A Day of Cultural Immersion in Kyoto

Today in Kyoto was a symphony of cultural experiences, blending the grandeur of shrines with the tranquility of gardens and the inspiration of art. It was a day that resonated deeply with my soul, reminding me why I embark on these solo journeys in the first place – to connect with history, art, and the quiet beauty that exists in the world.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. I know, pizza in Japan sounds a bit strange, but sometimes you just crave a little taste of home, even when you are far away. I must say, it was delicious! The pizza was prepared in a stone oven, and the crust had the perfect chewy texture. It gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead.

Heian Shrine: A Morning of Grandeur

My first stop was the magnificent Heian Shrine. As I approached, the vibrant vermilion colors of the Otenmon Gate immediately captured my attention. The shrine was established in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. It is dedicated to Emperor Kanmu, who moved the capital to Kyoto in 794, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to reign in Kyoto before the capital moved to Tokyo.

Walking through the expansive courtyard, I was struck by the scale of the buildings, each a replica of structures from the Heian period. The architecture was stunning, and the vast open space gave me a sense of peace and tranquility. I learned that Heian Shrine is a popular place to visit during New Year's, attracting many people who come to pray for good luck and prosperity. I took a moment to reflect on the past and offer my own wishes for the year ahead.

Adding to the magic, I discovered that Heian Shrine is hosting the NAKED Garden of Light event this winter, a blend of traditional Kyoto craftsmanship and modern digital art. Although the event is in the evening, knowing that the shrine transforms into a luminous spectacle after dark made my visit even more special. I imagined the gardens lit up with Kyoto lanterns and projection mapping, a unique fusion of history and technology.

Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art: An Artistic Journey

Next, I headed to the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. I was particularly excited to see the NINAGAWA Mika with EiM: Lights of the beyond, Shadows of this world exhibition. Mika Ninagawa is a renowned photographer and film director known for her vibrant, hyperrealistic style. This exhibition, her largest in the Kansai region, promised to be a visual feast.

As I entered the museum, I was immediately immersed in Ninagawa's world of color and light. The exhibition featured a series of installations that blended video, photography, and three-dimensional displays. Each piece was a sensory experience, inviting me to explore themes of life, death, and the ephemeral beauty of the world. The installations drew inspiration from Kyoto itself, creating a unique dialogue between the city's rich history and Ninagawa's contemporary vision.

I was particularly struck by Whispers of Light, Dreams of Color, an installation featuring 1,500 strands of shimmering crystals adorned with photographs of butterflies and eye-shaped pendants. Walking through this dreamlike realm, I felt a sense of wonder and introspection, as if I were wandering through a sunshower frozen in time. It was a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.

Murinan Garden: A Serene Escape

In the afternoon, I sought refuge in the tranquil Murinan Garden. Tucked away in the Okazaki area, this garden is a hidden gem, a world away from the bustling city streets. Murinan was built in the late 19th century by Yamagata Aritomo, a prominent statesman during the Meiji era. He envisioned it as a place for quiet reflection and strategic planning.

As I strolled through the garden, I was captivated by its serene beauty. The garden was designed by Ogawa Jihei, a master gardener who skillfully incorporated elements of both Japanese and Western garden design. A gentle stream meandered through the landscape, fed by the waters of Lake Biwa, creating a soothing melody that filled the air. The perfectly manicured moss and trees, the carefully placed stones, and the distant views of the Higashiyama Hills all contributed to a sense of harmony and balance.

I paused at the Western-style red brick house, which now serves as a museum. It was here that Yamagata Aritomo met with his ministers to discuss important matters of state, including the Russo-Japanese War. Standing in this historic space, I felt a connection to the past, a sense of the weight of history and the importance of leadership.

Before leaving, I took a moment to sit in the tea house, overlooking the gardens. Sipping on a cup of matcha tea, I reflected on the day's experiences. The Heian Shrine, with its grand architecture and vibrant colors, the KYOCERA Museum of Art, with its thought-provoking exhibitions, and Murinan Garden, with its serene beauty, had all left a lasting impression on me.

Evening Reflections and Culinary Delights

For lunch, I decided to try Kakyo, a restaurant that blends Japanese cuisine with a French touch. The chef, Tomohito Chujo, is known for using seasonal ingredients to create innovative and visually stunning dishes. I opted for the Omakase course, trusting the chef to guide me through a culinary journey that celebrated the flavors of Kyoto in winter. It was an exquisite experience, each dish a work of art that delighted both the palate and the eye.

As evening approached, I ventured out to The Common One Bar Kyoto, a hidden gem known for its modern take on traditional Kyoto aesthetics. The bar features tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a unique space where tradition and modernity intertwine. I enjoyed a meticulously crafted cocktail, savoring the flavors and the ambiance of this unique establishment. The bartenders were true artists, paying attention to every detail, from the shape of the ice cube to the selection of glassware.

Finally, for dinner, I indulged in a teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki Minami. The skilled chef prepared a delicious meal right before my eyes, showcasing the artistry and precision of teppanyaki cooking. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural exploration and artistic discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Gion, visit the Shirakawa Canal, and pay my respects at Yasaka Shrine. I am excited to discover more of Kyoto's hidden gems and immerse myself further in its rich cultural heritage. I am also planning to do some shopping at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. It is going to be another exciting day!

As I walked back to The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Kyoto, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Kyoto had once again revealed its magic, offering a blend of history, art, and natural beauty that nourished my soul. I am so glad that I decided to come here for my solo trip!
