As our final day in San Gimignano draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared as a family in this captivating medieval town. From scaling ancient towers to savoring authentic Tuscan flavors, every moment has been a treasure. Today was no exception, filled with exploration, delicious food, and a final soak in the unique atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our last day began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast at Vinaio di San Gimignano. After the previous days of rich Tuscan dinners, we opted for something lighter. Emily and I shared a schiacciata with porchetta, aubergine, courgettes and rocket, while Oliver devoured a simple ham and cheese sandwich. The warm, crispy bread and fresh ingredients were the perfect start to the day. I grabbed a coffee, and we sat at one of the small tables, enjoying the beautiful view of the square as we planned our final day's adventure.

First on the agenda was a visit to the heart of San Gimignano: Piazza della Cisterna. This triangular square, named after the cistern constructed in 1287, has always been the town's central hub. As we stepped onto the brick-paved square, I couldn't help but imagine the bustling markets, festivals, and tournaments that once took place here. The kids were fascinated by the octagonal well in the center, built in 1346, which once served as the town's main water source.

Our final historical stop was Casa Santa Fina, a place dedicated to the town's beloved Saint Fina. Fina, also known as Seraphina, was born in San Gimignano in 1238 and is honored for her piety and the miracles attributed to her. Although Oliver was more interested in the Gelateria Dondoli, Emily and I appreciated the chance to learn about this local saint and the impact she had on the community. The Casa itself is a beautiful example of medieval architecture, and the frescoes depicting Fina's life are truly captivating.

For lunch, we decided to try Il Pino, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. Tucked away near the Arco di Porta S. Matteo and Piazza di S. Agostino, the restaurant had a rustic charm with exposed brick and medieval arches. We started with bruschetta and crostini toscani, followed by hearty pasta dishes. Emily opted for the wild boar ragu, while I indulged in the pici with cacio e pepe. Oliver, of course, chose the spaghetti al pomodoro. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

As the afternoon wore on, we sought refuge from the sun at Divina Lounge Bar. This trendy spot offered a welcome respite with its cool, modern vibe and refreshing drinks. Emily enjoyed an Aperol spritz, while I opted for a local beer. Oliver, of course, was thrilled with his lemonade. Sipping our drinks, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip: climbing the Torre Grossa, exploring the Duomo, and simply wandering through the charming streets.

For our final dinner in San Gimignano, we chose La Mangiatoia, a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan dishes with a refined touch. Located in a characteristic alleyway, the restaurant had a sophisticated yet welcoming ambiance. We started with the classic Tuscan antipasto, featuring cured meats, cheeses, and crostini. For our main courses, Emily chose the truffle carbonara, while I opted for the osso buco. Oliver, feeling adventurous, tried the ravioli with butter and sage. Every dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the best of Tuscan cuisine.
