Today was a day of wandering off the beaten path in Assisi, seeking out the quieter corners and lesser-known stories that this ancient town holds. It’s easy to get caught up in the grandeur of the Basilica, but I wanted to delve deeper, to find the hidden gems that whisper tales of centuries past. Astrid and Lasse were, as always, enthusiastic to join me, and together we set out to explore.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Trattoria Da Erminio. I opted for a simple but satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect start to a day of exploration.

With renewed energy, we headed first to the Portico of Monte Frumentario. This building, once a hospital, now stands as a striking example of medieval architecture. After lunch, we ventured towards the Rocca Minore. The walk up to the fortress was a bit of a climb, but the views from the top were well worth the effort. Though it's currently closed for restoration, we were still able to appreciate its imposing presence and imagine what life must have been like within its walls. As I looked out over the valley, I felt a connection to the generations of people who had stood guard here, protecting their city from invaders. The scar on my cheek, a memento from a childhood football match, seemed insignificant in comparison to the battles fought on this very ground.

Lasse, ever the adventurous eater, tried the strangozzi with truffle. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a memorable meal, a fitting end to a day of exploration.

I’m particularly excited about Mount Subasio; a bit of hiking will do us all good after days of wandering the streets of Assisi. I'm sure there will be more discoveries to be made, more stories to be uncovered. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, a day of wandering off the beaten path and finding the hidden gems of Assisi.
