Whispers of the Past

Today, Kyoto unfolded like a beautifully preserved scroll, revealing layers of history and culinary artistry. It was a day of exploration that resonated deeply, reminding me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place. The crisp January air, while cold, was invigorating, and the promise of ancient wonders beckoned me forward.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. It was a delightful start, fueling me for the day's adventures. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the food was both comforting and delicious. It's these small, local experiences that truly enrich a journey, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the city.

First on my itinerary was Kiyomizu-dera, a temple that has stood for centuries, witnessing the ebb and flow of time. As I approached, the iconic wooden stage jutting out from the main hall came into view, a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the past. The temple was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall, and its name, Kiyomizu, means Pure Water Temple. The history of Kiyomizu-dera is palpable, with each stone and beam whispering tales of emperors, monks, and pilgrims who have walked these grounds before me. I paused to admire the panoramic view of Kyoto from the stage, the city sprawling beneath a blanket of winter sunshine. It was a moment of profound connection, bridging the gap between past and present.

Exploring the temple grounds, I came across the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. Two stones stand 18 meters apart, and legend has it that if you can walk from one to the other with your eyes closed, you will find true love. While I didn't attempt the feat myself, it was amusing to watch others try, their faces a mix of concentration and hope. The three-storied Koyasu Pagoda stood majestically among the trees, promising safe childbirth to those who visit. The Otowa Waterfall, divided into three streams, offered a taste of longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. Choosing just one stream felt like a gamble, but I opted for longevity, hoping for many more years of travel and discovery.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way it seamlessly blends history with the present, creating a tapestry of experiences that captivate the soul.

Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, I ventured into the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These historic alleyways, with their cobblestone paths and traditional wooden houses, transported me back to the Kyoto of old. Lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, and tea houses, the streets were a sensory delight. I savored the opportunity to wander through these preserved streets, soaking in the atmosphere of a bygone era. The myth that falling on Sannenzaka leads to three years of bad luck (or death!) added a playful edge to my steps; I made sure to watch my footing!

I couldn't resist stopping at Noren by Corazon, a boutique gift shop that offered a refreshing take on traditional souvenirs. Designed by Keisuke Unosawa, the products at Noren are real works of art, and surprisingly affordable. It was the perfect place to find a unique memento of my time in Kyoto. I picked up a beautiful hand-crafted item, a small token to remind me of this enchanting city.

For lunch, I had the pleasure of dining at Hafuu. The restaurant is known for its carefully selected meat dishes and attentive service. The calm and modern Japanese interior created a warm and inviting atmosphere. I opted for their specialty beef cutlet sandwich, and it was simply divine. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the sandwich was perfectly balanced. It was a culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

As evening approached, I made my way to Yasakadori Enraku for dinner. This traditional Japanese restaurant, located behind Kenninji Temple, offered a serene and intimate setting. The private rooms exuded a sense of calm, and the delicate dashi flavors of the dishes were exquisite. The restaurant is known for offering a tourist-oriented program where anyone can watch maiko dances and experience their traditional entertainment. Although there wasn't a Maiko performance on the evening I visited, the food and atmosphere more than made up for it. The oden, a traditional Japanese hotpot dish, was a highlight, with a light yet deeply infused broth. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Kyoto had already captivated me. The blend of history, culture, and cuisine was intoxicating, and I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience it all. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Arashiyama, I am filled with anticipation. The itinerary includes visits to the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the historic Tenryu-ji Temple. I'm particularly excited about the bamboo forest, as I've heard it's a truly magical place. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya for lunch and Gion Mikaku for dinner.

Back at The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Kyoto, I journaled about my experiences, etching the memories into the pages of my travel diary. Pieter and Sofia would have loved walking the streets of Kyoto. I am so grateful that they understand my need to recharge and explore on my own. As I drifted off to sleep, I carried with me the echoes of ancient temples, the flavors of exquisite cuisine, and the warmth of Kyoto's timeless charm. It was a day that nourished my soul and deepened my appreciation for the beauty of solo travel. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow!
