The Kimberley Beckons!

After what felt like an eternity in the air, I've finally arrived in Kununurra, the gateway to the Bungle Bungle Range! The journey from Heidelberg was long, but the excitement of exploring this remote and ancient landscape with my friends has kept me energized. I'm ready to trade the winter chill of Germany for the warmth of the Australian Outback and embark on this incredible adventure.

The flight into Kununurra was smooth, and as we descended, I caught my first glimpse of the Kimberley region. The vast expanse of red earth, dotted with spinifex and rugged ranges, was a stark contrast to the lush green forests I'm used to seeing back home. Even from the air, I could feel the ancient spirit of this land calling to me. It's a landscape that whispers stories of Dreamtime and resilience, and I'm eager to listen.

Stepping off the plane, the heat hit me like a wall. December in the Kimberley is definitely hot! But I welcomed it – a welcome change from the frosty mornings in Heidelberg. My friends were already waiting, their faces beaming with excitement. After a round of hugs and excited chatter, we collected our rental vehicles – sturdy 4x4s that will be our trusty steeds for the next few days. Our first stop was the Kununurra Visitor Centre.

The Kununurra Visitor Centre proved to be an invaluable resource. We picked up maps, brochures, and the latest updates on park conditions. The staff were incredibly helpful, answering our questions about the Bungle Bungle Range and providing tips for navigating the park. I even managed to grab a small souvenir – a beautiful hand-painted didgeridoo – a reminder of the indigenous culture that permeates this land. It is amazing that the Kununurra Visitor Centre also keeps everyone up to date on local Kununurra events such as the Kununurra Christmas Markets.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

After stocking up on supplies at a local shop, we headed to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, where we enjoyed a hearty breakfast. I opted for a classic Aussie breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast, while my friends tried the local fruit and yogurt. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day ahead. While there I did some needed shopping at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company shop.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the landscape, we arrived at Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, our home for the next few nights. This eco-friendly accommodation is nestled in the heart of Purnululu National Park, offering comfortable cabins and stunning views of the surrounding ranges. After settling into our cabins, we gathered for dinner at the lodge's restaurant. The meal was a delicious buffet of locally sourced ingredients, and we enjoyed swapping stories with fellow travelers from around the world.

The Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge is the only accommodation with a pool inside Purnululu National Park. Each private cabin is thoughtfully designed with timber floors, louvre windows for natural airflow, hotel-quality beds, ensuite bathrooms, and a front deck to soak up the tranquility of the surrounds.

As I sit here now, under a canopy of stars so bright they seem close enough to touch, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place, for the friendship and laughter that fills the air, and for the reminder that adventure is always waiting, just around the corner. Tomorrow, we will be exploring Cathedral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek Lookout. I think I will enjoy breakfast here tomorrow as well. I'm especially keen to see Cathedral Gorge. I've heard it's an awe-inspiring natural amphitheater.

But for now, I'm content to soak up the stillness of the night, listening to the sounds of the bush and dreaming of the adventures to come. The Bungle Bungle Range, here I am!
