It was a day filled with cobblestone streets, artistic treasures, and the irresistible flavors of Roman cuisine. Join me as I share our family's immersive experience in this captivating corner of Rome.

This neighborhood, with its narrow, winding streets, promised an authentic Roman experience, far from the bustling tourist crowds near the Colosseum and the Vatican. The February air was crisp, but the sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow on the ancient buildings. It felt like stepping back in time, with the echoes of history resonating through every cobblestone.

Our first stop was the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. As we approached the piazza, the basilica's façade stood majestically, its golden mosaics shimmering in the sunlight.

The basilica, one of the oldest churches in Rome, is believed to be the first official place of Christian worship in the city. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and serenity of the space. The interior, divided into three naves by twenty-two ancient granite columns, exuded a sense of timelessness. Sofia was fascinated by the intricate mosaics, especially those in the apse, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. I found myself captivated by the rich history and artistry that permeated every corner of the basilica. It’s incredible to think that this sacred place has been a center of faith for nearly two millennia.

Rome is not like any other city. It’s a big museum, a living room that anyone can enter.

Leaving the basilica, we wandered deeper into Trastevere's labyrinthine streets. Each alleyway revealed a new surprise – a hidden courtyard, a quaint artisan shop, or a vibrant trattoria. The neighborhood was alive with the sounds of the city – the chatter of locals, the clinking of glasses, and the melodious strains of Italian music. We strolled past ivy-covered buildings, their facades adorned with colorful flower boxes. It was easy to see why Trastevere is often referred to as a 'real Roman neighborhood,' a place where the city's authentic spirit thrives. Despite the February chill, the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

Next on our itinerary was the Villa Farnesina, a hidden gem of the Renaissance.

Tucked away from the main thoroughfares, this exquisite villa offered a glimpse into the opulent world of Agostino Chigi, a wealthy Sienese banker and patron of the arts. As we entered the villa, I was immediately struck by the harmonious blend of architecture and art. The villa, designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi, is adorned with frescoes by some of the greatest masters of the Renaissance, including Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Sodoma. Sofia was particularly captivated by Raphael's frescoes in the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche, a series of enchanting scenes inspired by Apuleius's tale. I was equally mesmerized by Sodoma's depiction of the wedding of Alexander the Great and Roxana, a vibrant and sensual masterpiece. The Villa Farnesina is a testament to the power of art and patronage, a place where beauty and intellect converge.

After immersing ourselves in the artistic wonders of the Villa Farnesina, it was time to indulge in the culinary delights of Trastevere. We made our way to Roma Sparita, a restaurant known for its traditional Roman cuisine.

The restaurant, located in a charming corner of Trastevere, exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere. We started with the carciofo alla giudia, a crispy and flavorful Jewish-style artichoke. For our main courses, Pieter and I opted for the cacio e pepe, a classic Roman pasta dish made with pecorino romano cheese and black pepper. Sofia chose the spaghetti alla carbonara, a creamy and savory delight. Each dish was a testament to the simplicity and quality of Roman cuisine. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect reflection of the city's culinary heritage. As we savored our meal, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the authentic flavors of Rome.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore Trastevere's nightlife scene. We stopped at FRENI E FRIZIONI, a trendy cocktail bar housed in a former mechanic's shop.

The bar, known for its creative cocktails and lively atmosphere, was the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Pieter and I enjoyed expertly mixed drinks while Sofia sipped on a refreshing juice. The bar's outdoor terrace was buzzing with activity, as locals and tourists mingled and chatted. It was a vibrant and energetic scene, a testament to Trastevere's reputation as a hub of Roman nightlife. The bar offers a unique blend of expertly mixed drinks and a lively social scene, making it a must-visit destination in Trastevere.

As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to the hotel, our hearts full of memories from our day in Trastevere. The neighborhood had captivated us with its timeless charm, artistic treasures, and culinary delights. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel – to immerse myself in new cultures, to discover hidden gems, and to create lasting memories with my family.

Tomorrow, our Roman adventure continues with a visit to the Capitoline Museums, the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, and Piazza Venezia. I'm eager to explore these iconic landmarks and delve deeper into the history and culture of this magnificent city. And perhaps, we'll find a cozy spot along Via del Corso for some souvenir shopping before we bid farewell to Rome. However, as the Jubilee celebrations continue, and with the Carnival in full swing, there are many events we can participate in, making our last day in Rome a memorable one.

Before I close, I must share a funny anecdote from our day. As we were leaving the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, Sofia tugged on my sleeve and whispered, Mama, do you think they have Wi-Fi here? I want to post my photos! It seems even in the most ancient of places, the digital age has a way of making its presence known. It was a reminder of how much our world has changed, and yet, how much remains the same. The beauty of Rome, the wonder of art, and the joy of family – these are timeless treasures that transcend generations.

Until tomorrow, arrivederci from Rome!
