Day 4: A Day of Discovery: Unveiling Assisi's Hidden Gems
Explore Assisi's lesser-known treasures: from ancient porticoes to stunning piazzas, and medieval fortresses, a day of cultural immersion.
Unveiling Assisi's Secrets
Today was a day of wandering off the beaten path in Assisi, seeking out the quieter corners and lesser-known stories that this ancient town holds. It’s easy to get caught up in the grandeur of the Basilica, but I wanted to delve deeper, to find the hidden gems that whisper tales of centuries past. Astrid and Lasse were, as always, enthusiastic to join me, and together we set out to explore.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Trattoria Da Erminio. I opted for a simple but satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect start to a day of exploration.
With renewed energy, we headed first to the Portico of Monte Frumentario. This building, once a hospital, now stands as a striking example of medieval architecture. The elegant portico, with its seven arches and intricately carved capitals, offered a moment of quiet contemplation before we plunged back into the bustling streets. I couldn't help but think of the countless people who had passed through this portico over the centuries, each with their own stories and burdens. It was a humbling experience, connecting with the past in such a tangible way.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history whispers.
Next on our list was the Piazza inferiore di San Francesco. This lower square, located next to the Basilica, provides a stunning view of the Basilica inferiore and the Sacro Convento. The square's history is rich, dating back to the 14th century when it was designed to regulate the influx of merchants. The porticoes surrounding the square, rebuilt in the 15th century, once housed small businesses and offered respite to pilgrims. Today, it's a place of gathering and reflection, its stones worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. As we stood there, taking in the view, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The square seemed to breathe with history, its stories etched into every stone.

For lunch, we decided to try Hostaria Terra Chiama. The restaurant is known for its authentic Umbrian cuisine and use of local ingredients. I sampled the black truffle pasta which was something of a dream, while Astrid enjoyed a pork cheek and tomato pasta. Lasse, of course, opted for a simple pizza. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of Umbria.

After lunch, we ventured towards the Rocca Minore. The walk up to the fortress was a bit of a climb, but the views from the top were well worth the effort. The Rocca Minore, also known as the Rocchicciola, was built in the 14th century to defend Assisi from attacks coming from Mount Subasio. Though it's currently closed for restoration, we were still able to appreciate its imposing presence and imagine what life must have been like within its walls. As I looked out over the valley, I felt a connection to the generations of people who had stood guard here, protecting their city from invaders. The scar on my cheek, a memento from a childhood football match, seemed insignificant in comparison to the battles fought on this very ground.

In the late afternoon, we stopped for a coffee at Caffè Duomo ASSISI. The café is located near the Duomo di San Rufino and offers a lovely place to relax and take in the surroundings. I enjoyed a strong espresso while Astrid and Lasse indulged in some gelato. It was the perfect way to recharge before our final activity of the day.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante Medioevo Assisi. As the name suggests, the restaurant has a medieval theme, with stone walls and vaulted ceilings. The menu features traditional Umbrian dishes with a modern twist. I ordered the citrus pig, which was absolutely delicious, while Astrid enjoyed the tagliatelle with mixed mushrooms. Lasse, ever the adventurous eater, tried the strangozzi with truffle. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a memorable meal, a fitting end to a day of exploration.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the beauty and history we had encountered. Assisi is more than just a pilgrimage site; it's a living, breathing town with stories to tell. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, where the grand and the humble coexist in harmony. I am reminded of the Calendimaggio festival which took place here just days ago, a medieval-themed celebration of spring. It's clear that Assisi knows how to honor its rich history.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Museo di San Francesco e cripta di San Vittorino, the Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani, and Mount Subasio. I’m particularly excited about Mount Subasio; a bit of hiking will do us all good after days of wandering the streets of Assisi. I'm sure there will be more discoveries to be made, more stories to be uncovered. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, a day of wandering off the beaten path and finding the hidden gems of Assisi.
Back at Hotel Il Duomo, I found myself thinking about the universal power adapter and raincoat I had forgotten to pack. Astrid chuckled, reminding me that even the most seasoned travelers have their moments of forgetfulness. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, to create memories that will last a lifetime. After all, isn't that what travel is all about?
