Solo Adventure on the Choquequirao Trek: Unveiling the Secrets of the Incas
Day 11: Echoes of the Past: Unearthing Ancient Secrets at Huacra Pucara and Pumamarca
Delve into the heart of the Incan empire with a visit to Huacra Pucara and Pumamarca, where history and breathtaking landscapes converge.
Whispers of Ancient Civilizations
Today, the eleventh day of my solo trek through Peru, was a journey back in time. It wasn't just about seeing old stones; it was about feeling the presence of civilizations that shaped this land. I find myself reflecting on the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once called these mountains home. It's a privilege to walk in their footsteps and share these discoveries with you all.
The day began in Cusco, where I enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. Despite its name suggesting a focus on beer, the food was quite good, providing the energy I needed for the day’s explorations.

Afterwards, I made a quick stop at Rummy Outdoor, a shop I had passed by many times. I needed to replace my portable solar charger, which I had foolishly forgotten back in Silkeborg. Astrid would have reminded me, I am sure. Lasse probably would have made fun of me, but he would have secretly been happy to help me find a replacement. It’s these little everyday moments I miss when I'm away from my family. The shop was conveniently located near the Plaza de Armas, and I was able to quickly find a suitable charger, ensuring my camera and journal would stay powered for the remainder of the trip.

With my tech sorted, I set off to explore the day’s main attractions: Huacra Pukara and the Pumamarca Ruins. Each site promised a unique glimpse into Peru’s rich pre-Inca and Inca history. I find myself more and more fascinated by these ancient cultures.
My first destination was Huacra Pukara, also known as Waqrapukara, a site that has recently gained recognition as a significant pre-Inca and Inca archaeological landscape. The name itself, derived from Quechua, translates to "horn fortress," a fitting description for the prominent horn-like rock formations that dominate the area. Reaching Waqrapukara involved a scenic drive through the Peruvian countryside, followed by a moderate hike. The air was crisp, and the views were simply stunning. As I ascended, I could feel the weight of history pressing down on me.

Huacra Pucara stands at an altitude of 4,110 meters above sea level, and as I reached the site, I was immediately struck by the imposing architecture and the breathtaking panoramic views. The site was initially inhabited by the Chelqes and Maskas ethnic groups and later transformed by the Inca ruler Wayna Qhapaq into an astronomical observation center. It is believed that this ceremonial center was dedicated to the god Tecsi Pachacamac Wiraqocha, with offerings made to the sun and moon. The stonework was impressive, a testament to the skill and dedication of the ancient builders. Walking through the structures, I tried to imagine life here centuries ago, the rituals, the daily routines, and the connection to the cosmos.
To truly understand a place, you must not only see it but also feel it, connecting with its history and the stories etched into its very stones.
After spending a few hours exploring Huacra Pukara, soaking in the views, and reflecting on its history, I made my way to the Pumamarca Ruins. This site, located north of Ollantaytambo, is considered one of the first settlements of the Incas before they expanded through the Sacred Valley. Pumamarca, meaning "City of the Pumas," is perched on a steep slope, built to control the entrance to the Sacred Valley.

The archaeological site of Pumamarca showcases a unique blend of Inca and Wari cultures. It is believed that the Wari civilization initially built these ruins before the Incas utilized them, possibly as a ceremonial site. As I hiked towards the ruins, I was rewarded with stunning views of the Patacancha Valley, the landscape stretching out before me in a tapestry of green and brown. The climb was steep, but the panoramic vista from the top was well worth the effort. I could see why the Incas chose this location; it offered a commanding view of the surrounding area, perfect for defense and control.
Pumamarca consists of several architectural components, including qolqas (storage buildings) at the bottom and rectangular enclosures at the top. The site’s strategic location allowed the Incas to oversee the nearby jungle entrance. Wandering through the ruins, I noted the fine stonework and the remnants of plastering mud mortar on some of the structures. It was fascinating to observe the engineering prowess of the Incas and their ability to construct such a complex on such a challenging terrain.
After a day of exploring ancient ruins, I returned to Cusco for a well-deserved dinner. I chose KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, a restaurant praised for its exceptional hospitality and culturally significant ingredients. The reviews I had read highlighted dishes like Lomo de Alpaca and Alpaca burger, and I decided to try the Lomo Saltado. The food was indeed delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure everything was perfect. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with historical exploration and breathtaking scenery.

As I sit here writing in my travel journal, I am struck by the profound sense of connection I feel to this land. Each day brings new discoveries, new insights, and a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Peruvian history and culture. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Chincana Chica and Wakapunku, continuing my exploration of the Choquequirao Trek. I am excited to see what new wonders await me.
Before heading to bed, I decided to check out a local event. Luckily, October 31st is a unique date that blends local traditions with foreign influences. While Halloween has become popular among young people, with costume parties and events in bars and clubs, Día de la Canción Criolla keeps Peru's musical heritage alive. The Plaza de Armas turns into a gathering place where the vibrant colors of costumes mix with tradition, attracting both those who actively participate and those who simply enjoy the festive atmosphere and creativity. It's a night when Cusco showcases its ability to embrace new customs while staying true to its cultural identity.
The combination of ancient history and modern culture makes Cusco a truly unique and captivating destination. Good night from Peru.
Tomorrow, I plan to have breakfast at Choquequirao craft restaurant peruvian cuisine, lunch at Green House, and dinner at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. I also plan to spend some time at Hidden restobar.
Embark on a solo journey through Peru's Choquequirao Trek, exploring Incan history and breathtaking landscapes in a 14-day adventure.
