Echoes of Emperors: A Day of Imperial Grandeur in Kyoto
Today was a journey through time, a deep dive into the heart of Japan's imperial history. From the imposing architecture of Nijo Castle to the serene gardens of the Imperial Palace, and finally, the calming expanse of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, I felt like I was walking in the footsteps of emperors and shoguns. It was a day of contrasts, from the power and authority of the shogunate to the delicate beauty of plum blossoms in winter.
My day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. I'd heard whispers about their 'heavenly' vegan pancakes, and they lived up to the hype! Fluffy, light, and topped with soy ice cream and whipped cream, it was the perfect start to a day of exploring. I even made a mental note to try and recreate them for Sofia back home in Amsterdam – she'd absolutely adore them! Fuelled and ready, I set off to Nijo Castle.
Nijo Castle was truly impressive. Built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, it served as both a defense for the Kyoto Imperial Palace and as his residence during visits to the city. The sheer scale of the place is remarkable, and I could almost feel the power emanating from its walls. The intricate details of the Ninomaru Palace, with its 'nightingale floors' designed to chirp underfoot to warn of intruders, were fascinating. I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the various rooms, imagining the shoguns holding court and plotting their strategies. I learned that Nijo Castle is known for hosting nighttime events with projection mapping displays, but unfortunately I was visiting during the day. As I walked through the gardens, the first plum blossoms were just starting to emerge, a delicate splash of color against the winter landscape.

The weight of history settles upon you in Kyoto, a city where the past is not just remembered, but lived.
Next on my itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. After the opulence of Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace exuded a different kind of grandeur – one of refined elegance and serene authority. Used as the Emperor's residence from 1331 until 1868, when the capital moved to Tokyo, the palace has been rebuilt several times after fires. The current structures, dating back to 1855, showcase the architectural styles of the Heian period. The Shishinden Hall, where enthronement ceremonies were once held, was particularly striking. I also enjoyed strolling through the palace gardens, the Oike-niwa Pond Garden and the Inner Garden, admiring the meticulously manicured landscapes and the ancient stone lanterns.

Just outside the Imperial Palace lies the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a vast green space that was once home to the residences of court nobles. Today, it's a public park where locals come to stroll, jog, and relax. After the formality of the palace, it was refreshing to wander through the garden, enjoying the open space and the fresh air. Even in January, the garden had a quiet beauty, with its bare trees and expanses of green lawn. I even spotted a few early-blooming plum trees, their delicate blossoms a promise of the spring to come. I took a leisurely walk, enjoying the tranquility of the garden and watching families playing and couples strolling hand-in-hand.

For lunch, I indulged in a culinary experience at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. As a vegetarian, I usually don't frequent steakhouses, but I was curious to see what all the fuss was about Kobe beef. I opted for a vegetarian set menu, which featured a delicious array of seasonal vegetables cooked teppanyaki style. I must admit, even the aroma of the Kobe beef sizzling on the hotplate was tempting! The restaurant itself was elegant, with counter seating facing the teppan hotplate, allowing diners to watch the chefs at work.

As evening approached, I headed to Chihana for dinner. This renowned restaurant, known for its Itamae Kappo cuisine, has been awarded three Michelin stars. Itamae Kappo involves the chef cooking directly for the customers at the counter, using seasonal ingredients and exquisite knife skills. The experience was truly special. Each dish was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Japanese cuisine. The chefs were incredibly attentive, explaining each course and engaging with the diners. It was a meal to remember, a perfect ending to a day of cultural immersion.

To cap off the evening, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at Bar K6. Recommended for its sophisticated atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails, it was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bartender was a true mixologist, creating a bespoke cocktail based on my preferences. Sipping my drink in the dimly lit bar, surrounded by the murmur of conversation, I felt a sense of contentment. It had been a long but rewarding day, filled with history, culture, and culinary delights. As I prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited to explore the Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, and Eikando Temple. I might even do some shopping at the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store.
