Adventurous Journey to the Bungle Bungle Range
Day 18: Farewell to the Bungle Bungles: Reflecting on an Outback Adventure
Saying goodbye to the Bungle Bungles with unforgettable memories of ancient landscapes, starlit dinners, and Kimberley sunsets.
Homeward Bound, But Forever Changed
As the sun sets on my final day in the Bungle Bungle Range, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. This trip with my friends has been nothing short of extraordinary, a true immersion into the raw beauty and ancient spirit of the Australian Outback. While I'm eager to return home to Thomas and Leela in Heidelberg, a piece of my heart will forever remain among these majestic domes.
My last day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. Fuelled up for the day, we decided to join one of the Bungle Bungle Guided Tours. Opting for a walking tour seemed the perfect way to say goodbye, allowing us to soak in every last detail of this unique landscape. The tour guide shared fascinating insights into the geology, Aboriginal history, and the unique flora and fauna of the region. Walking amongst the iconic beehive domes, I felt a profound sense of connection to this ancient land.

The Kimberley sun was already beating down as we set off, a reminder of the extreme temperatures that this region experiences. December in the Bungle Bungle Range means embracing the heat, but the beauty surrounding us made it all worthwhile. I was grateful for the sunscreen I packed, though I did regret forgetting the insect repellent [cite].
Our guided walk led us to Cathedral Gorge, a natural amphitheater with towering red rock walls. The acoustics inside were incredible, and I couldn't resist humming a few lines from a Bollywood classic, much to the amusement of my friends. The sheer scale of the gorge was awe-inspiring, a testament to the power of nature over millions of years.
To travel is to take a journey into yourself.
After our morning adventure, we headed to Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge for lunch. The lodge provided a welcome respite from the heat, and we enjoyed a delicious meal in a relaxed setting. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the food was wonderful. I savored a fresh salad and some grilled barramundi, a true taste of the Australian Outback.

As the afternoon approached, we decided to spend our last few hours at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. We relaxed by the bar, sipping on refreshing drinks and sharing stories from our adventure. The lodge had a charming, rustic atmosphere, and it was easy to see why so many travelers loved staying there.

The Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge also had a bar, and we decided to have a refreshing drink there. Sipping on a gin and tonic, I reflected on the incredible experiences of the past 18 days. From the moment we arrived in Kununurra, to our hikes through the gorges and our nights under the stars, this trip had been a dream come true. I thought of Thomas and Leela, and how much I missed them, but I also knew that this journey had enriched my life in countless ways.
Dinner was back at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. The food was delicious, and the company was even better. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and the stunning view of the Bungle Bungle Range. As darkness fell, the stars began to emerge, blanketing the sky in a dazzling display of celestial beauty. Living in Heidelberg, you forget how many stars there are up there, without the light pollution of the city. The Milky Way stretched across the horizon, a reminder of the vastness of the universe and our place within it.
The Bungle Bungle Range is known for its stunning sunrises and sunsets, but the night sky is equally captivating. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me as I gazed at the stars, a feeling I knew I would carry with me long after I left this place.
As I prepare to leave the Bungle Bungle Range, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. I will cherish the memories of hiking through the gorges, marveling at the beehive domes, and sharing laughter with my friends under the Kimberley stars. This trip has reminded me of the importance of adventure, the beauty of nature, and the power of friendship. I can’t wait to share my stories with Thomas and Leela and start planning our next adventure together.
While this chapter of my Australian adventure comes to a close, I know that there are many more stories waiting to be written.
