A Journey Begins

As I sit here, reflecting on my first day back in Sighisoara, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. This town, my birthplace, holds a special place in my heart, and returning solo feels like a pilgrimage to my roots. The cobblestone streets, the medieval architecture, and the familiar scent of traditional Romanian cuisine in the air—it's all so comforting and invigorating. Today was all about reacquainting myself with the heart of Sighisoara, the citadel, and soaking in the atmosphere I've missed for so long.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Vlad Dracul Restaurant. It felt surreal to be eating in what is believed to be the birthplace of Vlad Țepeș, the infamous inspiration for Dracula. The restaurant was atmospheric, decorated with medieval weapons and family crests, creating a truly immersive experience. I savored a traditional Romanian breakfast, ‘ciorba de burta’ (tripe soup), which was the perfect start to a day of exploring.

The beauty of Sighisoara lies not just in its stones and structures, but in the stories whispered through its ancient streets.

After breakfast, I ventured into the heart of the Sighișoara Citadel. The citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is remarkably well-preserved, and walking through its gates felt like stepping back in time. The colorful buildings, the narrow, winding streets, and the medieval towers all contribute to its unique charm. It's easy to see why Sighisoara is often called the Pearl of Transylvania.

My first stop was, of course, The Clock Tower. This iconic landmark dominates the Sighisoara skyline and serves as the main entry point to the citadel. Climbing the tower was a must, and the panoramic views from the top were breathtaking. The intricate clock mechanism, with its rotating wooden figurines depicting deities, was fascinating to observe. The tower itself has served many purposes throughout history, from protecting the main gate to housing the town hall. Now, it is home to the History Museum of Sighisoara, which I explored, delving into the town's rich past. I learned about the guilds that once thrived here, the battles fought, and the fires that shaped the city's destiny. It's incredible to think that this tower has stood for centuries, witnessing countless events and transformations.

Next, I strolled along the old city walls, imagining what life must have been like when the citadel was a bustling hub of medieval activity. It is amazing that nine of the original fourteen towers have survived to this day! Each tower was maintained by a different guild. I walked past the Tanners' Tower and the Tinsmiths' Tower, picturing the craftsmen hard at work, their skills and trades essential to the town's survival.

From there, I made my way to The Covered Stairway, also known as the Scholars' Stairs. Built in 1642, this unique wooden staircase was originally constructed to provide shelter for schoolchildren on their way to the Church on the Hill during the harsh winter months. Climbing the 175 steps was a bit of a workout, but the sense of history surrounding me made it worthwhile. The stairway led me to the Church on the Hill, a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Though the church was originally Catholic, it became Lutheran after the Reformation. The walls were once adorned with murals, but most were painted over in the 18th century. Still, the church exuded a sense of peace and history. I took a moment to wander through the German cemetery outside the church, reflecting on the lives of those who came before me.

After a morning of sightseeing, I was ready for lunch. I chose Restaurant La Perla, drawn in by its outdoor seating and charming atmosphere. The weather was perfect, and I enjoyed sitting outside, soaking in the sights and sounds of the citadel. I ordered a traditional Romanian dish, ‘tochitura cu mamaliguta’ (a hearty pork stew with polenta), and it was absolutely delicious. The service was quick and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel before continuing my explorations.

In the afternoon, I indulged in a bit of souvenir shopping at Boutique de Souvenirs. I wanted to find something special to remember this trip, and I ended up buying a hand-painted ceramic plate depicting the Clock Tower. It's a beautiful reminder of my time in Sighisoara, and I know it will look lovely in my home in Amsterdam.

As evening approached, I decided to have dinner at Geurgius Krauss Restaurant. This restaurant is located in a historic building from the 16th century and offers a unique dining experience. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the staff was attentive and welcoming. I ordered braised lamb, a local specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. The restaurant also had a selection of Romanian wines, and I enjoyed a glass of red wine with my meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

Before heading back to Hotel Central Park, I took one last stroll through the citadel. The town was quieter now, the crowds had thinned, and the medieval streets were bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. It was magical. I paused for a moment, taking it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to return to my birthplace and reconnect with my roots.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Casa lui Vlad Dracul, Muzeul De Istorie Sighișoara, and Biserica din Deal. I am also hoping to spend some time at Voynich Cafe & Pub. I'm excited to continue my journey and uncover more of Sighisoara's hidden gems. I am especially looking forward to visiting the Sighisoara History Museum and Biserica din Deal (the Church on the Hill) again, as I recall visiting them as a child with my family. It is a place of great beauty and history, and I can't wait to explore it again with fresh eyes.

As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. Sighisoara has a way of captivating the soul, and I'm so glad I decided to come back. This solo journey is proving to be exactly what I needed—a chance to reconnect with my past, embrace the present, and look forward to the future.
