Day 2: Awe-Inspiring Cathedral Gorge and Panoramic Views at Piccaninny Creek
Discover the majestic Cathedral Gorge and breathtaking views of Piccaninny Creek in the Bungle Bungle Range. An unforgettable day!
Whispers of Ancient Wonders
Today was nothing short of spectacular! The Bungle Bungle Range has truly exceeded all expectations. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Heidelberg feels like a distant memory as I immerse myself in the raw, untamed beauty of Australia. With my friends by my side, every moment feels like a shared adventure, etching memories into our minds that we'll cherish for a lifetime.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. The staff were incredibly accommodating, ensuring we had everything we needed to fuel up for our adventures. I even managed to snag an extra helping of their delicious Barramundi, a local favorite. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore the wonders that awaited us.
The first stop on our itinerary was the magnificent Cathedral Gorge. The drive there was an adventure in itself, navigating the rugged terrain in our trusty 4x4. The landscape is harsh but beautiful, a constant reminder of nature's power and resilience. The red earth, dotted with spinifex grass, stretches out as far as the eye can see, creating a surreal and captivating panorama.
As we approached Cathedral Gorge, the temperature began to rise, a reminder of the Kimberley's intense summer heat. I was grateful for the sunscreen and wide-brimmed hat I'd packed, although I did forget the insect repellent back at home. Note to self: always double-check the essentials list!
The walk to Cathedral Gorge was relatively easy, a gentle stroll along a well-trodden path. The anticipation grew with each step as the towering walls of the gorge came into view. And then, there it was – a colossal natural amphitheater carved out of the rock over millions of years. The sheer scale of Cathedral Gorge is simply breathtaking. The acoustics within the gorge were incredible. I couldn't resist testing them out, humming a few lines from a Bollywood classic. The echoes that bounced back were magical, amplifying the sound and filling the space with a sense of wonder.
To stand within Cathedral Gorge is to stand within the heart of time itself, feeling the echoes of ages past resonate within the very stone.
We spent a good hour exploring every nook and cranny, taking photos, and simply soaking in the atmosphere. The light filtering through the opening at the top of the gorge created an ethereal glow, illuminating the red rock walls and highlighting the intricate patterns etched into the stone. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience, one that I will never forget.

After our visit to Cathedral Gorge, we drove to Piccaninny Creek Lookout. The drive was a bit bumpy, but the scenery more than made up for it. As we ascended to the lookout point, the landscape opened up before us, revealing a panoramic vista of the Bungle Bungle Range. The iconic beehive-shaped domes stretched out as far as the eye could see, their orange and black stripes shimmering in the afternoon sun.

I felt a sense of accomplishment, having witnessed such incredible natural beauty. I shared a moment of quiet reflection with Thomas in my thoughts, wishing he and Leela could experience this with me. I know they would have loved it just as much as I did.
At the lookout, we met a fellow traveler, an older gentleman from Sydney who had been visiting the Bungle Bungles for over 20 years. He shared stories of his adventures in the Kimberley, regaling us with tales of daring hikes, close encounters with wildlife, and unforgettable sunsets. His passion for the region was infectious, and it reinforced my own desire to explore more of this incredible country.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. The lodge was a welcome oasis of comfort, a place to relax and rejuvenate after a day of exploring. We enjoyed some drinks at the bar, recounting our adventures and sharing stories with other travelers. The sense of camaraderie was palpable, a shared connection forged by our mutual appreciation for the Bungle Bungle Range.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how fortunate I am to be able to experience such incredible places. The Bungle Bungle Range is a true natural wonder, a place that inspires awe, wonder, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of our planet.
Before dinner at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, we took a moment to simply sit and observe the landscape. The sun cast long shadows across the domes, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a perfect day. The communal dining experience was a delight. The buffet offered a variety of dishes, including locally sourced beef and saltwater barramundi.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post under the vast Kimberley sky, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. The Bungle Bungle Range has touched my soul, leaving an indelible mark on my heart. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include exploring Echidna Chasm and Mini Palms Gorge. I've heard that Echidna Chasm is particularly stunning around midday when the sun illuminates the walls of the gorge. And I'm excited to see the unique desert landscape of Mini Palms Gorge.
But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration in this incredible corner of the world.
I'm also planning to visit the shop at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge tomorrow to replace the insect repellent I forgot. And perhaps I'll pick up a souvenir or two for Thomas and Leela, a small reminder of the incredible adventures I'm having here in the Bungle Bungle Range.
Goodnight from the Kimberley!
