A Solo Journey Back to My Roots in Sighisoara
Day 4: Citadels and Charm: Unveiling Transylvania's Medieval Treasures
Explore the ancient citadels of Rupea and Viscri, delving into Romania's rich history and Saxon heritage on an unforgettable journey.
Echoes of the Past
Today, I embarked on a journey through time, exploring the heart of Transylvania and its magnificent medieval citadels. Leaving the familiar embrace of Sighisoara, I ventured into the countryside, eager to uncover the stories etched within the ancient stones of Rupea Citadel and Viscri. As someone deeply connected to this land, each step felt like a homecoming, a chance to relive the history that shaped my own identity.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Concordia. The cafe was already bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. I savored a traditional Romanian pastry and a strong coffee, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. I made sure to charge my camera fully, remembering the portable phone charger I had forgotten to pack – a small oversight that I wouldn't repeat.

The first stop was Rupea Citadel, a formidable fortress perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The drive there was beautiful, with rolling hills and quaint villages dotting the countryside. The citadel itself was a sight to behold, its imposing stone walls and towers evoking a sense of wonder and awe. I could almost hear the echoes of the past whispering through the stones, tales of battles fought and lives lived within those very walls.

Wandering through the narrow, cobblestone streets, I imagined what life must have been like for the people who once called this place home. The houses, a mix of different architectural styles, reflected the various periods of the citadel's history. I climbed to the top of the Clock Tower, where I was rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Transylvanian countryside. The rolling hills and picturesque villages stretched out before me, a scene that seemed frozen in time.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
I spent hours exploring every nook and cranny of the citadel, capturing its beauty with my camera. The warm July sun cast long shadows across the stone walls, creating a dramatic effect that I couldn't resist photographing. I also visited the citadel's museum, located in the former granary, where I learned more about the history of Rupea and its significance in the region.
After Rupea, I continued my journey to Viscri, a charming village known for its UNESCO-listed fortified church. The Evanghelic C.A. Fortified Church of Viscri is a testament to the Saxon heritage of Transylvania, and it was a truly unique and special place. The village itself was a picture of rural tranquility, with colorful houses and cobblestone streets. It felt like stepping back in time, far away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The fortified church was built around 1100 by the Székler population and later taken over by Saxon colonists. Unlike other fortified churches in Transylvania, Viscri's church has a plain, straight ceiling instead of the traditional vaulted ceiling, a unique feature that sets it apart. I climbed the highest tower of the church, where I was treated to a panoramic view of Viscri and its surroundings. From there, I could even see Sighisoara in the distance, a reminder of where my journey had begun.
Inside the church, I admired the classic 19th-century altar, with its centerpiece depicting the blessing of the children by the painter J. Paukratz from Rupea. The church also had a small museum, showcasing artifacts and items from the village's past. It was fascinating to see how the people of Viscri had lived and worked over the centuries.
As I wandered through the village, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility. The air was clean and fresh, and the only sounds were the chirping of birds and the gentle breeze rustling through the trees. I imagined Pieter and Sofia would have loved this place as well. I made a mental note to bring them here on our next family trip.
For lunch, I stopped at Veneția in Sighisoara, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Romanian cuisine. I savored a delicious tripe soup and a perfectly cooked pizza, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and the friendly service. It was the perfect way to refuel after a long day of exploring.

In the evening, I returned to Sighisoara and treated myself to a fine dinner at Michelangelo. The Italian restaurant was a welcome change of pace, and I indulged in a plate of seafood spaghetti and a glass of local wine. The attentive staff and the calm atmosphere made it a truly enjoyable experience.

To cap off the day, I decided to visit Vintage Lounge for a drink. The lounge had a chill vibe and a nice terrace, perfect for relaxing and reflecting on my adventures. I ordered a glass of Romanian beer and watched as the sun set over the medieval town. It was a magical moment, one that I would cherish forever.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my roots and explore the hidden gems of Transylvania. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Saltmine of Praid and Sovata Bear Lakeview Seating, two more unique and fascinating attractions in this region. I am particularly excited about the Saltmine of Praid, as I have heard it is a truly surreal and unforgettable experience. Before that, I'll have breakfast at Joseph Haydn house, a place I've heard serves a great morning meal.
But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventures in the heart of Romania. As someone who was born and raised here, I can say with certainty that Transylvania is a land of endless beauty and wonder, waiting to be discovered.
