As we approached Giraldo Square, I was struck by its lively atmosphere. The fountain itself is a beautiful centerpiece, and Astrid pointed out the intricate details in its design. We sat for a while, just soaking in the ambiance. I couldn't help but imagine all the people who had gathered in this square over the centuries, sharing stories and experiences, much like we were doing at that moment. It’s amazing how certain places can act as a time capsule, preserving the echoes of generations past. I tried to picture what the square would have looked like in different eras, from Roman times to the medieval period. Lasse, of course, was more interested in finding a good spot for people-watching, while Astrid enjoyed capturing the scene with her camera. There was no particular event happening at the square today, but it was still a vibrant and bustling place.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives.

Next, we ventured towards the Chapel of Saint Blaise. Located a bit outside the city walls, the Chapel of Saint Blaise presented a stark contrast to the bustling square. It's an extraordinary building, almost castle-like in appearance, which I later learned was built in the 15th century to give thanks for the end of a plague epidemic. The mix of Manueline and Mudéjar architectural styles was fascinating, a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped Portugal's history. Unfortunately, the chapel wasn't open for visitors at the time we arrived, but we were able to admire its exterior and wander through the peaceful garden surrounding it. The architecture was indeed unusual, almost like something out of a fairy tale, as one review I had read suggested. The peaceful, wild garden provided a serene atmosphere, and we spent some time simply enjoying the tranquility.

After a morning filled with historical exploration, our appetites were calling, and we headed to Botequim da Mouraria for lunch. This cozy spot offered a taste of authentic Portuguese cuisine, and we savored every bite. I opted for a traditional dish of pork with clams, while Astrid enjoyed a fresh seafood stew. Lasse, ever the adventurous eater, tried a local sausage that packed quite a punch. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we embarked on a drive to Arraiolos, a town renowned for its carpets. As someone who appreciates the artistry and craftsmanship of antique furniture, I was particularly excited to delve into the world of Arraiolos carpets. The drive itself was scenic, with rolling hills and picturesque landscapes that reminded me of the Tuscan countryside back in Italy. It was a pleasant change of pace from the urban environment of Évora, and we enjoyed the opportunity to soak in the natural beauty of the Alentejo region.

Upon arriving in Arraiolos, our first stop was the Interpretive Center of Arraiolos Carpet. This museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and artistry of these unique textiles. I was immediately captivated by the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the carpets on display. The center provided a comprehensive overview of the carpet-making process, from the selection of materials to the weaving techniques passed down through generations. As we wandered through the exhibits, I couldn't help but draw parallels between the restoration of antique furniture and the creation of Arraiolos carpets. Both require a deep understanding of materials, techniques, and historical context. I was particularly fascinated by the symbolism behind the various patterns and motifs used in the carpets. Each design tells a story, reflecting the cultural and historical influences that have shaped the region. Lasse, surprisingly, showed a keen interest in the weaving process, asking questions about the tools and techniques used by the artisans. Astrid, of course, was drawn to the colors and patterns, imagining how these carpets could be incorporated into our home decor. We learned about the history, origins, and influences of the Arraiolos Carpet, its artisanal production process, its techniques and materials, as well as its artistic evolution, material and technique. I was particularly impressed by the dedication and skill of the local artisans who continue to create these masterpieces using traditional methods. Their passion for their craft was evident, and I felt a deep sense of respect for their commitment to preserving this cultural heritage. It reminded me of my own work in restoring antique furniture, where I strive to honor the craftsmanship of the past while bringing these pieces back to life for future generations. The Interpretive Center is a permanent museum space at the service of the community, whose mission is to promote the study and dissemination of the Arraiolos Carpet, as well as its conservation, protection, enhancement and recognition as historical, artistic and cultural heritage.

Before leaving Arraiolos, we stopped by D'Évora for you Artesanato, Gourmet e Vinhos, a shop offering a variety of local crafts, gourmet products, and wines. We picked up a few souvenirs to remind us of our visit, including a small Arraiolos carpet to hang in our living room. It will serve as a constant reminder of the beauty and artistry we experienced in this charming town.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Évora, where we had dinner at Alegrias e Vinho Tinto Botequim. This cozy restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, and we enjoyed a delicious meal accompanied by local wine. We shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about the day's adventures and savoring the flavors of Portugal. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so special.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the local crafts with a visit to the Centro de Artes Tradicionais and explore the Castle of Arraiolos itself. We’re also hoping to visit the Museu do Barro de Redondo. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing more of the traditional arts and perhaps finding some inspiration for my own woodworking projects. To cap off the day, we might visit the Pub Molhóbico for a nightcap.

Today was a reminder of how much history and culture is embedded in the Alentejo region. From the ancient squares of Évora to the artistic traditions of Arraiolos, every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered. And as I continue to explore this beautiful country with my family, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with the world around me.
