A Fond Farewell

As my week-long solo journey in Sighisoara draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. This trip was more than just a vacation; it was a return to my roots, a chance to reconnect with the town where I was born and raised. It was an opportunity to explore the familiar streets with fresh eyes, to capture the essence of Sighisoara through my lens, and to reflect on the passage of time and the enduring charm of this medieval gem.

My last day began, as most others did, with a delightful breakfast at Ferdinand.

The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee were the perfect way to start the day. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of local pastries and a cappuccino, savoring each bite as I planned my final explorations of the town.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us back to where we began.
After breakfast, I set out to visit the Petofi Museum, dedicated to the Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi.

The museum is a little outside of Sighisoara, in Albesti. The museum itself was founded in 1897 by Countess Haller Louise, and it felt like a step back in time. The exhibits showcased documents, manuscripts, and pictures from the poet's life and the revolution of 1848-1849. As someone with a degree in linguistics and a deep appreciation for history, I found the exhibits fascinating. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the rooms, reading the displays, and imagining what life must have been like in Sighisoara during Petőfi's time. The museum also features a model of the battle of Albesti, which was a poignant reminder of the region's tumultuous past. I was particularly moved by the statue of General Bem, a figure synonymous with the fight for liberty.

Next on my list was Găurile Zmeilor, a natural wonder known for its stunning rock formations.

Although slightly outside the city, it was well worth the short journey. The landscape was breathtaking, with towering rock formations carved by centuries of wind and rain. As I hiked through the area, I felt a sense of awe and tranquility, surrounded by the raw beauty of nature. The fresh air and the panoramic views were invigorating, providing a perfect contrast to the historical and cultural experiences of the town itself. I took numerous photos, trying to capture the essence of this unique place, knowing that no image could truly do it justice.

For lunch, I decided to try Mimoza, a restaurant that blends traditional Romanian flavors with international flair.

I had heard great things about their creamy mushroom stroganoff, a vegan option that sounded both comforting and delicious. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I enjoyed the lively atmosphere and the friendly service. The stroganoff was indeed a culinary delight, rich and flavorful, and the perfect midday meal. Mimoza turned out to be a great choice, offering a taste of modern Sighisoara while still honoring its Romanian roots.

After lunch, I made my way to Spoonman's Shop.

I'd read about Mark Tudose, the artist behind it, and his intricately carved wooden spoons. The shop was a treasure trove of artistic wonders, filled with handmade products ranging from wooden spoons to vibrant textiles. Each item told a story, reflecting the skill and creativity of Romanian artisans. I spent a good hour browsing through the shop, admiring the craftsmanship and chatting with the staff, who were eager to share insights into the history and techniques behind each piece. I ended up buying a small, beautifully carved spoon adorned with traditional Romanian motifs as a memento of my trip. I know Sofia, my daughter, will love it, as she is always keen to learn about my Romanian heritage.

As evening approached, I indulged in a final dinner at Quattro Amici.

I was in the mood for Italian, and this restaurant was known for its authentic Italian cuisine. The aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air as I stepped inside. I ordered a simple margherita pizza, eager to savor the flavors of Italy in the heart of Transylvania. The pizza was delicious, with a perfectly crispy crust and a tangy tomato sauce. Quattro Amici provided a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, and it was a fitting end to my culinary explorations of Sighisoara.

Reflecting on my time in Sighisoara, I realize how much this town has shaped me. My childhood memories flood back as I walked the ancient streets. I remember playing in the shadow of the Clock Tower, listening to the stories of Vlad the Impaler, and feeling a sense of belonging that only comes from being in a place where your roots run deep.

This solo trip was an opportunity to revisit those memories, to see how Sighisoara has changed, and to appreciate the enduring beauty of its medieval architecture. I captured countless photos, each one telling a story of history, culture, and personal connection. I savored the local cuisine, from traditional Romanian dishes to international flavors, and I immersed myself in the town's vibrant atmosphere. I also realized how much I miss Pieter and Sofia when I travel alone; I´m already looking forward to telling them all about this trip.

As I prepare to leave Sighisoara tomorrow, I carry with me a renewed sense of appreciation for my heritage and a deeper understanding of who I am. This journey back to my roots has been an enriching and transformative experience, and I know that the memories I've made here will stay with me forever. Sighisoara, you will always hold a special place in my heart.
