Whispers of the Past in Assisi

Today marked the beginning of our family's journey into the heart of Assisi, a town steeped in history and spirituality. From the moment we arrived, I felt a sense of stepping back in time, eager to explore the stories etched into its ancient stones. The air was filled with the promise of discovery, and I couldn't wait to share it all with Astrid and Lasse.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Terrazze di Properzio. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering not only delicious food but also a breathtaking view of the Umbrian landscape. The terrace was a perfect spot to gather our thoughts before diving into the day's adventures. I enjoyed a cappuccino, while Astrid and Lasse opted for some pastries. The staff was incredibly helpful, especially with suggesting vegetarian options for Astrid, as many dishes included meat. Fueled up and ready, we set off to explore the wonders of Assisi.

Our first stop was the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis. As a furniture restorer, I've always been drawn to the craftsmanship of the past, and this basilica was a masterpiece of medieval art and architecture. The Basilica is one of the most important places of worship in Italy and the world. Founded in 1228, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of St. Francis. The basilica is composed of two churches, the Upper Church and the Lower Church, and a crypt where the remains of St. Francis are interred. The interior of the Upper Church showcases early Gothic style in Italy. Inside, the frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue transported us to another era, depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis with vivid detail. Lasse, who usually isn't too interested in historical sites, was captivated by the artistry and the stories behind each painting. Astrid, ever the librarian, admired the basilica's importance to the papacy and its role in strengthening ties with the humbler classes. I found myself particularly moved by the serene atmosphere of the Lower Basilica, where St. Francis's tomb lies. The weight of history and faith in that space was palpable. It was amazing to consider that the basilica was built on what was once known as the Hill of Hell, a place where death sentences were carried out. The transformation of this site into a place of reverence is a powerful symbol of St. Francis's message of redemption.

To restore is to give new life, to see the beauty that time has tried to erase.

Leaving the basilica, we strolled through the charming streets of Assisi towards Piazza del Comune. The heart of Assisi, this central square is surrounded by historical buildings that narrate the city's rich past. The Temple of Minerva, with its well-preserved Roman facade, stood proudly alongside medieval buildings. It was fascinating to imagine the square as the center of Roman life in ancient Asisium. I tried to picture what it must have been like centuries ago. We paused for a moment by the central fountain, taking in the sights and sounds of modern Assisi. The blend of ancient and contemporary life was striking. We took some photos, capturing the essence of this beautiful square, before deciding to have lunch.

For lunch, we chose Trattoria Pallotta Assisi, a restaurant known for its authentic Umbrian cuisine. The restaurant is family-run and the atmosphere felt warm and inviting. We shared a variety of local dishes, including strangozzi alla Pallotta and zuppa di fagiolina. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of Umbria. Lasse particularly enjoyed the strangozzi with truffles, while Astrid savored the zuppa di fagiolina. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was a perfect midday break, recharging us for the afternoon's adventures.

After lunch, we made our way to Rocca Maggiore, the imposing fortress that dominates Assisi's skyline. The climb was a bit steep, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. The fortress has a long history, dating back to the 12th century. It was built by the imperial troops of Frederick Barbarossa. Over the centuries, it has been destroyed and rebuilt, serving as a symbol of power and control. As we explored the castle's walls and towers, I imagined the battles and sieges that had taken place here. Lasse was fascinated by the medieval objects and weapons displayed inside. Astrid appreciated the historical context, explaining the fortress's role in the conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. From the tower, we could see the entire Umbrian valley spread out before us. It was a breathtaking sight, a reminder of the beauty and history that surrounds Assisi.

Before dinner, Astrid wanted to do some shopping, so we stopped by HUMILIS Made in Assisi. Astrid has always had a soft spot for unique jewelry, and this boutique was filled with beautiful handcrafted pieces. The jewelry draws inspiration from Italian culture and craftsmanship. Astrid found a delicate necklace that she loved, a perfect memento of our trip. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful, making the shopping experience a pleasure. I was happy to see Astrid so delighted with her purchase.

As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Ristorante il Vicoletto. The restaurant is located in a charming alley in the historic center of Assisi. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, perfect for a family dinner. We savored traditional Italian dishes, accompanied by local wine. The food was excellent, and the service was attentive. It was a wonderful way to end our first day in Assisi. The Ristorante il Vicoletto is located in a 19th-century building. It is located only 600 meters from the Basilica of San Francesco.

Reflecting on our first day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Assisi had already captured our hearts, and I knew that the days ahead would be filled with even more discoveries. As we headed back to Hotel Il Duomo, we talked about tomorrow's itinerary. We plan to visit the Basilica di Santa Chiara, the Cathedral of San Rufino, and the Eremo delle Carceri. We will also enjoy meals at Nonna Nini, Taverna dei Consoli, and La Locanda del Cardinale. I am also looking forward to visiting Bibenda Assisi Wine Tasting & Gourmet Food, Olive Oil and Chocolate Tastings. The whispers of the past echoed in my mind, promising more stories to uncover. I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

The town is celebrating the arrival of spring. From May 7th to May 10th, Assisi will be celebrating Calendimaggio. This festival celebrates the return of spring and the renewal of life. The town will be immersed in the Middle Ages, with parades, singing, and dancing. I am so happy that we are visiting during this time. I hope we get to experience some of the festivities.
