Whispers of the Past: A Day in Shirakawa-go and Suganuma

Today’s adventure transported me from the bustling city of Kanazawa to the serene landscapes of rural Japan. It was a day filled with history, culture, and breathtaking scenery, a true immersion into the heart of old Japan. Leaving the modern comforts of the Henn na Hotel Kanazawa Korinbo behind, I set out to explore villages where time seems to stand still, and the spirit of traditional Japan thrives.

The day began early with a hearty breakfast at Gyokusen-tei, a culinary gem known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. The restaurant's dedication to seasonal ingredients made for a delightful start to the day. I savored each bite, knowing that the day ahead would be filled with exploration and discovery. Fuelled up, I embarked on a journey to Shirakawa-go, a village famed for its gassho-style farmhouses. The crisp November air hinted at the approaching winter, and I was grateful for my warm jacket and scarf.

As the bus wound its way through the mountains, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of autumn colors. Although the vibrant foliage was starting to fade, the scenery was still captivating. Arriving in Shirakawa-go, I was immediately struck by the unique architecture of the gassho-style houses. Their steeply pitched thatched roofs, resembling hands clasped in prayer, were designed to withstand the region's heavy snowfall. I wandered through the village, admiring the well-preserved farmhouses and the tranquil atmosphere. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the modern hustle and bustle of city life.

I explored the village, popping into a few of the open houses. Many have been converted into museums, showcasing the traditional way of life in these communities. Tools for farming, raising silkworms, and crafting washi paper were on display, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the villagers. It struck me how these houses were more than just dwellings; they were a testament to the deep connection between the people and their environment.

Lunch was at Tawara Restaurant, where I indulged in innovative French dishes crafted with local ingredients. The chef's dedication to cooking was evident. The fusion of French techniques with Japanese flavors was a delightful surprise, a testament to Kanazawa's culinary scene.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

After Shirakawa-go, I ventured to the World Heritage Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village, a smaller and more secluded settlement. This village exuded a sense of tranquility, with its nine gassho-style houses nestled along the Shogawa River. The absence of crowds allowed for a more intimate experience, a chance to connect with the surroundings on a deeper level. The village was quiet and calm, making it easy to imagine what life must have been like for the families who lived there generations ago.

Suganuma Village has a rich history. The gassho-style houses were built between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing the architectural ingenuity of the time. The surrounding landscape, including the snow-holding forest on the mountainside, added to the village's charm and provided a glimpse into the harmonious relationship between the people and their environment. The steep roofs protect the homes from the heavy snow.

The Suganuma Gassho no Sato is connected to Suganuma Village by a tunnel. It features traditional farmhouses relocated from the surrounding region, preserving them for future generations. While exploring the village, I visited the Ensho no Yakata, a museum dedicated to the history of saltpeter production in the region. Saltpeter, an ingredient in gunpowder, was an important industry in Gokayama during the Edo Period, and the museum provided fascinating insights into this aspect of the region's past.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Kanazawa, reflecting on the beauty and simplicity of the gassho-style villages. These communities, with their unique architecture and rich cultural heritage, offered a glimpse into a bygone era, a reminder of the importance of preserving our traditions and connecting with our roots.

Back in Kanazawa, I decided to end the day with a visit to The Londonya Bar, a local establishment with a unique atmosphere. The bar has been around for over 50 years, and the owner's whisky collection is mind-blowing. He’s been collecting bottles for many years, with some dating back to the 1860s! It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Sipping on a dram of whisky, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Shirakawa-go and Suganuma, two of Japan's hidden gems.

Before heading back to the hotel, I grabbed dinner at Grill Otsuka, a famous western restaurant known for its Hanton Rice and Hamburger Steak. I opted for the Hanton Rice, a local specialty featuring ketchup rice wrapped in a semi-soft omelette, topped with deep-fried breaded tuna and shrimp. It was a unique and satisfying dish, a fitting end to a day of cultural exploration and culinary delights.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore more of Kanazawa itself. The Kanazawa Literary Hall and the Nishi Chaya District are on the agenda, and I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the city's cultural tapestry. I might even do some shopping at Kanazawa Hakomachi. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this fascinating corner of Japan.

Until tomorrow, then, from Kanazawa!
