Today, Assisi opened its heart to us, revealing layers of history and spirituality that resonated deeply within me. As a restorer of antique furniture, I often find myself connecting with the past through tangible objects, but today, the connection was far more profound. It was a day of walking in the footsteps of saints, feeling the echoes of their devotion in the stones of this ancient town. Astrid and Lasse were with me, sharing in this experience, and I could see the impact Assisi was having on them as well.


Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nonna Nini. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of local delicacies filled the air. It was Sunday, and the restaurant buzzed with a gentle energy, families gathering for their morning meal. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of local bread with olive oil and a cappuccino. Lasse, ever the adventurous one, tried a fusion dish that blended Italian and Indian flavors. Astrid enjoyed a traditional pastry, savoring each bite with a smile. Our first stop was the Basilica di Santa Chiara. As we approached the basilica, the stunning view over the Umbrian valley unfolded before us. The facade, with its bands of white and pink stone from Mount Subasio, was striking against the clear blue sky. Inside, the basilica exuded a sense of peace and reverence. We stood in silent contemplation before the crucifix from San Damiano, the very one that spoke to St. Francis, urging him to rebuild the church. It was a powerful moment, connecting us to the origins of the Franciscan order. Astrid was particularly moved by the story of St. Clare, her unwavering dedication to her faith, and her role as the first and most faithful disciple of St. Francis.

Next, we made our way to the Cathedral of San Rufino. The climb up Via San Rufino was steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. Inside, the baptismal font where St. Francis and St. Clare were baptized held a special significance. After immersing ourselves in the town's history, we sought a more secluded experience at the Eremo delle Carceri. A few kilometers outside Assisi, nestled on the slopes of Mount Subasio, lies a sanctuary of peace and contemplation. The name Carceri, meaning prisons, reflects the solitude and penitence sought by St. Francis and his fellow friars in the caves and ravines of the mountain. As we walked the wooded paths, the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. We explored the caves where St. Francis and his companions retreated to pray and meditate, feeling a profound sense of connection to their spiritual journey. Lasse, initially skeptical about visiting another religious site, found himself drawn to the tranquility of the hermitage, commenting on the sense of peace that permeated the air. The Eremo delle Carceri offered a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Assisi, a reminder of the importance of solitude and reflection in a world that often feels too chaotic.

For lunch, we ventured to Taverna dei Consoli. The restaurant offered traditional Umbrian cuisine with a view of the town square. I opted for tagliatelle al ragù, a classic dish that reminded me of my childhood in Arezzo. Astrid chose lasagna, and Lasse, ever the adventurous eater, tried the carbonara. The food was simple yet delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that Umbria is known for. As we ate, we watched the locals going about their day, a glimpse into the rhythm of life in Assisi.

In the late afternoon, before dinner, we decided to indulge in a wine tasting experience at Bibenda Assisi Wine Tasting & Gourmet Food, Olive Oil and Chocolate Tastings. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of local wines drew us in. We sampled a selection of Umbrian wines, each with its unique character and flavor. The sommelier, Nila, shared her passion for the region's wines, guiding us through the nuances of each vintage. We tasted Grechetto, Trebbiano, and Montefalco, each sip a journey through the Umbrian landscape. The experience was enhanced by a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, perfectly paired with the wines. It was a delightful way to end the day, savoring the flavors of Umbria and learning about its rich winemaking tradition.

For our final meal, we dined at La Locanda del Cardinale. The restaurant was located in a historic building, with a glass floor revealing the ruins of a Roman-era house beneath our feet. The food was exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. As we dined, we reflected on the day's experiences, the spiritual journey through Assisi's sacred sites, and the culinary delights we had savored.

As the day drew to a close, and the sun started to set over Assisi, we found ourselves at a vantage point looking over the rolling hills. The air was still and quiet, save for the gentle breeze that rustled through the trees. In that moment, I felt a profound sense of peace and gratitude, a feeling that I knew would stay with me long after we left Assisi.


Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bosco di San Francesco, San Damiano, and Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Rose. I am excited to see what other treasures Assisi holds.


Today was also the final day of the Spring Festival in Assisi. Also, across town at the Teatro Lyrick, Claudio Baglioni was performing. It made for a very lively atmosphere around town.


Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the enduring power of faith and the beauty of simplicity. Assisi is a place where the past comes alive, where the stories of saints and the echoes of history resonate in every stone. It is a place that nourishes the soul and inspires the heart. As we prepare to leave this sacred town, I carry with me a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the simple things in life.
