Sunday in San Gimignano: Walls, Views, and Art

Today was a day of wandering, of soaking in the atmosphere of San Gimignano. It’s amazing how much history you can absorb just by walking around, and that’s exactly what we did. The family was up for a relatively relaxed day, which was welcome after yesterday’s adventures. No Arsenal today, just pure Tuscan charm.

We started our day with breakfast at Giardino Bistrot. Emily had been eager to try it, having read some great reviews, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The pastries were delightful, and the coffee was strong – just what I needed to kickstart a day of exploring. Oliver, of course, opted for a pain au chocolat, his go-to breakfast treat. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the town's ancient walls.

Sometimes, the best discoveries are made when you simply allow yourself to wander.

Walking the Walls of Time

The Mura della città offered a fantastic way to get acquainted with San Gimignano. Walking along these ancient walls, you can almost feel the history seeping through the stones. It's incredible to think about all the people who have walked the same path over the centuries. Oliver, naturally, was fascinated by the ramparts and battlements, imagining knights defending the city from invaders. I tried to explain the historical context, but his imagination was far more vivid than any history lesson I could provide.

As we strolled, I couldn't help but think of my grandfather. He would have loved this place. He was always so passionate about history, especially anything to do with medieval Britain. I could almost hear him telling me stories of sieges and battles, his eyes gleaming with excitement. I made a mental note to look up some more details about the history of San Gimignano's walls later; I know he would have appreciated that.

A View from the Top

Next on our list was the Viewpoint San Gimignano. It wasn’t hard to find; San Gimignano isn't exactly sprawling. The view from the top was breathtaking, a classic Tuscan panorama of rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see. Even Emily, who's seen her fair share of beautiful landscapes in her work as a marine biologist, was impressed. Oliver, of course, was more interested in spotting animals in the distance, but he did take a moment to appreciate the sheer scale of the view.

Standing there, gazing out over the landscape, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a moment to just breathe and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. It's these moments, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, that I truly cherish.

Contemporary Art in a Medieval Setting

After soaking in the views, we decided to visit Galleria Continua. This contemporary art gallery is housed in a former cinema, which creates a fascinating juxtaposition of modern art within a historic setting. I wasn't sure how Oliver would react, but he was surprisingly engaged. Some of the pieces were a bit abstract for his taste, but he enjoyed the sheer creativity and imagination on display.

Emily and I appreciated the thought-provoking nature of the art. It's always interesting to see how artists interpret the world around them, and Galleria Continua certainly offers a diverse range of perspectives. I particularly enjoyed the works by Ai Weiwei, whose pieces often explore themes of social justice and human rights. It's inspiring to see art that challenges the status quo and encourages dialogue.

The gallery itself is an experience. It’s set in an old theatre, and the layout is really interesting. You can see how the space has been adapted to showcase the art, and it adds another layer to the overall experience. It's a great example of how old and new can come together to create something unique and compelling.

Wine and Dine

By this point, we were all feeling a bit peckish, so we headed to Osteria Enoteca I Quattro Gatti for lunch. This place came highly recommended, and it lived up to the hype. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a selection of Tuscan specialties, including pasta with wild boar ragu and some delicious bruschetta. Oliver, of course, stuck to his usual Margherita pizza, but even he admitted that the other dishes looked tempting.

The food was fantastic, but what really stood out was the wine. The Osteria has an extensive wine list, showcasing the best of Tuscan viticulture. I opted for a glass of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the local white wine, and it was superb – crisp, refreshing, and with a hint of minerality. It was the perfect accompaniment to our meal. Emily, being the more knowledgeable one when it comes to wine, explained some of the nuances of the Vernaccia grape and the region's winemaking traditions. I always learn something new when she's around.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a bit of relaxation. We stopped by Gustavo Mescita Vini Enoteca for a pre-dinner drink. This charming wine bar has a great selection of local wines, and the atmosphere was perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. I sampled a few different varieties, chatting with the owner about the region's winemaking heritage. It's always fascinating to learn about the local culture through its wines.

Oliver, of course, wasn't interested in wine, but they had a selection of juices and soft drinks to keep him happy. He spent his time drawing in his notebook, occasionally glancing up to admire the surroundings. It's nice to see him developing an appreciation for different places, even if his interests are a bit different from ours.

A Tuscan Evening

For dinner, we had booked a table at La Mandragola , a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine and stunning views. We arrived just as the sun was beginning to set, and the view from our table was simply magical. The sky was ablaze with color, casting a warm glow over the rolling hills. It was the perfect setting for a memorable meal.

The food was excellent, hearty and flavorful. We started with some local cheeses and cured meats, followed by pasta dishes and grilled meats. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the ingredients were clearly fresh and locally sourced. Even Oliver, who can be a bit picky, enjoyed his meal. He particularly liked the panna cotta for dessert, which he devoured in record time.

As we finished our meal, I raised a glass of wine in a toast to my family. It's moments like these, sharing good food and wine in a beautiful setting, that make all the travel worthwhile. I feel so grateful to be able to experience these things with the people I love most.

Tomorrow, we're planning to delve deeper into San Gimignano's history with a visit to the Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, and Torre Grossa. We'll also explore the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino and the Bagolaro di San Gimignano. It promises to be another day filled with culture, history, and adventure. I’m also hoping to find some time to visit Le Torri s.r.l, a shop that Emily spotted and wants to check out. Until then, I'll savor the memories of today's Sunday stroll through San Gimignano's timeless beauty.

It was also hard not to notice the buzz around town regarding the Rebel Queen 2025, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Fest. It certainly added to the lively atmosphere of the town today!
Even though I am a die hard Arsenal fan, I do find myself enjoying the local culture and events!
